Competence in nursing is having the knowledge, judgement, skills and experience to carry out professional duties correctly and effectively (RCN, 2009). All nurses must prove their level of competence before they can become registered as a nurse. They must do this by showing their competencies in all fields of nursing, and by proving their specific competencies in their own field of nursing, without doing this, they will not be allowed to practice. This ensures that all practicing nurses have a high level of competency. The nursing and midwifery council also states that to protect the public they ensure that they set standards for education, training and conduct, and by ensuring registered nurses keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
For this report I will compare and contrast two health care professions. The two professions I have chosen are Nursing and social work. In my report I will discuss education and registration, principles of the care profession, continuous development, the framework of clinical governance, code of conduct, parameters within professional practice and ethical issues and boundaries.
There is much controversy about the educational requirement to prepare nurses for practice. Rather the minimal education level be a diploma, associate degree in nursing (ADN), or bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) a need for an agreed upon education level for practice is necessary. There is a wide range of nursing related practices all of which do not require the same amount of education and this author agrees with the National League of Nursing (NLN) concerning scope of practice and preparation for the field of nursing; that an ADN or diploma program is a sufficient level of education for technical nursing practice and the BSN should be the minimum for practice as a professional nurse (Black, 2014, p. 136). This author thinks that the option for an ADN is vital to nursing as a whole, however agrees with the idea that any career requiring only two years of schooling is technical and not professional. This places ADNs in the same category as technicians and assistance in other health care fields (Taylor, 2008, p. 613). This paper examines the necessity for nursing education beyond an associate degree for professional nursing practice in order to meet the increase of complex medical needs.

These core competencies are guidelines that build upon existing core competencies and help to prepare NPs in implementing a full scope of practice as a licensed practitioner (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012). These competencies promote consistency and quality.

Continued Professional Development is now an important part of ongoing registration with the NMC and is essential in maintaining professional standards. In order to revalidate, nurses must write 5 reflective accounts within a 3 year period and each reflective account must explain what the nurse has learnt from the CPD activity and explain how it relates to the Code of Conduct and in particular the 4 themes of Prioritising People, Practicing Effectively, Preserving Safety and Promoting Professionalism and Trust.. Nurses also have to discuss the written reflective accounts with another NMC registered nurse coving the 5 reflective accounts Section 9.2 of the NMC code of conduct asks nurses to “gather and reflect on feedback from a variety of sources, using it to improve your practice and performance” (NMC, 2015) This is why the NMC promotes reflective practice as it ensures the nurse is practicing within their competency and in a safe manner while identifying any areas for improvement in their practice Reflective practice also makes the nurses more accountable for their actions.. (NMC, 2015) Reflective writing is an important feature of professional practice. Nurses have to keep a record of their continued professional development. At annual reviews nurses are able to present evidence of their development through a portfolio which should contain reflective accounts of their practice. These reflective accounts will help them identify strengths and weaknesses, highlight their performance, improve their skills and highlight any area that could be
Continuous professional development is very much part of the process of lifelong learning as it is a range of activities related to learning through which health care professionals maintain their ability to practice safely and effectively within legal boundaries. (Health and Care Professions Council, 2014 p.6).The key consideration regarding the concept of lifelong learning is that there are a multitude of definitions of lifelong learning however the concept of lifelong learning has universal connotations of learning and evolving which are essential in nursing because of the constant changes occurring in health care
Continuing professional development is important for the individual because it ensures they continue to be knowledgeable
The IHP Framework is a model that outlines the core concepts of becoming a competent health professional. The IHP framework is used to develop one’s self as a health professional that is not only knowledgeable and skilled in their field of work but is equally empathetic and reflective, allowing care to be provided to all patients with respect, responsibility and the highest standard of ethics. This all-encompassing approach to health allows for constant growth and improvement by encouraging an awareness of self through reflection. It guides students to a deeper understanding of professionalism and its dimensions in their specific work environment by focusing on integrating the three central components: the knowing; empathic and reflective. The IHP framework creates a balanced foundation of professionalism on which life-long learning and improvement is nurtured. (Olckers, Gibbs, Duncan 2007:2)
There are many requirements for nursing. Nursing takes time, practice, hard-work, and dedication. The “road” to becoming a registered nurse often seems long and hopeless. There are so many things to remember- numerical values, parts of the body, and almost every medication known to man, among many other
