The concept of art plays an important role in the development and learning of children. Art is a form of expression where individuals are able to express their own feelings, ideas, and creativity. By incorporating art integration with schools from grades K-12 students demonstrate a high academic performance and a happy, satisfying safe school environment where students are successfully open to learning and are not afraid to show their true self. Cornett states that “teachers promote individual strength” (Cornett). Teachers incorporate art integration into academics by coming up with a creative way of teaching. Bob Riley a school principal of a public school in the city of Chicago believes that “The Classrooms is a teacher’s island. They have their students and their curriculum, teaching the way they teach” (2015). There is two type of motivational teachers. The first type is those teachers who have a passion for education but only focus on the aspect of teaching their students the important common core standards that must be achieved before the end of the year. The second type of teachers is those who have a strong passion for education but know how to successfully incorporate the arts into the standards which drive students to successfully achieve a high academic performance and a strong motivation for school. Likewise, Judy Kilma an art professor at the Integrated Arts Academy also believes that most teachers have the power to incorporate the arts into their subjects. According to Kilma “If you pick a subject area like science, social studies, math or literacy and you integrate it with an art form, what you do is connect the two and find ways to really integrate the two so they can lean on each other”
Art is intended for all to enjoy and learn from. Through an art curriculum; phonics, mathematics, and readiness skills to name a few can be learned through an art curriculum. With this curriculum a teacher can adapt that centers to teach those with diverse abilities such as emotional and intellectual challenges, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and orthopedic impairments.
Rhys Southan’s essay “Is Art a Waste of Time?” is about art and if it can really help people who are suffering or is it just better to hand over your money. In Yo-Yo Ma’s essay “necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” he focuses more on art being used as educational purposes to essentially create more innovative/empathetic people. The Importance of Arts Education Jane Alexander, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), once said, “Many children are missing out on something which gives their education context, gives their lives depth and meaning, and prepares them to be the future workforce.” This “something” that she spoke of is music and art education. Unfortunately, she is entirely correct. We are currently seeing a dramatic cut in arts education curriculum in our public schools due to the limited amount of time and funding. In many cases, budget cutbacks mean arts education cutbacks.
Having Art in elementary can seriously help them express themselves and all their uniqueness in their Art. It helps them choose to be in Artistic activities when they are older, help them develop their creativeness and have something to do outside of school that is exciting. It can also help them succeed in high school because they then know what interests them and what to proceed in doing that certain Art activity. Art can be used to raise scores in every subject, “Students who took four years of art classes scored 91 points higher on their SAT exams than those who took half a year or less. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
High schools can enhance a student's educational pathway by requiring fine arts classes as a graduation requirement. The beneficial aspects of requiring fine arts classes will promote educational success, trigger discovery in one's inner self-worth, and acquaint the society surrounding the students.
The arts can have an exponential effect on a child's growth and development in school and society. It teaches confidence building, collaboration, and dedication. Influences children to develop problem solving skills, non-verbal communication, and perseverance that most adults today may not even know. It allows them to be creative and explore the worlds and even themselves as growing human beings. The arts can open them up to new experiences and possibilities that before were otherwise unseen, and can even help them excel in multiple subjects such as math and reading.
