Greek Cuisine”
There are many things that when combined, make up what we call the Greek cuisine. The mysterious Minoans were among the first residents in Greece and they arrived in 2700 B.C bringing along with them, domesticated grains, sheep, and goats. The Minoans adopted almonds, the nuts of the mastic bush, and the yellow pulses that were being refined by more ancient peoples already in Greece, while finding wild grapes. The wild grapes were used to make wine. The people of Greece also found a bitter berry which they began to cure and press which turned out to be an olive, with its liquid lucre and olive oil basically was their economic foundation of their civilization. The Greeks invented bread. They developed wine like no there did before, they refined fruit and nut trees, goats, sheep, cows, and they raised poultry like chickens and swans. They grew a lot of vegetables and greens. Fish became an important part of their diet, they enhanced dishes using oregano and sage and they invented games of strength and expertise for which victorious athletes won “trophy” which in modern and ancient Greek it means food.
The Greeks brought their culinary alterations to the provinces into which their culture grew and we now call: Italy, France, Spain, the Levant, North Africa, and India. In 146 B.C the Romans took over them. Romans made the thin phyllo pastry dough used to make Spanakopita and sweetened pies. Then the Ottoman conquerors brought in things like rice pilaf. In the 1800’s, exotic fare came from the New World. Things like tomatoes, squash, potatoes, and beans were given a Greek tone. The ancient Greeks did not contribute in religion so much as the Hebrews did, their contributions were more towards writings and art, great epic poems, and democracy. Some of the greatest philosophers came from Greece, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. Homer, also Greek, wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey, two of the greatest works of all time, and also some of the more accurate records we have of life in that period of time. The government of Athens became the basis for many of the governments of society today. Their idea of a government run by the people was revolutionary and quite effective; their democracy was unique in its time. The Greeks also gave us the Phoenician writing system; they also had a polytheistic religion, sacrificing things to different Gods to gain the favor, respect or merely to please that particular God. The main contribution of the Greeks was their writings, and their philosophy to modern times. The Greeks also were responsible for building a library to hold some of their greatest works in Egypt, one of the first of its kind.
In the Ancient Greek society, agriculture was something to be praised and admired, and was an integral part of Ancient Greek culture. Agriculture had been the foundation of the ancient Greek economy and an activity that most of the population was involved in. In his books Odyssey and Iliad, Homer defines the model of Greek agricultural culture.

During this time, Greece saw major advances in just about every aspect of a modern society. They grew by leaps and bounds socially, economically, and technologically; among many other areas as well. All of these attributes made Greece the main hub of activity in the Mediterranean throughout this time period. During their time of power Greece saw three main civilizations rise within their social society. The Myceneans or Minoans are considered the first.
The Greek Americans have a history of existence dating back to the 6000 BC. The period between 1880 to 1910 had a lot of significant effect on the art elements in the American history; the elements and artifacts used during this period have extensive descriptions of the culture and general way of lives of these countrymen on the American continent. The various stereotypes and social order of communities differ from one geographical region to another including the native languages, perception of different elements in social activities. Styles of dressing, cooking, initiation programs and stages are all items that the Greek Americans just like any other community from the early days had core values
It is always important to look to the past in order to move towards the future. This was done in the formation of Western Society, and more specifically the formation of American society. The Greek culture served as a frame of reference for many aspects of Western life including government, architecture, math and the arts. Ancient Greek culture served as a very broad base for our society to be built upon.
In Ancient Greece they use many of their geography to help them be the civilization that they wanted to be. The mountains help them be isolated and separate from other city-state making them more independent. They use the Mediterranean Sea to provide farming to provide additional crops, but they became master sailors and developed a large trading network to be able to trade with others. The climate was always hot and dry, which sometimes affected the growth of the crops for that season.
For most of it’s history, ancient Greece was composed of small city-states, that had little economic opportunity and prosperity, and could barely sustain a functioning government. Additionally, many Greek people were not confined to one region, and were spread out all across the western world(Ionian-Greeks, Mycenaeans). In spite of this, many city-states and Greek people had a great sense of identity, pride and communality. The binding force between these unrelated city-states was the belief in Hellenic culture/Greek customs. All Greeks believed in Hellenism, and it is one of the things that defined them as Greeks. Officially titled the Hellenic Republic, Greece is a country whose historical and cultural heritage continues to influence the modern world through art, philosophy and politics. Greece is located in southern europe. Critically placed at the byroads of Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. Greece shares land borders with four countries: Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and the Republic of Macedonia. The country is greatly consumed by water to the south with over 1,400 islands, the largest of them being Crete. Over eighty percent of Greece is of mountains, the largest and most culturally significant being mount Olympus, which in Greek mythology is the resting place of the twelve olympians. Greece is a country which is filled with aesthetically pleasing landmarks which have existed for thousands of years and are deemed historically significant. These include, but are not limited to the Parthenon, Acropolis of Athens, Panathenaic stadium, Mount Athos, Sounion (where the temple of Poseidon lays), Temple of Hephaestus and Theatre of Dionysus. These are just a few of the influential landmarks this authentic country possesses.
As previously mentioned, food was traditionally considered as a mere means of subsistence, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries. The early history of food involved its use to define shared identities and reflected religious and group customs. Furthermore, food was filled with psychological, cultural, religious, and emotional significance. During this period, a unique court tradition of cuisine and sophisticated table manners emerged to distinguish the social elite from the ordinary people. However, during the 19th century, the history of food slightly changed as it became a defining symbol of national identity. The things that were unlike about the Greek culture compared to others could start with their idea that theft was ok if it was something they desired. During the time the Roman Empire controlled many territories and provinces. Italy was among theses territories, and during which time its people generated one of the greatest cuisines in the world.
