He makes a remark about the guests he invited so graciously to the party that can be perceived as the thought that El Patron doesn't care to make friends in his life, he want to force people to be around him due to the fact that he is lonely. He has all the money in the world and at the party, it seems no one can give a gift El Patron hasn't received or bought himself. The second quote occur when Celia explains to Matt about El Patron. She tells him about how he's kept people close even though he's hated them so much through his power from fear and money. He can't let anything go because one, he wants to be an equivalent of god, and two because he's lost many people around, he doesn't want to lose any more. Even if he hates them. The two quotes above to keep interpreted as El Patron turning to money and power to force people around him so he isn't sp lonely. He can't keep other people around due to his paranoia but because he's human, he can't stand being alone. The context above can support the idea that the authors message in "The House of the Scorpion ", was to explain, extending your life at the cost of others, will only lessen the quality of your life.
