We all have dreams, but not all of us have the strength, or courage, to chase them. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the lives of three characters are affected by attempting to chase their own. There is no telling how it will turn out if you put everything on hold to go after the one thing you really want; though sometimes it is the best thing to do. Through the empty lives of three characters-George Wilson, Jay Gatsby, and Daisy Buchanan-Fitzgerald shows that chasing hollow dreams leads only to misery. First, Wilson chased the hollow dream of Myrtle’s love. He loved her through the whole story even though she did not feel the same way. He is completely unaware that his love is unrequited and that she was having an affair with Tom. Eventually, they get in a big fight and she admits that she shouldn’t have married him. She exclaims that she thought he was a gentleman but it turns out that he is the opposite. It is clear that she wants nothing to do with him when she yells “Throw me down and beat …show more content…
Gatsby chased the hollow dream of winning over Daisy. He loved her his whole life but wasn’t good enough for her when she loved him back. He then made it his life goal to get her back. He worked his life away, earning his own money since he wasn’t one to inherit it and building a new lifestyle for himself. He finally decided that he was ready to come face to face with her once again and show her what he has accomplished. They pick off where they left off and continue their love affair for a while before they came to the agreement to tell Tom and break it off with him once and for all. She said she was ready to be with Gatsby but then wouldn’t commit when the opportunity came. He wasted his whole life working to get her and it turns out she wouldn’t even leave her husband for him. Gatsby’s dream was not completely one-sided, she did love him, but Daisy wasn’t fully on board with his

Tom functions under the illusion that Daisy not only loves him now, but has always loved him and been completely devoted to him. Daisy does admit that she once loved him, but he was not her first choice; Gatsby was. Tom is also under the illusion that Daisy will never leave him. He has an ongoing, almost public affair with Myrtle but still wants to be devoted to Daisy and demands her devotion to him. Tom feels as if he will never lose anything: his money, Daisy, or his social status.
Gatsby’s true dream is made abundantly clear throughout the entire text; winning Daisy back and reigniting the flaming love they once had. Gatsby’s dream of having Daisy divides him from his power at one critical point in the text, “Then I turned back to Gatsby-and was startled by his expression. He looked-and this is said in all contempt for the babbled slander of his garden-as if he had ‘killed a man.’ For a moment the set of his face could be described in just that fantastic way” (134). As Gatsby is arguing with Tom over Daisy and whom she loves, he loses himself to his temper and emotion. He embarrasses himself and soils the image of himself that he's built up for others to see, and loses his perceived power. Gatsby also shows a lack of personal integrity, esteem, and power when he requests for Daisy to say she never loved Tom at any point in time, such as when he says, “‘Daisy, that’s all over now,’ he said earnestly. ‘It doesn’t matter any more. Just tell him the truth-that you never loved him-and it’s all wiped out forever’”
Apparently being wealthy is not all Gatsby wants, but also wants love from Daisy. He loves her so much he wants her to break Tom’s heart and come with him. This man is clever and cold hearted like Lord Voldemort and Sauron. Jordan glanced at Nick and told him in a calm tone, “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald 78). Gatsby’s way of being in love with Daisy is to be a creepy stalker, never giving her space and always spying on her.
For five years, Gatsby was denied the one thing that he desired more than anything in the world: Daisy. While she was willing to wait for him until after the war, he did not want to return to her a poor man who would, in his eyes, be unworthy of her love. Gatsby did not want to force Daisy to choose between the comfortable lifestyle she was used to and his love. Before he would return to her, he was determined to make something of himself so that Daisy would not lose the affluence that she was accustomed to possessing. His desire for Daisy made Gatsby willing to do whatever was necessary to earn the money that would in turn lead to Daisy’s love, even if it meant participating in actions...
At the climax of the fight, while arguing with Jay, Tom states ”You’re crazy!’ he exploded’ I can’t speak about what happened five years ago because I didn’t know Daisy then’[...] and she loves me now’(Fitzgerald 131).Although, Tom isn’t the one who should be talking about “relationship”, he brought up a strong valid point. Tom didn’t know Daisy that much and got married months after Gatsby left for war. Daisy didn’t want to wait for him to return and knew he was still in Europe. She wasn’t interested in Gatsby anymore, but Tom. In search for agreement, Gatsby walked over to Daisy and says” ‘ Daisy, that’s all over now,’ he said earnestly ‘It doesn’t matter anymore, just tell him the truth - that you never loved him and it all wiped out forever.’[...] ‘why how could I love him- possibly?’ ‘ You never loved him’ ”(Fitzgerald 139). Daisy won’t be able to wipe all that out of her memories. Of course, she had to loved tom at some point of their marriage. They had a child and been through so much. When the chaos was over and before Gatsby and Daisy left the room, Gatsby ”began to talk excitedly to Daisy, denying everything, defending his name against accusations that had not been made .But with every word she was drawing further and further into herself, so he gave that up and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away[...] The voice begged again to’

To survive Gatsby has to join the army and when he goes to war Daisy marries Tom, a rich stockbroker from New York, who gives Daisy a life of luxury. The problem, unbeknown to Daisy is that he is cheating on her. When Gatsby returns from battle he notices that Daisy has married a rich man and after realizing that Daisy was after Tom’s money Gatsby figures that the only way to get her back is by becoming rich himself.
