Giving to others through humanitarian projects is not only inclusive of providing monetary solutions for food. Philosophies and intention to reach specific goals are also associated with the needs of others. The Hunger Project is designed with the central goal of eradicating poverty. However, it is found that this is not done only by feeding the poor, but instead through empowerment initiatives that allow others to change their lives. When looking at the approach used to The Hunger Project, it can be seen that the ability to provide empowerment to others will assist in changing lives through donations. The impact which is made by making a donation creates an initiative not only through the power of changing lives of those in need. It also alters the socio political landscape and the global society at large. This impact is one which can redefine the overall functions in the globe, specifically by eradicating poverty.
The vision of The Hunger Project is based on the belief that every man and woman can become empowered, allowing them to have the food and shelter in which they need. By

It provides humanitarian relief through sustainable development, creating prosperous communities in which hunger can be eliminated as a humanitarian concern. The philosophies and mission of The Hunger Project extend beyond the need for food and into the need for sustainable development within communities that are suffering from a lack of resources. By donating to this cause, it creates a connection to a larger global, social and political movement. When hunger is eradicated, it changes the use and development of resources while providing a sense of sustainability to the globe at large. My personal contribution holds the intention of not only assisting with humanitarian efforts, but also relates to changing the sociopolitical landscape of the
“A Simple Matter of Hunger” narrates the life of Eleanor Wilson, foster mother to an infant with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Monitoring Jancey is full-time work, and it involves dealing with insensitive and ignorant people, incompetent healthcare, and consistent bad news. Although the child is not her own and raising her promises never-ending heartbreak and difficult, Eleanor cares for Jancey as well as any mother can.
In Peter Singer’s Famine, Affluence, and Morality, he critiques the way in which modern societies have grown accustomed to their ordinary thoughts about famine, affluence, and morality in general. Singer describes a situation in which nine million refugees from East Bengal are living in poverty, and it is the responsibility of the wealthy, and better-off nations to take immediate and long term action to provide for them and to end poverty overall. (Singer, 873) Through his essay, Singer envisions a new world where giving to those in need is no longer seen as charity, but rather a moral duty. He states that in the world we currently live in, it is seen as generous and partaking in a good deed when you donate money to charity, and no one is blamed for not (876). Singer proposes that excess money should be given to those in need, rather than spending it in “selfish and unnecessary” ways (876).
In the essay “Spare Change”, the author, Teresa Zsuaffa, illustrates how the wealthy don’t treat people facing poverty with kindness and generosity, but in turn pass demeaning glares and degrading gestures, when not busy avoiding eye contact. She does so by writing an emotional experience, using imagery and personification whenever possible to get to the reader’s heart. Quite similarly, Nick Saul writes, in the essay “The Hunger Game”, about how the wealthy and people of social and political power such as “[the community’s] elected representatives” (Saul, 2013, p. 357) leave the problem of hunger on the shoulders of the foodbanks because they believe “feeding the hungry is already checked off [the government’s] collective to-do list” (Saul,
Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are limited to a small part of society and certain areas of the country, but the reality is much different. In many ways, America is the...
Most people feel that they should help the needy in some way or another. The problem is how to help them. This problem generally arises when there is a person sitting on the side of the road in battered clothes with a cardboard sign asking for some form of help, almost always in the form of money. Yet something makes the giver uneasy. What will they do with this money? Do they need this money? Will it really help them? The truth of the matter is, it won't. However, there are things that can be done to help the needy. Giving money to a reliable foundation will help the helpless, something that transferring money from a pocket to a man's tin can will never do.
Have you ever thought about what it's like not have food? I am sure that most people don't have to worry about being hungry everyday, but there are people out there who do. There are over one in four people hungry or at serious risk of being hunger—significantly worse than the nation as a whole. It hurts to think about people who don't make it through the night because of not having any food. According to the Oxford English Dictionary hunger is “the uneasy or painful sensation caused by the want of food; craving appetite. There are so many ways that Solano county hunger can be eliminated. Together, we could raise money, start food drives, and even teach those counties who are in need of food, how to grow different food. There are many people who are dying every minute from starvation, but by raising awareness,
Do you know what it is like to suffer from hunger? Do you know how it feels to know that the meal you are eating today might be your last meal for about a week? Hunger is defined in the dictionary as "the painful sensation or state of weakness caused by the need of food" Hunger is not easy and it is certainly not right to watch another starve when you know you can help. Peter singer dig deep to how the world can help people suffering and dying because of hunger, shelter, and medical need. Watching hunger develop is absurd especially when others have so much that they are throwing it away and not being considerate to the ones that are suffering. Many others from outside countries can do something about it with just little from everybody. Singer
One such approach is taken by Food Not Bombs (FNB). Food Not Bombs was first formed in Massachusetts in the 1980’s by anti-nuclear activists and has since rapidly spread across the globe. Using food that would otherwise be thrown away, the organization serves free vegetarian meals in public spaces to the homeless, poor and anyone else in need. What differentiates Food Not bombs from other charities that address hunger is that it is not defined solely as an organization, but also as a social movement with a political identity. This duality is evident in its very name whic...
The most common method that has been applied to reduce child hunger is through food donation. There are in fact many charity and organizations are providing channels for people to donate food and money to children who suffered from severe hunger and insufficient nutrition. For instance, the global organization, Food Bank, collects excessive food and grocery products from various sources, and distributes it to impoverished families and individuals (Schneider, 756). The main purpose of this plan is to reduce the wastage of food by donating it to people in need. By doing so, both parties are benefitted from each other. The accumulation of all these food can in fact make a huge impact on easing child hunger, especially to the underdeveloped countries. Feeding America, another large domestic organization, which networks more than 200 food banks to coordinates the distribution of edible food and grocery products. With the help of 61,000 agencies, three billion pounds of food were
In the past ten years the world population exceeded six billion people with most of the growth occurring in the poorest, least developed countries in the world. The rapidly increasing population and the quickly declining amount of land are relative and the rate at which hunger is increasing rises with each passing year. We cannot afford to continue to expand our world population at such an alarming rate, for already we are suffering the consequences. Hunger has been a problem for our world for thousands of years. But now that we have the technology and knowledge to stamp it out, time is running short.
In this world there are many different types of challenges faced but individuals in different countries, as people work together to find a way to stop or solve these challenges there are also some challenges or situations that individuals, even as a group, cannot eliminate. The race to reach conclusions of situations is very desirable and is being worked on very efficiently, but one issue that people have mistaken into accomplishing is hunger. Hungry is present everywhere and not a lot of people can satisfy or fulfil that need. Lack of sanitation, unemployment, and unhealthy diet choices these are involved in an imaginary line called the poverty line. The idea of food banks is a good start into eliminating hungry but the process still has a
...eason for it, ways in which you can help end world hunger, and how people as well as you can benefit from choosing to help donate or volunteer to end hunger. Hunger is the most pressing issue we face. One out of every eight people in the world today suffers from chronic undernourishment caused by food scarcity. 19,000 kids die everyday from hunger. The world has more than 1.5 times enough food to feed everyone on this entire planet although with some people making less than two dollars an hour, it is hardly imaginable to be able to. At least the number of people who die everyday of famine is going down every year because more and more people care. We want to keep this number going down not only by the year, but also by the day. If we want this to happen, we have to take action. Now.
This video has definitely opened my eyes to the problem of worldwide hunger. I have never stopped to think about the fact that hunger problems result more from a lack of access to food, rather than the lack of food itself. It’s hard for me to comprehend that a child is lost to hunger every 10 seconds. Many children are also sustaining permanent impairments due to malnourishment at an early age. I feel that the issue of hunger should be brought to the forefront as a problem that can be corrected. There is ample technology and transportation available in the world to allow people adequate access to existing food supplies.
In their article “Sustainable Development in the Globalized World,” Olsson, Hourcade, and Kohler define sustainable development using four principles. First, modern science and technology are utilized in an effective and ecological manner. Second, externalities must be internalized in order for the market to be sustainable. Third, private organizations should be socially responsible and take initiative without the government. Last, members of social movements need to take an active part in development. These four factors combine concerns regarding peace, justice, development, and the earth into the single category (Olsson, Hourcade, and Kohler). These concerns are all important in the movement to effectively reduce hunger in Ethiopia; therefore, sustainable development is key to food
