Attention Getter- Ghandhi once said, “To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. The more helpless the creature, the more that it is entitled to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” The mistreatment of animals only continues to get worse and something needs to be done to stop it.

Credibility Statement-I have volunteered at various animal shelters and clinics, and have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking site of animal abuse.

I. Various groups of animals are subject to animal cruelty.

A. One group is those animals we consider to be pets.

1. Animal abuse for pets can range from neglecting to take care of the animal to the actual deliberate abuse of the animal such as beating, shooting, stabbing, or lighting the animal on fire.

a. According to Pet Finder, “People who commit even the most heinous crimes against animals are often not prosecuted to the full extent of the law. In states where animal cruelty is considered a misdemeanor, individuals who commit intentional cruelty crimes against animals can receive, at most one year in jail and 1,000 dollar fin. However, perpetrators often receive no more than probation.

2. Dogs are the most common victims of animal abuse with cats, horses, and livestock not following far behind.

1. You can take action and report inhumane conditions to the USDA, write letters to the editor, and even pressure local officials to stop subsidizing zoos with taxpayer’s money.

2. Encourage your zoos to never accept animals captured from the wild and to make space available to those rescued exotic animals that actually need a permanent home.
