In a society that people fight for equality among races, there is still a problem that people are not fighting for. The equality of genders. Women have always been looked down upon men. They were originally just caregivers who took care of the children, house, and meals while the man was off at work making a money. When women finally showed that they should have equal opportunities as men with education and voting, the face of the world changed. The family orientation changed. Although women are now allowed to vote, go to school, and work, there is still one big difference that still is being addressed. Women do not receive equal salary as men, and this needs to change. Women make up more than half of the country, and although they are such a big part, equal salaries is still not prevalent. According to the White House Website, women make 79 cents for every dollar a man makes (Understand the Basics). This can be explained for many of different reasons. One cause for the difference is women hold lower paying jobs. For instance teachers are primarily women whereas jobs that are more dangerous jobs are held by men. Although this was put into effect so companies had to start giving comparable salaries, this was not the result. “The difference between men 's and women 's pay is actually wider today than it was in 1963 — the year the federal Equal Pay Act was enacted” (Stencel). It is amazing that such a law has been around for five years, and companies still refuse to give some the same salary in the work force. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.

Equal pay is a family issue. Women are a huge part of the United States labor force and they are working in positions in fields that are largely dominated by men. When a woman is not paid fairly they do not suffer alone their entire family suffers. To make sure there is a change people most start voting for more wage equality legislation and for the younger population that cannot vote yet they can help the change by speaking out against the wage gap since they are the generation of technology.

One problem that Americans are facing is the inequality between men and women, whether it is in everyday life or in a professional atmosphere. One step that has been taken toward equality was introduced with the Equal Pay Act of 1963, signed by President John F. Kennedy. This law was the first affecting the amount of job opportunities available for women and allowing them to work in traditionally male dominated fields. On the outside, this would sound like a solution where nothing could possibly go wrong, but it is not.

He further reports that the US Census Bureau states the male/female pay differential ranges between 15-50%, depending on the industry and the job title. From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons.
