This video has definitely opened my eyes to the problem of worldwide hunger. I have never stopped to think about the fact that hunger problems result more from a lack of access to food, rather than the lack of food itself. It’s hard for me to comprehend that a child is lost to hunger every 10 seconds. Many children are also sustaining permanent impairments due to malnourishment at an early age. I feel that the issue of hunger should be brought to the forefront as a problem that can be corrected. There is ample technology and transportation available in the world to allow people adequate access to existing food supplies.

As the world population grows so does the amount of people that live without the proper amount of nutrition and food. Hunger in America can be hard to recognize and many people do not realize that hunger and malnutrition is a problem that many Americans face every day. America is the land of plenty and one of the most powerful and wealthy countries in the world, however is well known that is subject to problem such as starvation, considered as “third-world problem”. For decades, Americans have gone above and beyond to aid other countries that were faced with problems such as malnutrition and hunger. Sadly, the US has failed to aid them and millions are currently suffering from hunger. In addition, with how the economy is now, the effects of hunger are getting worse every day. Many Americans are relying and most of them depend on food stamps and private organizations to help with this crisis. The documentary, “A Place at the Table” by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush present some issues and real life story to explain what is really happening and how hunger and obesity are not problems on opposite ends of a spectrum, but are in fact intricately linked. Poor nutrition, health problem and poverty are all related.
Hunger is a very important issue in the United States. The film “Place at the table” addresses to this problem through the stories of American people and families who have to face the struggle with hunger on the daily basis. It is hard to believe that such a prosperous country like United States has such an issue, but the statistics provided by U.S. Department of Agriculture tells us the horrifying truth that one in every six Americans does not have enough food to eat. That is approximately fifty million people. The government and majority of US people are in denial of this problem, because they are simply ashamed to acknowledge it. Hunger can be next door in your neighborhood, but nobody knows about it, because people afraid to talk about it.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in the years 2010-2012. Ellen Gustafson has spoken in ted talks on the issue of Obesity plus Hunger equals one global food issue. One the main issues Gustafson speaks of is world hunger and how to end it. She also speaks briefly on obesity and how in comes into play with world hunger. Even though some people would argue that there just is not enough food in the world, world hunger and obesity can easily be prevented and eliminated with proper knowledge and programs.
Child hunger has been prevalent in the United States for many years. As of 2012, over fifteen millions children live in food insecure households. For my paper I will examine Child Hunger as a social problem, the effects of the problem, solutions, and barriers that have hindered the solutions used for this problem.
Muhammad Yunus, a civil society leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, once said, “Once poverty is gone, we’ll need to build museums to display its horrors to future generations. They’ll wonder why poverty continued so long in human society — how a few people could live in luxury while billions dwelt in misery, deprivation and despair.” Hunger can be defined as the physical state of desiring food. Hunger may ultimately lead to malnutrition, where one is unable to eat sufficiently enough to meet basic nutritional needs. According to the World Food Programme (2014), hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to health worldwide — even greater than the combination of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. There are over 842 million undernourished people who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition worldwide, everyday. That means that one in eight people do not receive enough food to be healthy and lead active lives (World Food Programme, 2014). Fortunately, hunger and malnutrition are easily solvable, though everyone must work together to permanently bring an end to it.
On November 11, 2017, at approximately 0808 hours, I responded to McDonald’s, located at 150 Hickman Drive, Sanford Seminole County in reference to a lewd and lascivious incident. Upon arrival, I made contact with victim Luis Alfaro and his father Hernan Alfaro, who provided me with a sworn written statement. Hernan verbally stated, his son Luis went to McDonald’s to use the restroom and was inside longer than normal at which time he entered the establishment to check on his son. Hernan continued to state, once he departed the restaurant and began to drive away he noticed Luis tearing. According to Hernan, the Luis disclosed to him, someone with a camouflage cell phone was taking pictures or recording him as he utilized the restroom.
What do you think about when someone says world hunger? When we look at the words, world hunger, we see more than just a problem, we see a major issue for the world as a whole. The Word hunger, is derived from three terms. Webster mainly defines hunger as, "The uneasy or painful sensation caused by the want or craving for food." This being said we see hunger in the USA as a small ordeal. When our belly rumble we tend to go to a vending machine, or McDonalds, or our favorite eating diner. However, world hunger is a big issue, where there is no simply trip to a vending machine or McDonalds solutions. Not only does world hunger affect a large amount of the world and the children, but there are even more cases where this hunger can lead to many dangerous things such as death.
The most common method that has been applied to reduce child hunger is through food donation. There are in fact many charity and organizations are providing channels for people to donate food and money to children who suffered from severe hunger and insufficient nutrition. For instance, the global organization, Food Bank, collects excessive food and grocery products from various sources, and distributes it to impoverished families and individuals (Schneider, 756). The main purpose of this plan is to reduce the wastage of food by donating it to people in need. By doing so, both parties are benefitted from each other. The accumulation of all these food can in fact make a huge impact on easing child hunger, especially to the underdeveloped countries. In the past ten years the world population exceeded six billion people with most of the growth occurring in the poorest, least developed countries in the world. The rapidly increasing population and the quickly declining amount of land are relative and the rate at which hunger is increasing rises with each passing year. We cannot afford to continue to expand our world population at such an alarming rate, for already we are suffering the consequences. Hunger has been a problem for our world for thousands of years. But now that we have the technology and knowledge to stamp it out, time is running short.
In this world there are many different types of challenges faced but individuals in different countries, as people work together to find a way to stop or solve these challenges there are also some challenges or situations that individuals, even as a group, cannot eliminate. The race to reach conclusions of situations is very desirable and is being worked on very efficiently, but one issue that people have mistaken into accomplishing is hunger. Hunger is the most pressing issue we face. One out of every eight people in the world today suffers from chronic undernourishment caused by food scarcity. 19,000 kids die everyday from hunger. The world has more than 1.5 times enough food to feed everyone on this entire planet although with some people making less than two dollars an hour, it is hardly imaginable to be able to. At least the number of people who die everyday of famine is going down every year because more and more people care. We want to keep this number going down not only by the year, but also by the day. If we want this to happen, we have to take action. Now.
Eliminating world hunger is an obtainable goal if a few small steps are put into place, with the focus being on growing more food. There are many options that should be utilized in the effort to end world hunger. If under developed countries were taught how to farm their own food and given even minimal supplies and tools it would eliminate a large percentage of the hunger complication. Education is another important dilemma that relates directly to under nourished countries such as Asia and Africa. In the United States there are many government sources for women and children to assist with food sources such as WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
