My parents never earned a degree and immigrated to America with nothing but hopes and dreams. They wanted the best for their kids, so they worked hard to gain enough money to buy a house in Queens and have a family there. My aunts, uncles, and grandparents were also immigrating to America at the time, thus my parents had to support them too. My sister was born in 1988, seven years after my parents came to America. They had no time to take care of her and paid my grandmother to babysit her for the first few years. They only had time for her on the weekends and would try to spend every moment they had with her. Twelve years later, on a sunny day, my mother was gaining more weight and she kept complaining about how gassy she was. My sister jokingly told my mother that she was possibly pregnant and they all laughed it off, but she was actually …show more content…
My parents are my motivation to do better and to take every opportunity that I am given. Having a son in the family was very important to the Chinese culture and some traditional people would look down upon me for just being a girl, but my parents would never discourage me because they believe that everyone has potential. I always strive for a good future that my parents have always dreamed for me to have. They always place my future first and I could never thank them enough but to do my best and to make them proud. I understand the perception that a person should strive only for themselves but everyone has different approaches to their success. My parents are a big part of my motivation and, needless to say, they are a big part of my life. I could never imagine how life would be without my parents there to support me. Going to college and becoming successful pushes against the odds that were placed upon the daughter of two brave, ambitious
My parents have always pushed me to be better than they were. They knew that if I wanted to be successful I needed to go to college. In highschool, they always made me put my education before anything else. My parents didn’t go to college so they would always tell me to not make that mistake because their lives could have been easier if they would of just invested a few more years into their education. They would also tell me about all the opportunities that missed out on because they decided not to further their education.
Affected by my family, my background, and everything around me, I was born in a family who is the first generation to get here. My grandmother, and my parents, along with some other relatives, moved here in search of better opportunities, like those from other countries for the same idea. They started out fresh but had a hard time to get started, when I was little, I assumed it had to be somewhat easy, but for people who do not know English it is like starting from scratch, but they did well, they’ve made it.
We don’t realize how hard it is for immigrant parents to get their children education, and we judge and hate on something we have never been through. I guess it’s true you never know someone’s pain unless you go through it. Not everyone has the same privileges as others, some have to work twice as hard to try to give their children an opportunity towards an education on the contrary some American families have it simpler. I not blaming people who have families who were born here or say it’s wrong, but many people tend to affront children of immigrant parents and feel like they have the equitableness to say they aren’t suitable to receive public education.
For centuries, migrating has been a life changing decision for people that choose to enter the United States in search of a better future. Therefore, immigration is the permanent residency of people that choose to move to a new country. There are debates concerning the immigrants who enter the United Stated illegally and as the daughter of immigrant parents, I am fortunate to be born in this country.
My mother, who manage to speak broken English, and I, immigrated from Mongolia at the age of seven to meet my mother after being separated, live together now. We do not receive any help from relatives or the government. Last year, 2016, as I lived with my single mother, we truly defined the struggles of a first-generation immigrant family. She lost her job three times and each time, it made the financial burden grew to be bigger and bigger till it peered over us. The rent payments accumulated. This brought upon our family of two great difficulty to meet our daily needs such as food and even rent payments. As we were stumbling out of the debts due to unemployment, my mother got into a car accident and which helped us plummet further into poverty.
Immigration has been part of America since before the 17th century. America has evolved into what it is today due to immigration; however immigration as negative effects as well. Immigration is the building blocks for America. Every one that lives in America today are here because their ancestors immigrated here long ago. Over the years immigration as evolved into a more sophisticated matter. There are many laws they have been put in place to monitor and stop immigration. Immigration I a big factor in America but must be done correctly to insure Americas safety.
Many people in search of a better life and future for their families have immigrated to America. America is an extremely diverse nation with people from many different races and ethnic backgrounds. America is viewed as the melting pot of the world as throughout generations, people from all over the world have immigrated to America with similar goals. Immigration is a process most Americans have a close connection with. It is extremely likely that someone in your family immigrated at some point in time. Origins can be distant and for this reason the process and reasoning for immigrating can vary greatly.
I was raised in an encouraging household where both of my parents greatly valued education. Although they were high school graduates, neither could afford to attend college; a combination of family and financial woes ultimately halted their path. As a result, my parents frequently reminded me that getting a good education meant better opportunities for my future. To my parents, that seemed to be the overarching goal: a better life for me than the one they had. My parents wanted me to excel and supported me financially and emotionally of which the former was something their parents were not able to provide. Their desire to facilitate a change in my destiny is one of many essential events that contributed to my world view.
Living in between cultures is something that I have had to struggle with, for much of my life. As a second generation immigrant, I have found myself negotiating between two cultural identities. On one end I identify as an American, and on the other as a Latina who is Nicaraguan and Dominican. Throughout my life my identity has come under attack from both sides. I have been called too American by my immigrant family while also being called too Latina by peers and academia. As a first generation college student and second generation immigrant, I have faced the stressors of living in between cultures. I have received both acceptance and rejection, as well as experienced stress relating to my mother’s status in this country and my responsibility to help her navigate daily activities.
The United States is a country known for its variation of nationalities and ethnic races. After extensive research, and questioning I discovered that my ancestors originated from Norway and Switzerland. My family migrated to the United States in the late 1800’s from Norway due to social, economic, and religion reforms as well as, a surplus in the population. Learning of my ancestor’s migration to America has very much influenced my views on the existing immigration problems that the U.S. currently faces.
Today, in most cases, people don’t spend very much time thinking about why the society we live in presently, is the way it is. Most people would actually be surprised about all that has happened throughout America’s history. Many factors have influenced America and it’s society today, but one of the most profound ways was the way the “Old Immigrants” and “New Immigrants” came to America in the early to mid 1800s. The “Old Immigrants were categorized as the ones who came before 1860 and the “New Immigrants” being the ones who came between 1865 and 1920. The immigrants came to the United States, not only seeking freedom, but also education. Many immigrants also wanted to practice their religion without hindrance. What happened after the immigrants
At a young age, my teachers and parents taught me to believe that I could do and accomplish anything that I set my mind to. I grew up thinking that I was unstoppable and that the only limit to my achievements was the sky. However, during my second year in high school, I began to realize that I was not as unstoppable as I had thought. I began to experience the consequences of my parent’s decision of bringing me to the United States illegally. Among those consequences were, not being able to apply for a job, obtain a driver’s license or take advantage of the dual enrollment program at my high school, simply because I did not possess a social security number. I remember thinking that all of my hard work was in vain and that I was not going to
My parents have this perfect life for me pictured in their heads, and the first thing they see me doing is going to college. They expect the best of me, and so by going to college, I will not only have fulfilled their goals for me, but I will have accomplished one of the goals I have set for myself. In our culture, when parents come to the age where they can’t support themselves, it is the duty of the children to look after them.
Immigrants and green card renewals Immigrants are allowed to come to America, but they must have a green card or visa so they can be here legally. Most immigrants that come to America had horrible lives in their home land. This is why the immigrants need green cards so they can be safe. America should renew green cards for immigrants if they truly want to be in America because they can help the economy in the long run, and enjoy life and their dreams can come true.
