a) Write a short synopsis ( 5 marks ) SYNOPSIS OF HUNGER GAMES
The hunger games are a series of three adventure novels written by Suzanne Collins, American Author. The novels in the trilogy are titled the Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009) and Mockingjay (2010).
The trilogy’s narrator and protagonist, Katniss Everdeen lives in district 12, the poorer region of Panem, formerly known as Appalachia, where people regularly die of starvation. The hunger games trilogy takes place in an unspecified future time in a dystopian post-apocalyptic nation of Panem, in the ruins of North America (L.McShane, 2010). As a result, The Capitol continues to be wealthy and prosperous while the districts endure great poverty and hardship (L.McShane, 2010). ii. THE INEQUALITY BETWEEN RICH AND POOR
The prosperous Capitol uses its power to exploit the surrounding districts. These districts see little reward for their hard work and continue to live in poverty despite producing most of the country’s food and resources. The hunger games create strong contrast between the prosperity of the Capitol and the poverty of its surrounding districts (Ross, 2008).
It can see in the tesserae system and the way tributes are chosen for the games. In theory, the lottery by which tributes are selected called the reaping is random and anyone can be picked. But in reality, the poor are much more likely than the rich to end up as tributes. In exchange for extra rations of food and oil, called tesserae, those children that qualified for the hunger games can enter their names into the reaping additional times. Most children of poor families have to take tesserae to survive (Collins, 2010).
