The Importance Of Banning Books In Schools

The librarian would not want a book about how to be a terrorist in the school library. Banning books from school libraries does not mean you can’t write and publish a certain book, it means that the school don’t want that book in the school libraries. Certain book provides encouragement of damaging lifestyles. There are books out there that contained sexual materials and inappropriate dialogues. The materials in some of the books are unsuited to certain age groups. Moreover, some books violate racial themes and ethics. People who disagree would say that banning books violates the First amendment, and it’s anti-education. You still can read those books, but outside of school. School libraries should be allowed to have a list of banned books

because libraries are considered to be the storehouse of knowledge.

Content of some book encourages lifestyle choices that are not usual or could be dangerous or damaging. Some of the best-selling books praise criminal activity, contains descriptions of cruelty, bizarre violence, torture, death, and human elimination. Lord Of The Flies is one of the most frequently banned book because of the book’s depiction of violence. Student read these types of books and became courageous to do the same in reality. Books with good intention were often misguided by their readers. There are some authors who try to use sexual content and profanity in their books to attract audiences.  

There are lots of books that come out are very graphic. Especially when a library has kids entering it all the time, there should be restrictions on what they give out. Many books with content that include sexual situations or dialog should be restricted in the library. Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Girl was banned because it’s very graphic and it’s pretty pornographic for the students to read. It’s inappropriate for a school to be giving this material out to the kids when it’s really the parents’ job to give the students this information. Fictional books such as “Of Mice And Men”, should be entertainment for students , but this book is banned in some state due to seductive language and violence. Books with misconception often are unsuitable for certain age groups. Banned books extract discussions about society, gender, race and other important issues.

Books with racial themes often criticize racism. A school would never want it students to read a book that supports racism. For example, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, this book has been banned because of the free-flowing use of the "N" word, for racial slurs, and for promoting white supremacy. There are books that promote family rebellion, disrespecting elders, and anti-personal ethics. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, is banned because it promotes youthful rebellion and disrespect of authority. In 1985, “A Light in the Attic” was challenged at an elementary school in Wisconsin because it encourages children to break dishes so they won’t have to dry them. And still many would think that banning books in the library is a violation of free speech.

Considering the many reasons for banning books in the library, the opposition would argue that banning books violates the First Amendment. The reason being is that by allowing the school to ban books, we are allowing our rights to be violated. By banning certain books, you are taking away the authors’ and readers’ absolute right to free speech. Whether a book is appropriate or not, is a matter of opinion. Students should be able to challenge themselves with the literature that they read. If a child wants to read a book, its up to his or her parents to decide if it is suitable for their kids. Banning books is a way to limiting the supply of knowledge. Regardless of the oppositions opinion, if you want to read a book, which is inappropriate for school, you can do it outside of school and your rights of free speech would not be violated.
