According to Lake Superior State University, approximately 65 percent of all people are visual learners. Despite research showing an overwhelming majority of visual learners, many classes are designed to better suit auditory learners with visual aids. How then are the five percent of people, who are dominantly kinesthetic learners, supposed to learn effectively in this kind of environment? It is important for students and instructors alike to know about learning styles, the research into the field, and why classes should be taught for all types of learners. How do people learn? Most classes such as math and the sciences are taught deductively. This means the instructor of the class introduces the students to a new concept, such as multiplication or division in an elementary classroom, and then requires his/her students to use the new knowledge. The other style, inductively, is just the reverse. Inductive learning is done by first being thrown “into the gauntlet” so to speak. The students are given something to interpret such as a real world problem or data set and told to find the solution. After some time is given to allow the students to search for a solution, hints or the solution are given along with an explanation of how to derive the answer. The theory behind inductive learning is, “As the students attempt to analyze the data or scenario or solve the problem, they generate a need for facts, rules, procedures, and guiding principles, at which point they are either presented with the needed information or helped to discover it for themselves” (Michael, 1). To support these principles as to how people learn, there have been many studies and surveys developed that provide more information to students and teachers alike. For example, according to the University of Illinois Extension, “Only 10 percent of secondary students learn best auditorily, but 80 percent of instructional delivery is auditory.” Along with the statistical information of the group research, there …show more content…
The test consists of 44 different questions with two available answers. Instead of focusing on just the four perceptual learning styles, this test also attempts to measure whether or not an individual is a sequential or global learner to give results that are even more specific. The overall results are broken down into active/reflective, sensual/intuitive, visual/verbal, and sequential/global (Soloman). Fundamentally, development of the brain is an immense determinant of someone’s ability to learn. Therefore, the success of most learning patterns will be premised upon this notion of brain development. Other aspects of learning involves practice, teaching methods applied, the complexity of the concepts being taught and so forth. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these other methods is dependent upon the brain of the learner. People have different levels of brain development. This manifests itself in the different abilities of learning. Some are poor learners whereas others learn pretty fast (Iba & Miyake, 2010).

When entering college freshman students face difficulties by not knowing how to adjust to the new expectations college brings. A freshman student tends to approach college with the same mentality used throughout their high school years. But as the first semester start, they encounter a variety of challenges, including having to change their study habits and knowing how to wisely manage their time. The book “The Elements of Learning” by B. Banner, Jr., and C. Cannon, introduces the elements a student must possess in order be successful in college. The research made by my team, “Collin’s Angels”, will determine important factors for freshman success, and the changes that a student makes in order to succeed through the first year of college.
Thus, there will be a potential learning curve in this regard as the group learns the content, but also how to navigate the learning platform where they will engage in discussions, shared learning through group sharing of information, and opportunities to participate in a comparative analysis of interpreting work. Furthermore, since the instructional designer and instructor is not familiar with the learning group, it is important to engage the group in participating in a learning assessment such as VARK – Visual, Aural, Read\write, Kinesthetic (VARK Learn Limited, 2017). Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
