My first flight “Jesse wake up its time to go!” my aunt whispered. It was about 2:45 A.M and I was half awake. The day had finally come, the long awaited trip was yet to be made. It was going to be a trip that would make history in my family, it was one that we could not have afforded had it been our plan. But I had been blessed to be nominated as one of the four students to represent my country Rwanda in the 2008 international mathematics competition held in Chiang mai Thailand. What made my flight special was that it had been delayed for four days because the space availed would not accommodate the twenty three delegates of which I was included. Besides, I was on a mission to compete on behalf of Rwanda, my country, my family counted on me to return home with a prize. It would be my first flight. We reached Kigali international airport in fifteen minutes and it was still dark, around 3:30. My dad had borrowed the car from his employer to make sure we arrived on time. I was so excited and confused by the way events seemed to be a dream. I bid my …show more content…
I was shocked to taste the difference in the snack offered on board from that served by Kenya airways. I ate a strawberry cake with soft layers too sweet for me to finish. I had been accustomed to eating rice, beans, meat, salads, French fries, but this meal was quite unfamiliar to me. But I had to adopt and at least try something new. After a few bites, I got to appreciate the work of a skilled Thai baker. Each layer gave me a different digestive experience, from strawberry to orange flavors, all combined in one piece of cake. By the time we neared our final destination, I had become well acquainted with the Thai cake, though the rest of the food took me time to adjust to since it had been cooked with sugar and spices- which was my first time to eat rice, meat, spaghetti prepared with sugar instead of
I was born in Guatemala in a city called, called Guatemala City. Life in Guatemala is hard which is why my parents brought me into the United States when I was eight months old. Some of the things that makes life in Guatemala hard is the violence. However, Guatemala has plenty of hard working men, women, and children who usually get forced to begin working as soon as they are able to walk. However, unlike many other countries, Guatemala has a huge crime rate. I care about the innocent hard working people that live in Guatemala and receive letters, threatening to be killed if they do not pay a certain amount of money at a certain amount of time.
The weather that day wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. It was gloomy and it would drizzle once in a while. I enjoyed the drive up to LA, even with a little rain. It took us about an hour and 50mins. We left around 1:00 pm and arrived around 2:50pm. The good thing about the drive was that we didn’t get lost. The only bad part was the traffic. We both expected to get traffic but not as bad.
Colonial rule in Rwanda began in 1895. It was used as the primary force for governing during that time and led to the emergence of Rwanda’s national identity. During the colonial era German and Belgian officials regarded the Tutsi, Hutu, and Twa as three distinct national groups. The colonial authorities helped the Rwandan monarchy to centralize its control and expand their social system throughout the Rwandan territory. This eliminated the local social and political variations that had been established earlier in the pre-colonial period. By creating new state institutions in Rwanda, colonial officials were able to import the ideas of nationality associated with the modern nation-state. Ensuing social and political issues surround the idea of how Rwandan nationality should be defined. In other words, which ethnic groups should be considered “true” citizens of Rwanda? This concern is overshadowing the validity of Rwandan as a national identity.
Vacations aren't always perfect there is always something that goes wrong. At least in my experiences. A perfect vacation to me is when we are all together as a family, which honestly doesn't happen that much. Having a 20 year old brother an 18 year old in post secondary school can make things complicated. Or having a vacation with no,ILLNESS, which can be very, very hard to do!! And I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this on a vacation!
Paradis finished calling the names and I was ushered off stage by Mrs. Nagri, the very math teacher with whom I had been working with for months. I was no longer recognized as a smart child who had participated in a demanding contest, rather, I was regarded as a child who did not have the mathematical capability that our school looked for in its children. As I watched from the side, the other students received awards, the best of which was a gold medal and trophy for my neighbor Shrey Patel, who had placed first in the competition within our school. All the kids remaining on stage had also qualified for the national event - an achievement which no one was going to forget for a long time. I watched my parents silently walk out of the gym, heads hung down, and I knew that they had higher hopes for me walking into the
“Sure we will take three bags of peanuts” said my mom to the nice flight attendant. My family and I were on a tiny airplane when I was just a baby. As I have been told, I have always been very good on long trips. However something about this tiny plane did not settle well with me and a series of events happened. My family and I were flying to Yellowstone National Park for a family reunion. We were flying from New York City to Jackson Hole WY. As I said this was a tiny, boarder line old plane, so that meant that if I were to cry the whole plane could hear. Now this was not my first plane ride as a baby, however this was especially an unforgettable flight. As you can imagine that was a long flight for a baby. During the decent down to Jackson
Life can have many ups and downs. One positive thing that has happened to me is being able to go on Mission Trips with my local youth group. I have been on a total of four mission trips in my life. Each one I go on opens my eyes to God. It brings people together and allows everyone to go and help the communities out. The mission trips are filled with teenagers from all over Missouri, that go all over America to help out. All the mission trips are put together by the CCYM (Conference Council on Youth Ministries.)
I had never seen such affection and care as I did from my family. After all the goodbyes, we made our way into the airport. I held on tight to my rolling suitcase as I walked to my future and I will never forget the love and support that stood there weeping. After waiting in the airport for over two hours, the plane finally arrived. I was sitting in my airplane seat slowly anticipating to see my mom that I hadn’t seen for six years. I remember the first day that I came to America. Getting out of that airplane exhausted and not being able t o walk because I had been sitting in the plane for 24 hours. I was in the Phoenix airport, looking around nervously in a peculiar place filled with strange people. But, the moment I saw my Mom and my family, I was serene once again.
Between the months of April and July in 1994 approximately one million people were killed in Rwanda. There are three ethnic groups in Rwanda, Hutu, Tutsi, and Aboriginal Twa. The genocide occurred between two different groups, the Hutu and Tutsi people. The Hutu composed close to 85% of the population while the minority Tutsi people make up approximately 14% with the Twa people composing the remaining 1%. The Republic of Rwanda like most African nations has a history of colonization from different European countries with different and conflicting ideas of governance and how a colony should be developed and used. It can be argued that many of the problems occurring in all African nations stem from previous colonization and subsequent exploitation. “ A Brief history” UN.org n.p. n.d. Web. 16 April 2014.
Throughout history the region of Africa, presently known as Rwanda has seen a major rivalry and political instability. From the early 14th century to the 20th century the Hutu’s and the Tutsi’s were foraged into the perfect ingredients for a ticking time bomb. The political structures set up along the way by the earliest settlers and the German and Belgian colonists ultimately lead to a divide and hatred between the two groups. This hatred built up and eventually caused a massive genocide. This genocide could have been prevented if the political structures didn’t bring on favoritism and political divide.

It was close to four o’clock in the morning and we were tired. We met up with my dad at the airport and grab us a taxi. As we leave, we drive by a desert that was completely surrounded with sand. Passing through we made it into the city, looking at the flashing lights and buildings that stood tall. It was too early to go out and explore, we needed our rest. As we walk into our hotel, it was like walking into an expensive apartment. With its very own kitchen, washer and dryer, and a patio to top it all
After we got off the airplane, we rented a car and drove to my Uncle Joe?s house. We finally got there and then we all went out to eat dinner. We went to some Italian restraunt and boy was it good. To this day, I have never tasted anything as good as the Veal Picata I had that day. I ate so much that I could hardly move and once I got back to my uncle?s, I just passed out and went to bed. I had a big and exciting day ahead of me. I was going to Universal Studios and I couldn?t wait.
