The Importance Of Capitalism In Upton Sinclair's The Jungle

An author depicts certain elements of a historical time period in his or her novel by incorporating literary elements. Upton Sinclair, the author of the novel ,The Jungle, was a Socialist who supported the rights of the working class in America’s economy. He lived during the time of the American Industrial Revolution when the lower class of the society were poverty-stricken while the upper class were wealthy and corrupt. He had observed the meat-packing factories of Chicago and incorporated the knowledge he had learned into his novel. In writing this novel, Sinclair’s goal was to expose the harsh conditions in American factories (“Upton Sinclair”). The novel takes place during the early 1900s in Chicago were a working immigrant man named Jurgis
Jurgis views Capitalism as the catalysts for the problems in the economy. Capitalism is an economic system used by the United States that allows private ownership meaning that the government does not have much control over American companies. The minority of the economy during the early 1900’s was the wealthy Capitalist class while the majority of America’s population was the poor working class (Bakthawar 2). Socialism is a political movement with the goal of changing the Capitalist economy, so that it no longer exists. Socialists want a society where industries are regulated by the government (Merriam-Webster). Socialism works towards ending the misery of those in poverty by increasing wages, decreasing working hours, and improving working conditions. “[Jurgis] would no longer be the sport of circumstances, he would be a man, with a will and a purpose; he would have something to fight for, something to die for, if need be! Here were men who would show him and help him; and he would have friends and allies, he would dwell in the sight of justice, and walk arm and arm with power” (Sinclair 317). After hearing an inspirational speech by a Socialist trying to win an election, Jurgis finds the purpose in his life after he had lost everything he cared for. The speech inspires Jurgis to dedicate his life to fight against Capitalism and the leading powers in the American economy. The resolution to slavery was the Civil War, an opportunity to fight for equal rights and freedom from enslavement. Both white and African-American abolitionists fought hard to end slavery. This gave freed slaves a chance to fight for the freedom of slaves in the United States, to gain the Constitutional rights that every American deserves. Northern America won the war against Southern America, so freedom was gained
