The Great Gatsby: Lost Love
The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a tragic love story
of lost love. Gatsby, the main character, based his love for Daisy on a
young girl he met before going off to war. In their time apart, Gatsby
strived to build the American dream while Daisy enjoyed the riches by those
who adored her. The character Daisy is described by Fitzgerald throughout
the novel as flighty and shallow. It is their difference in character and
devotion that sets them apart. Gatsby eventually realized Daisy could not
measure up to what he had envisioned as his perfect love.
As a young officer, Gatsby was impressed by what Daisy represented, old
money and a life full of luxuries. He fell deeply in love with the young
Daisy, and vowed to come back to her a wealthy man. While Gatsby went off
to the war Daisy continued in her artificial life. In Gatsby's case,
distance made his heart grow fonder. It was evident that Gatsby followed
Daisy's activities when he showed her the clippings on their first meeting.
"Look at this," said Gatsby quickly. "Here is a lot of clippings -about
you."(90) He knew what he needed to do to get Daisy back, even if it meant
making his money by illegal means. Daisy grew tired of pining for her
officer and soon her love was bought by a new suitor, Tom Buchanan, with a
$30,000 pearl necklace. Money was what Daisy desired.
James Gatz, was a poor farm boy who saw his life as living in poverty. He
knew he wanted more and worked hard to improve his life. Daisy grew tired of
waiting for him in their early relationship because other rich officers
pursued her. When they met again she was impressed with his wealth. His
dream for a better life gave him a sense of purpose. Daisy's purpose in life
were material comforts and luxuries. Daisy's empty existence and the people
she surrounded herself with was in contrast with Gatsby's dreams, which gave
meaning to his own identity. Nick shows this when he says to Gatsby,
"They're a rotten crowd," I shouted across the lawn. "Your worth the whole
damn bunch put together." (146)
Gatsby's obsession for Daisy blinded him of what her true character was.
Gatsby loved the Daisy of the past. Daisy was a very shallow and
materialistic person who was only attracted to the wealth of an individual
As a young man, Jay Gatsby was poor with nothing but his love for Daisy. He had attempted to woe her, but a stronger attraction to money led her to marry another man. This did not stop Gatsby’s goal of winning this woman for himself though, and he decided to improve his life anyway he could until he could measure up to Daisy’s standards. He eventually gained connections in what would seem to be the wrong places, but these gave him the opportunity he needed to "get rich quick." Gatsby’s enormous desire for Daisy controlled his life to the point that he did not even question the immorality of the dealings that he involved himself in to acquire wealth. Eventually though, he was able to afford a "castle" in a location where he could pursue Daisy effectively. His life ambition had successfully moved him to the top of the "new money" class of society, but he lacked the education of how to promote his wealth properly. Despite the way that Gatsby flaunted his money, he did catch Daisy’s attention. A chaotic affair followed for a while until Daisy was overcome by pressures from Gatsby to leave her husband and by the realization that she belonged to "old money" and a more proper society.
The concept of childbirth being epistemically transformative raises a few questions: is childbirth unique in being epistemically transformative, and can we ever know the expected value of an epistemically transformative decision? I answer no to the former and yes to the latter, and will explain my answer as follows. Firstly, I will lay out Paul’s argument and add further reasons to support said arguments that I think she doesn’t really explore. Secondly, I argue that most people don’t make decisions based solely on phenomenal factors, and that even if they do make decisions based solely on phenomenal factors, such decisions can be rational. Lastly, I contend that Paul’s argument runs the risk of over-claiming, and that it does not matter if our decisions, especially the decision to have a child, cannot be rational.
Europeans were extremely naïve when it came to “ANYONE exotic enough to startle a European” based off the differences “in terms of culture, religion, ‘color’ etc.” They thought that most Moors were from the African or Ethiopian decent, believing that they were uneducated and uncivilized. The Europeans failed to distinguish between the “Moors [who] were natives of Morocco,” and were “mainly Arabic and Berber, settled in North America, invaded Spain in the 8th century and were driven out in the 15t...
Themes of hope, success, and wealth overpower The Great Gatsby, leaving the reader with a new way to look at the roaring twenties, showing that not everything was good in this era. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates the characters in this book to live and recreate past memories and relationships. This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.
Body piercing has been around for thousands of years. People used to have body piercings for idol worship. For instance, in the Bible, Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, told all the people to cast off all of their body piercing jewelry because it was displeasing to God. He said that people were making a temple of their body and worshipping themselves and their bodies were for God and not themselves. Now in the twenty-first century, it is mainly used for a trendy, rebellious look. No matter what reason you are doing it for, you are probably going to feel the pain from your choice.
already loved Daisy, increased her value in his eyes"."Single green light, minute and far away"(
In the 1920's the spirit and ambition of the American people soared. Unlike their European counterparts who were trapped in the social class to which they were born, the American people knew that if they worked hard then they could rise to a higher social class. The flappers and the women's liberation movement were just two examples of how Americans expressed their newly discovered social freedom. It seemed that nothing was impossible to achieve. James Gatz, shared the spirit and ambition on the American people and fought long and hard to earn his place in the world. He had dreamed of transforming himself from the poor, young man that he was into the wealthy celebrity that he would soon become.
...ny people trusted paper currency, so the Chinese had to get a new economy system. Silver was one of the best choice.
...omething happened to [her] and [she] can’t tell [her] by [her] face” (Morrison, 72). The mark tormented Sethe throughout her life. She remembered witnessing the mass killing of slaves while heading for Sweet Home. She believed, as a child of 9 years old, that one of the burned bodies that were hanging had the mark her mother had shown her (Morrison, 73). The event stayed with Sethe and, in my opinion, caused her to associate motherhood with death.
The beginning of the Parisian opera was deeply rooted in the politics between France and Italy. Cardinal Mazarin, an Italian native, was the chief minister of France in the mid 17th century. As Louis XIV was only 5 years old when he came into power, Cardinal Mazarin and Queen Anne ruled France and Paris. They were both widely known to be involved with culture and patrons of the arts. As such, Cardinal Mazarin was a supporter of the opera and he used his influence to have Italian operas perform in Paris. Although the opera was not quick to gain the favor of the Parisians, King Louis XIV was quick to change this. Jean-Baptiste Lully had been the king’s royal musician since 1661 although he was born in Italy. King Louis XIV loved Lully’s work so when Italian attempts at popularizing the opera in Paris failed, Louis XIV asked Lully to use his music and begin creating an opera in 1671. As history will tell, the importance of the opera would be stem from countries using it as an instrument to display their cultures to everyone else and gain respect.
For starters, the Weimar Republic’s Rise and fall was bound to happen. “As World War I (WWI) drew to a close, Germany tottered on the brink of chaos. Under the threat of a socialist revolution, the Kaiser abdicated. Moderate leaders signed the armistice and later, under protest, the Versailles treaty” (Ester, 2010). In 1919, German leaders created the democratic government known as the Weimar Republic, this created by the constitution drafted in the city of Weimar. There were political struggles. Politically, the republic was weak because Germany had many small parties. “They longed for another strong leader like Bismarck” (Ester, 2010). “With help from Western power, the government did bring inflation under control. In 1924, the United States gained British and French approval for a plan to reduce German reparations payments” (Ester, 2010).
It is important to understand the natural color of teeth. Individual teeth vary in color in their thirds. The incisal third is usually the lightest because it is composed of mostly translucent enamel. The middle third is the next darkest and is closer to the color of dentin, but is modified by the translucent enamel that covers it. The cervical third in the darkest portion of the tooth because enamel in thinnest in this region, and the color of dentin is more visible. When looking at the smile as a whole, the shade of individual teeth varies between each other. The maxillary centrals are usually the lightest teeth and have a higher value. Maxill...
Soccer requires skill, physical ability, and mental strength. I was fortunate enough to have been born with a family who is passionate about soccer. My father and mother both played soccer throughout their younger lives. My father played for professional teams in Honduras and even had a chance to play for the Honduras national team until he quit soccer and took up running. I believe that my skill comes from my genes. Skill is needed to play soccer because I have seen players who have played all their lives but struggle to improve. Skill, in my opinion is the most important aspect a player needs to have because skill helps a player improve.
The Chinese were the first to produce silk from the silkworm. This was something that was very much desired by the West. The Romans even referred to it as the ‘land where silk comes from. ’ The Romans set out to find where this wonderful material was coming from. According to the Ancient History Encyclopedia it is thought that the first contact between China and the west was around 200 BCE . Many types of merchandise were traded along this road. China had things like silk, bamboo work, and Chinese lacquers. The West had many new fruits, vegetables, spices, gold, and medicinal materials that China wanted. So this was a mutually beneficial trade route. As mentioned before much more than just material things were traded among this road like ideals, beliefs, and technology.
Have you ever had the pleasure of working with an individual who was completely full of themselves? This person loved to be the center of attention and the topic of every subject, had extravagant dreams and considered themselves to be a person of many talents. This same person believed that they were a better leader than you would ever be and had no problem telling you that. He or she thought that the best way to gain the admiration of others and receive confirmation of their authority was by “talking down” to those who threaten them. The qualities that I mentioned are all common traits of a narcissist. Narcissist tend to think that they are better leaders than what they actually are according to their peers and coworkers. Proverbs 29:2 says "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn" (King James Bible Online, 2015).
