Organizational change in public relations is universal as organizations try to adapt to a changing society and push for competitive advantage. In order for this to be successful, and organization is required to have strong leadership in place for unpredictable outcomes. Leadership in public relations can strengthen the profession and contribute to organizational effectiveness. The primary question is “What does leadership in public relations really means and what qualities does that leader need to have to be successful?” For that reason, I have watched four video interviews with distinguished public relations leaders. According to her, it means that you are providing the team that you are working for with support and giving them all the guidance that they need to be successful. A person should have a vision for where the company is going to go and how they are going to get there. Alicia mentioned a couple of key qualities that would make great leaders. First, you have to have integrity in order to be known as honest in this industry. Second, you should have constant curiosity with a willingness to learn and challenge yourselves. Third, you have to be committed to excellence in order to deliver a brilliant work product for a client. Finally, you have to have the courage to do the right thing. My initial reaction to this interview is that integrity may be the most important aspect, because if you say you are going to do something, you have to follow through with it. Nilanjana R. Bardhan, a professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Communication Studies, explains how multi-dimensional public relations leadership is. There are leadership skills in public relations that you could apply across several different industries. One skill is to be the kind of person that is an excellent communicator and is able to inspire and motivate the groups of people in the organization. I think that this is a significant prospect to accomplish goals and objectives that have already been set for that organization. Dr. Bardhan also mentioned four qualities that are necessary to succeed in public relations. One of them is to be a really good student of human nature. I think this is important because we have to work with different types of people from various backgrounds and we have to build relationships and connections with those people. Second, we have to stay calm and composed in the times of crisis. I think this is important because in order to come up with great solutions, that would be a powerful ability to have. Third, a leader has to be a lifelong learner. In my opinion, this is necessary for us to keep growing and not think that we already know everything there is about being a great leader. We are currently in an era where the profession of public relations is widely viewed as being “spin doctors” and hype can often eclipse reality. Most individuals see public relations as people who manipulate the public mind, rather than tell the truth. We are often accused of distorting reality, propaganda and withholding information. With these circumstances, you could have thought that “ethical public relations” was an oxymoron. Although not everyone is in tune with today’s public relation’s world, it is critical to assert a practitioners' beliefs of ethics in the practice of public relations. Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Perhaps the most important qualities of a leader are passion and motivation. Especially when leading a group for a particular cause, a leader must be personally attached to that cause. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for example, is a legendary leader because he fought for a cause that directly affected him. had he not been pushing for a personal reason, his actions would not have been as passionate. This would have caused a lack in motivation, another essential leadership quality. A leader faces many roadblocks and opposition and thus, must be motivated to continue fighting and leading. A leader’s attitude and opinions are valued by the group and therefore, if a leader is motivated, the group will be, too. The continued actions and successes, no matter how small, which move the group closer to its goal also help its motivation and drive.
In order to be a good leader, one must have self-confidence, communication skills, charisma and integrity. These are the fundamental skills that make a good leader. Self-confidence is the attitude that one possesses in which one is not afraid to make decisions based on their ideas. Communication skills allow a leader to convey his or her ideas or thoughts carefully. Charisma is what makes a leader appealing to the public, and integrity is what allows the public to trust and have faith in the leader. Without these skills, a leader would just be mediocre, and not great.
Today, public relations is a complex profession by thousands of thousands of people all the world to practice.
