In the novel , The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby is shown loving Daisy throughout the novel, but is it real? Gatsby thinks he is loving Daisy, but it might just be her filling in a hole in his life. Gatsby’s actions and characteristics make it seem like he cannot actually love Daisy. He is too bent on the past Daisy rather than focusing on the Daisy in front of him. Gatsby says it is love that is shown for Daisy, but it is also obsession and her filling in a piece of his dream. Gatsby is a very loving and caring character in the book. This is shown by his love for Daisy. The love Gatsby shows is young love. Gatsby is stuck in the past where he loved Daisy without doubts or worries. Gatsby thinks since the love he remembers is in the past
Not only are those shown but Gatsby also shows he wants Daisy to fill a spot in his dream. He has all the items he could ever possibly want in his life but he’s missing just one thing, the girl of his dreams. He goes out every night to stretch his arms towards the symbolic green light. The green light shows that the girl of his dreams is a stretch of the arm away, but still so far away. “Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her.” (pg 93) Gatsby wants Daisy to save she loves him and will come back into his life and fill that hole. Fitzgerald's message is that Gatsby cannot love again. Gatsby had that chance long ago but it was taken from him. All Gatsby wants is to love and become obsessed with Daisy and for her to fill in his dream. Gatsby cannot fulfill that dream, he is too deep in that dream he thinks she is also in the past with him.
