Dear School Principal I understand that banning certain books at school is a controversial topic. Some books are difficult to understand why they are banned since they don't violate school guidelines. The reason does not seem to be valid enough. Even kid books like "Charlotte's Web" are banned in certain schools! The Bible is also another common book banned in schools. People believe that by banning a book it will keep students safe, when in reality they are limiting their education and viewpoint/opinions. Many schools have the fantasy fiction book "Charlotte's Web" banned. A fantasy fiction book is a book in which the characters do things that would not be possible in real life. The pig (Wilbur) and the spider (Charlotte) are friends and they are able to talk! Sounds like an entertaining story for little kids, right? No, unfortunately some schools have this book banned. Schools ban this book because it talks about death and talking about animals is not realistic. They think this can slow down children's intellectual growth and restrict awareness of the world. While this may be true, kids are allowed to have a childhood with a huge imagination. Later on in life, they will learn what is true and what is not. Fiction books and …show more content…
For this reason, many schools have the Bible banned. Since there are diverse schools, there are different beliefs. Schools ban the Bible to avoid conflict in an educational setting. Some schools argue that some Bible verses are too violent for kids. Although these are valid reasons to ban the Bible at school, I still do not agree with it. I think that having the book there for educational purposes is alright. If someone wants to read the Bible, it will be available to them. If they do not want to read it, then they do not have to. If we are being realistic, not everyone in the world is going to think the same or have the same
The practice of the censorship of books in schools has been prevalent due to the explicit content of them. Parents have been complaining to schools about books that count as required reading because they disapprove with the points made in the book. If a book consists of offensive or sexually explicit material, then parents would challenge the schools about them in order to prevent their children from reading them. Censorship in general has been an intensely debated issue because it is considered an infringement to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution while others argue it is used to conceal inappropriate things (Aliprandini and Sprague). The banning of books in school curriculum has also been debated since parents see certain books as inappropriate while others argue that banning them hinders student learning. Against the censorship of books in schools, Fenice Boyd and Nancy Bailey, authors of Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, believe that banning books creates a barrier between students and intellectual development (Boyd and Bailey, 655). Banning books from schools and removing them from the curriculum prevents students from exploring different ideas and developing creativity and critical thinking skills.
It used the characters to express different perspectives on the same issue. Ultimately it was banned because of a lot of controversial language, sexually explicit situations, mention of drugs, and a lot of other variety of reasons. This book has been removed from the libraries of mostly middle schools and has been banned in their classroom discussion. Though this book has not been banned on a large scale though because most critics think positively about the book. The main issue is just what age group should be permitted to read this book and what age group shouldn’t be allowed to read the book.
Countries worldwide actively call for the banning of books that are found to be politically inconvenient, religiously awkward, or embarrassing in one form or another. But for writers like Russia's Vasily Grossman, a book's ban means far more than just a dip in sales. In 1961, he pleaded with the Soviet censors, "I am physically free, but the book to which I have dedicated my life is in jail." (Merkelson). A book represents an idea, thus limiting access to a book is banning the representation of an idea. The banning of books in American schools should not be allowed, because banning books will prevent students from learning the reason for the controversy and alternate viewpoints they can come to on their own.
...in high school and are normally subjected to crude language and sexual content throughout the day, so this would also give them a better understanding of the book. Banning of certain books help protect children from the evil ways of the world that they should not see until an older, more mature age. The cruel language and violence within this book may influence children to act out and may possibly alter their future.
School boards and teachers have a responsibility for protecting the minds of their students and covering age appropriate material. However, does this responsibility cover the extreme act of banning books from school classrooms? Does not the teacher have a duty to introduce to their students world issues in order to better the students ability to cope with problems in the world? How does a school decide which books should be banned from the classroom, and should it be left up to the teacher to decide what is decided in his/her classroom. By banning books from the classroom, we prevent our students from learning about controversial topics in a safe environment, and we also encroach upon the student’s freedom of reading what they want in school.
All kids love the "Harry Potter" series. But they don't know that by reading it they are "indulging in sinful and Godless acts" or that these books are putting them on the fastest train to Hell. I own A Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Flies, To Kill a Mockingbird, Twelfth Night, and Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, all of which have been or are banned. What's going on here?
Many parents are against their kids reading I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, because it speaks about a young Angelou and her experiences with rape and racial discrimination. If a book contains racial slurs, like this one does, it is frowned upon by many parents of the community (Leigh). Another reason arguing for book banning are those who have strong religious views or believe that gay rights are wrong generally. These people have a problem with books that encourage the acceptance of homosexuality. But most commonly, books dealing with graphic sexual content are banned from the eyes of children, regardless of religious affiliation. These parents wish to protect the innocence of their young children by making the material unavailable to their children and their peers (Information Commons). Ernest Hemingway 's work of Farewell to Arms was banned by a variety of people: school officials, parents, even Adolf Hitler. To Hitler, this books speaks about World War 1, and threatened the Nazi ideology (Leigh). To the school officials, this book was too sexually profane to be available in their high schools. For every reason to not ban a book, there pops up with one in favor of it. Both sides offer their merits and values concerning book
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.”-Dr. Seuss. What Dr. Seuss’s statement is telling us is that books have given us knowledge about ideas, life, and the world. One of the greatest inventions of mankind is a book. A book is a set of printed sheets that are put together fill with information that people read about. Books have been around with us since ages from generations to generations. It is all around the world with different cultures and languages, books have given people the joy of story, information, and knowledge. Everyone should have the right to read whatever book they are seem interested. Well, it is not the case; there are some people out there trying to challenge books from being ban. It is ridiculous that books are being taken away from readers. Today, books are still currently being challenged or banned. This type of doing is censorship. This is a problem that people need to look at and think about. Books are in school, library, in our homes yet they are too much for the people. Why are books so sensitive for readers to be challenged? There are two set of sides to this issue, one side are the people that wants to remove the books and challenged them to be ban, the other side are the one that oppose the banning of books, allowing to read whatever they want. Which side is right? This leads to the question as to why books are currently being challenged or banned. How does banning books relate to censorship and what are some solutions that can solve the problem of banning books?
It is challenging to choose what types of books are appropriate for children to read. Now in days the choice is even more challenging then it was a couple of centuries ago. There are books that feature violence, sexual content, offensive language or all. These subjects question concern parents because it can teach young children about several subjects that are usually avoided. Times have changed and so have books and what they contain, which makes banned books an important subject. Books can be a great source to learn from whether it history or just a folk tale, but parents and teachers must take into consideration the ages of the audience. Maturity is not achieved until a later time and some children may have difficulty reaching that point.
Every year more and more books are demanded to be removed from school, and most of the time it happens. The books that are being banned are ones which were classics back in the day. If a parent doesn’t like a book and does not want their kid reading it, they can demand to have it removed but that can be a process. So, in other words, parents just take them off the shelf themselves. Librarians have been known to do this too, because if someone does complain then it could lead to them possibly losing their jobs. With so many people complaining about books, schools and librarians have to be extra careful with which books they purchase and out on
Censorship in School Libraries The most debatable and controversial form of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Censorship of books in school libraries is neither uncommon nor an issue of the past. Books with artistic and cultural worth are still challenged constantly by those who want to control what others read. The roots of bigotry and illiteracy that fuel efforts to censor books and free expression are unacceptable and unconditional.
When our country was founded in 1776, it was founded on the liberty of expressing and having your voice be heard which gave us the first amendment. Part of the first amendment is freedom of speech which lets many authors express themselves through words and informing readers about real world issues that nowadays people just ignore, and information that might be essential to someone on the days come forth .By challenging, banning or censoring a authors book you're basically restraining them from using their first amendment. When censoring a book it’s censoring a part of a book that either one or more have found offensive and with banning its the whole book. Banning or challenging a book is absurd , no one has the right to decide for everyone
One reason I would like to support my inquiry with is maturity. I must say that while it does seem reasonable to ban certain books for explicit material in grammar schools, and even intermediate schools, the upper grade levels- high school students and so on; should not be forced to suffer such consequences. I feel that at my 11th year grade level, students should be mature enough to accept certain material such as sexual activity or political satires in books. Furthermore, being we are under our parent’s rule until the age of eighteen, a note may be sent home to notify parents of presentation of mentioned controversial novels or classics in our lessons. The parent may be able to sign a form or send in a note if they feel their child is not mature enough, or if such reading goes against specific personal beliefs of the family. The student may be given an alternative assignment if above mentioned form or note is returned with a denial of permission to study the book....
Why are books banned? Better yet what are the reasons for banning books. Banned Books are always judged. By what they contain or what they embrace. To me they show everything else books have to offer. To open a world of imagination and excitement. Some books can show different perspectives on a subject while some can teach you things you can’t learn in a classroom or on tv. I’ll admit I understand the reasoning behind banning some books, but if we continue to have banned books, especially books that are banned for poor reasons, then it won’t be too long before live in a world without books. That does not need to happen.
Anything and Everything Did you know that the author with the most challenges in their books since 2013, is Dav Pilkey, author of the series Captain Underpants(Crum)? Imagine if there were no books in the world, we wouldn’t have ancient history, no knowledge from the past for humanity to reflect on, and people wouldn’t know the stories of ‘heroines and heroes’. Books dare to go over the uncommon topics that people don’t care to go over, and oftentimes books spark people’s imagination because they only have one limit, the author’s ability to write. Books shouldn’t be banned because they are an essential tool for learning and also encourage empathy and social-emotional development. Books are an essential and great tool for learning, whether you're
