Community Walk
As an intern at P.S. 137, my outlook of the school and the neighborhood in which it is situated has drastically changed over the past semester. My initial commute to the school did not help me frame the community in a positive light. I found there to be too many potholes, and too much trash scattered across its streets. I was not familiar with this area, and do not recall having any preexisting biases towards the residents. I remember the first time I pulled into the school’s never-ending parking lot, and felt flutters in my stomach as I thought of how small one may feel in such a large institution. I also questioned what I was doing interning in a school known for its corruptness. P.S. 137 has a bad reputation for giving students credit for eating lunch, of having students who take lewd pictures of staff members, and for the multitudes of gangs in which the students take part.
Located in the South of Brooklyn, P.S. 137 , a school which has earned an overall B rating on its school report for the last three consecutive years (NYCDOE, 2014), has been in existence for forty five years. It is known for its unique campus layout,

P.S. 137 is surrounded by low-rise apartment buildings, another common feature of this neighborhood. Housing in Gravesend is somewhat more expensive than other communities in New York City. The average house value in this neighborhood is $631,000, and the median rent is $1,700 (Gravesend is a Neighborhood in New York City, n.d.). According to the 2010 Census, the average income of the people of Gravesend is $49,669 (Community Facts, 2010). I could tell while speaking to my interviewees how much passion they had for the school alone. Our generation does not focus on what was done before but what is here now. When looking back in time the history is much relevant then the present. Completing this project made me appreciate Scotlandville even more for what they’ve done to make the Scotlandville family what it is today.
Because Belmont Shore was built on the idea of businesses serving the needs of the community, its “culture and production are related, the advocacy of a different system of production is in some way a cultural directive, indicating not only a way of life but,” a representation of its own society. The people who live near Second Street appear to be high-middle class themselves. With the exception of the homeless, it is safe to make this assumption because of the lifestyle reflected upon Belmont Shore. Living near the ocean is extremely expensive due to luxury, and the conditions of the homes around the neighborhood appear to be well kept and renovated nicely to keep up with modern fashion. Knowing this, it would be costly to live near and in Belmont Shore; however, culture alike lifestyle, “must be finally interpreted in relation to its underlying system of production”. With the types of businesses that are run, the shops attract those among the age group of twenty years and up: working class. There are pubs and bars, there are diners and restaurants, but very little entertainment except for the company of friends. The first condition that has come to affect the teenagers at this school due to institutionalized racism is the extremely low budget the schools are give when contrasted with the west side schools. Personally, I believe that the first step in bettering oneself is bettering one’s environment, therefore it is imperative that I take care of my surroundings. One of the components that consist of the student success includes their environment, in other words, the school itself. School is a place where the students spends most of their time, interacting with people and friends. As I recall, high school served as a second home for me, in which I felt very comfortable and safe in. A Community can be defined as a group of people who don’t just live in the same area, but also share the same interests, experiences and often concerns about the area in which they live. Often when individuals have lived on a street or in an area for a while they become familiar with each other and the issues surrounding them. Children often attend the same schools and grow up together, again sharing similar experiences. In some instances adults may work together, and quite commonly all community members will share the same doctors, dentists, hospitals, health visitors and other public services and facilities.
Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
The school site I conducted my observations was PS/IS 30 Mary White Ovington. Located in the neighborhood of Bay Ridge in Downtown Brooklyn. This school in particular carries grades k-8, however I only observed a 1st grade general education class. Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
Community engagement is the active participation of local residents and community groups in the decisions that affect their lives (Herefordshire Council, 2013). Therefore, community engagement should be about engaging in open communication to ensure the council understands the needs of the local community.
