The cake we know today is not the same as it was in the 17th Century. As the year’s progressed bakers and chefs alike began changing the way a cake was made. The recipe of a simple vanilla cake became in essence the building block for the other types of cakes. The basic cake recipe is like the trunk and roots of a tree while the other flavors and types of cake are the branches and the leaves. Changes have not only been made to the recipe of a cake but we have changed the use of it. Nowadays cakes are used to celebrate a birthday, a wedding, and sometimes used just as a treat for people to indulge. In today’s world people don’t have the patience of tenacity to make a cake from scratch so they turn to easy ways of baking such as buying Betty Crocker cake mix; although it is convenient making a cake from scratch will always have a richer taste.
Making a cake from scratch is no easy task for a beginner. As Fannie Merritt Farmer states in her cook book “The mixing and baking of a cake requires more care and judgment than any other branch of cookery; notwithstanding it seems the one most frequently attempted by the inexperienced.”(Farmer 497). Her cook book has been around since 1912 and her book is used in cooking schools around the world. Becoming a pastry chef is no easy task but with years of experience and the knowledge gained from school and working at different bakeries, cakes becomes so familiar it’s like knowing it exactly like the back of your hand. It wasn’t until 1947 when Betty Crocker brand created and come out with convenient and inexpensive dry mixes to make baking easy. The basic premise of this southern restaurant, devoted to “pancake’s crispier cousin,” was simple southern cooking and keeping overhead low (Hoovers, 2005). The restaurant chain embodies the spirit and culture of the1950s from the simple cash only payment policies down to the jukebox full of old time favorites found within every restaurant. The chain has altered its decorum and menu offerings minimally since it first opened in 1955. Waffle House has gained its fame for being open twenty-four hours a day and three hundred sixty- five days a year, regardless of bad weather or national holidays.
For my summer reading assignment I chose to read the book “Cake Pop Crush” by Suzanne Nelson. I selected this book, because when I read the analogy of the book it really got my attention. It sounded like a competitive, romance, and eye catching type of book mixed in one. While reading the book I constantly was wanting to know what was going to happen next.

I was flipping through the “Food” section of the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday, November 5th, 2003, and came across an enormous picture of a potsticker. The article about “Potstickers” caught my attention. I thought, so what? Is there really a history behind the famous dumpling? Surprisingly, yes. The article began with an introduction of how Amy Tan, the famous author of The Joy Luck Club, makes potstickers with her sisters in remembrance of their mother. They gradually linked into the history of the potsticker with a legend that many culinary chefs know today: A chef to a royal household left a pot of dumplings on the stove too long and discovered the bottoms had burned. The chef thought this would mean his head, but his smart son decided to present the dumplings to the emperor himself. When the emperor asked why the dumplings were burned, the son quickly explained it was a new recipe for something called potstickers. The emperor liked the crunchiness of the browned bottoms and a new dish was born.
History shows the King Cake has its roots in Christianity; however, it can be traced back further to a particular ancient pagan Roman festival known as Saturnalia. Held within the Roman empire, Saturnalia was an ancient festival to honor Saturn, an agricultural deity who was said to have reigned over the world in the Golden Age. In those times, fava beans were thought to contain magic. Cakes were made to celebrate the harvest and, a “king of the day” would be chosen by using a fava bean hidden within a galette.

Although I have grown up to be entirely inept at the art of cooking, as to make even the most wretched chef ridicule my sad baking attempts, my childhood would have indicated otherwise; I was always on the countertop next to my mother’s cooking bowl, adding and mixing ingredients that would doubtlessly create a delicious food. When I was younger, cooking came intrinsically with the holiday season, which made that time of year the prime occasion for me to unite with ounces and ounces of satin dark chocolate, various other messy and gooey ingredients, numerous cooking utensils, and the assistance of my mother to cook what would soon be an edible masterpiece. The most memorable of the holiday works of art were our Chocolate Crinkle Cookies, which my mother and I first made when I was about six and are now made annually.

I was shocked to taste the difference in the snack offered on board from that served by Kenya airways. I ate a strawberry cake with soft layers too sweet for me to finish.
