My topic is to restore academic integrity in sports, hold head coaches accountable
I agree with the statement of the long time successful football coach Mack Brown when he told New York Times in his recent statement, But it’s just not so.“When you hear presidents and athletic directors talk about character and academics and integrity, none of that really matters. The truth is, nobody ever been fired for those things. They get fired for losing.” That should be just the opposite of this situation. In order to show disciplinary actions for academic integrity there must be consequences to show the university has administered administration’s policies to protect the programs in place and all reputation’s involved.

Many universities have created programs for even the most at risk student athlete. But that pressure for academic performance is still felt by all involved from the student to the coaches as well as the university. Personally speaking from experience about pressure to sustain grade average for navy college that pays the “TA” for the navy personal or that member refunds for the failed subject. That to me is extremely important to maintain and keeps my integrity in check to proceed toward bachelors degree program if not passed.
The same should be attached to this article and that would solve the blame game between students, coaches, and university. If for some reason the student isn’t meeting the the academic progress rate, to achieve minimum standards that student tends to be at risk in a loss of scholarships.
Head coaches, should be held more accountable for these students not attaining the mark needed for the academic progress as well as the performance on the field. For that reason no paid bonuses should be awarded for minimum sustained scores to maintain standards. Therefore these coaches and students should adopt some type of system to ensure that there is true success not a failure

Major collegiate athletics programs are able to generate millions of dollars for their institutions, but are not able to show any evidence of successfully graduating their black male athletes that contribute to their success in generating those millions of dollars. These universities in turn, are failing these student athletes whom were promised that they would nurture them intellectually as well as athletically. A four year report published by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education presents statistics that shows that the six major sports conferences in the NCAA (ACC, Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, SEC, Pac 12) have weak graduation rates for male African American Student athletes. Jessica Anderson of the associated press wrote an article titled, Black Athletes' Graduation Rates Weak where she used evidence from the University of Pennsylvania’s study as well as information from The Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education to present findings that showed that only about, “50.2 percent of African-American male student-athletes graduated within six years and that 96.1 percent of the schools graduated African-American male student-athletes at rates lower than student-athletes overall” (Anderson). Yet, the evidence that African American male student athletes are struggling to graduate as compared to their white counterparts does not simply stop there. In fact, Shaun Harper the executive director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania reports that, “50.2 percent of black male athletes graduate within six years from colleges compared with 67 percent of athletes over all, 73 percent of undergraduates, and 56 percent of black undergraduate men” (Harper)....

Students should desire to earn higher grades, not necessarily just earn them to surpass each other. Higher grades can be an indicator that a student is sincerely learning, a feat which should be celebrated. Subsequently, there are a wide variety of scholarships out in the world, so students don’t necessarily compete for the same ones. There are ones based on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, job (or lack thereof), one’s parent’s job, and a number of other factors. Scholarships exist out there if a student is simply willing to search. Students also adopt extracurricular activities to cause themselves appear preferable, nevertheless this is not required. No one forces students to join extracurricular activities (except maybe their parents). Moreover, there are other ways to cause oneself appear desirable to colleges and jobs than being a participant in extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities are an excellent way for students to meet people who are fond of the same interests as them. The impact of college athletic programs on academics has always been a controversial and contentious topic. It seems that athletic programs have some contemplative effects on academics of colleges and universities. Different people have different ideas about how college athletic programs should be carried on. College presidents, administrations, student athletes, parents of students, and athletic trainers are along with these people who point out different facts about the fallouts of athletics on academics. A bunch of people suggest that athletic programs should be dropped from college system, while another group suggests that athletic programs should be taken care with more advertence. An analysis on the effects of college athletics on academics has two personal approaches: college athletics undermine academics, and athletics amplify academic experience.
College athletes are manipulated every day. Student athletes are working day in and day out to meet academic standards and to keep their level of play competitive. These athletes need to be rewarded and credited for their achievements. Not only are these athletes not being rewarded but they are also living with no money. Because the athletes are living off of no money they are very vulnerable to taking money from boosters and others that are willing to help them out. The problem with this is that the athletes are not only getting themselves in trouble but their athletic departments as well.
Jeff Barker explains that exceptional athletes are accepted to large universities, such as the University of Maryland, North Carolina State, and Georgia Tech, attending to more lenient criteria and are “specially admitted,” in his article “For ‘at-risk’ Athletes, a Boost that Sometimes Leads Nowhere.” Documents have shown that these athletes face costly academic challenges leading to a lower performance. Barker quotes Anne Duncan, the United States Education Secretary, who says that “too many special admits are not capable of doing college work and competition on Day One.” Without a doubt, admitting such admits proposes a problem. It is unfair to the numerous applicants who meet the requirements but are denied acceptance due to the lack of space. Student athletes should not be paid more than any other student at State University, because it implies that the focus of this university is that an extracurricular activity as a means of profit. Intercollegiate athletics is becoming the central focus of colleges and universities, the strife and the substantial sum of money are the most important factors of most university administration’s interest. The Health and fitness industry have many ethical issues involved which was very interesting to me. I have never purchased a membership at a health club, but from the reading I learned a lot about how they operate. It amazed me that health clubs push their sales representatives to get 200-300 new members a month (Amend, 1992). This is a large amount of people for such a short amount a time, which means some members are not fully aware of the fine print of the membership agreement. Also the reading mentions that more than half of instructors at these clubs do not have valid certification (Copeland et al, 1988),. This is unethical because the members pay each month for the service of a qualified staff member to assist them in exercise and fitness. Safety of the members could also be at risk working out with a non-qualified trainer. Learning how these companies do business make me want to hold off as long as possible to join a gym.
Around the country, college athletic programs are pushing their athletes more and more every day. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) is an association set up to regulate the athletic programs of colleges in the United States and Canada such as eligibility, sportsmanship, and play. Due to NCAA rules, the “student” comes first in “student athlete.” This means that in order to be a full time student, 12 credit hours a semester are required, and in order to compete in athletics, students must maintain a core GPA of 2.3 or higher. It may seems easy right now but throw in lifting, games and practices, along with team meetings, and you’ve got yourself a full time job on the side.

Ethical behavior is one of the most important aspects in every day life. People who use ethical behavior usually gain the trust and confidence among their peers. In sports management for example, when a manager of a team uses an ethical judgment or has set rules on ethical behavior they usually sets up their team to have the same judgment. Many still seem to believe a “free” education is more than enough, when in reality, not many players are actually given a free education. While every student has the potential to earn financial aid and academic scholarship money, athletes are also capable of receiving athletic money. A majority of athletes today are either playing without an athletic scholarship or a partial scholarship, in addition to other grants and academic subsidies. To non-athletes, this may seem unfair, but look at the big picture. These athletes are spending much of their time in the gym, on the practice field, and even in the trainer’s room dealing with injuries on a daily basis. It is extremely difficult to manage school, athletics, and life itself at once let alone finding the time to earn money working at the same time. When trying to juggle a packed schedule, it is easy to forget important things or at the very least ones effectiveness is hindered thus weaken the ability to be successful. There is also a great deal of stress and anxiety that comes with the game. In fact, there is a field of psychology specifically designed for athletes and their mental privation. The mental ailments and lack of free time definitely prohibit athletes from being as successful as they can academically. Conversely, non-athletes have much more time available allowing them to study and work at a younger age. Although athletic scholarships certainly assist these athletes in attending schools with inflated tuition fees, it is by no means enough for many collegiate athletes.
The admissions of student athletes has been a topic of discussion for quite some time. In most cases, it is brought up when students who have a perfect high school resume are turned down and athletes’ who have a not so perfect high school resume are accepted. Sports are governed by sets of rules or customs and often, competition. Sports have always been a way to connect us to our past and to build optimism about the future. Sport’s a way to bond the people despite differences in race, age and gender. However, today the game that is supposed to teach character, discipline and team work is teaching cheating. And in today’s world, with fame, endorsement, drugs and so much to gain, it is not surprising that athletes are cheating in sports. Cheating in sports is not new thing; it started the day when humans first discovered athletic competitions. According to the Los Angeles Times (August 20, 2006) “More than 2,000 years before Mike Tyson bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear and was disqualified in the boxing ring, Eupolus of Thessaly, a boxer in the Olympics of 388 BC, bribed three of his opponents to take dives. Historians consider Eupolus' crime the first recorded act of cheating in sports” (Pugmire 7). We have been seeking an easier way to win. Cheating in sports, which recently has manifested in diverse forms, is more a result of increasing pressure to win from the sponsors and team management, especially in the context of sport becoming a career rather than an act of recreation. What actually constitutes cheating? When does gamesmanship stop and cheating start? And should we try to stop cheating in sports? The use of illegal drugs, huge amount of money and betting is ruining the fame of sports. Hence, cheating in sports is caused by drugs and the desire for endorsement and fame which are getting more effective in recent.
