Mahatma Gandhi, whose philosophy and profound belief in justice inspired the entire world, once declared that “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” Animals are important for countless reasons, including their vital role within the diverse ecosystems, their unquestionable contribution to various scientific disciplines and knowledge and, as pets, their psychological and emotional support they can offer to humans. However, it is a dishonour that, each year, millions of animals are placed at a high risk of injury, neglected, abused and suffer in silence. My fondness and respect of all living creatures undoubtedly explain my revulsion and enmity toward animal cruelty, whether it be a deliberate act or negligence. The latter is in fact my ultimate dream job. I strongly believe that I have chosen the best career for my future, because I despise the fact that people abuse and use animals as tools for commercial profit such as in the cases of puppy mills, dog fighting or cock fighting. Additionally, I have always been profoundly passionate about other creatures, regardless of the species.

Foremost, as stated by the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA), the non-profit organisation rescued roughly 27,200 injured, neglected and abused animals in 2015. Regretfully, cases of animals being beaten, burned, poisoned or stabbed to death are not infrequent. It is needless to say that the career of a veterinarian can be provoking, infuriating and dismaying. Based on this evidence, there is a common belief that one should not choose this career, since these professionals witness animal cruelty.
