Social Worker/ Child, Family, and School Social Worker It was a tie between a psychologist and a social worker that I wanted to research. All this time I thought I wanted a career in psychology. Going through all that I have really learned about myself, I felt that I am better rounded for a career in social work. I believe that I have the skills and I will gain the knowledge to make it in this career. I also learned that just like psychology, there is many sub areas of social work. I could be working with people with disabilities, those with addictions, and my personal favorite children (OOH). Lastly, depending on what area interests me the most, the salaries do differ and each area will be continuing to grow in population. One thing that I learned about myself is my Holland Code. My Holland Code is really close to the Holland Code of a social worker, which is SEC. The first one is social. Any occupation that fits this helps people or provides services for them (O*NET). Main one is actively listening to the clients. Making sure that you have the full attention of whoever is speaking, asking an occasional question when appropriate, and making sure to understand the points being made (O*NET). Being an active listener helps people cope with whatever challenges they are facing in their lives. You also have to be a good persuader. Along with helping people you also have to persuade them to change their minds or behaviors (O*NET). That is a really great skill to have especially with dealing with those that have an addiction. I believe another great skill to have, and one I know that I need to work on, is time-management. Not only do you have to deal with clients, but also you have some administrative responsibilities.
