In The Grapes of Wrath the chapters go off from vignettes to regular chapters. The vignettes describe how the dust bowl and the workers migrating to California affect other people and surroundings. They also foreshadow the events of the Joads and migrant workers on their journey. In chapter 3, Steinbeck describes a turtle crossing a road and getting hit by a car. “And over the grass at the roadside a land turtle crawled…at last he started to climb the embankment…the driver saw the turtle and swerved to hit it,” (Steinbeck, 20-22). In later chapters, Steinbeck describes the turtle as he gets picked up by Tom Joad and tries to sneakily crawl away. The turtle represents the migrant workers and their journey to California through determination, hardships, and feeling out of place.

Throughout the novel, The Grapes of Wrath there are intercalary chapters. The purpose of these chapters are to give the readers insight and background on the setting, time, place and even history of the novel. They help blend the themes, symbols, motifs of the novel, such as the saving power of family and fellowship, man’s inhumanity to man, and even the multiplying effects of selfishness. These chapters show the social and economic crisis flooding the nation at the time, and the plight of the American farmer becoming difficult. The contrast between these chapters helps readers look at not just the storyline of the Joad family, but farmers during the time and also the condition of America during the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck uses these chapters to show that the story is not only limited to the Joad family,
In the novel The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, a fictitious migrant family, the Joads, travel west in search of a new life away from the tragedies of the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma. Along the way, Steinbeck adds a variety of minor characters with whom the Joads interact. Steinbeck created these minor characters to contrast with the Joad’s strong will power and to reflect man’s fear of new challenges, and to identify man’s resistance to change. Three minor characters who fulfill this role are Muley Graves, Connie Rivers, and the tractor driver.
Many times, ADHD is diagnosed by unqualified people. A parent usually receives a letter from the child’s teacher stating that he or she is exhibiting behavior problems and a meeting is scheduled. At the meeting, the parents are urged to allow faculty to assess the child. A report is then written and the parents take the child and the report to the doctor and the child is given medication, usually a stimulant, to cure the child of his or her illness.
Arriving at Lacey’s house I walk to the backdoor letting myself into the house. Lacey was putting on tanning lotion in the kitchen, “Lacey,” I called to her, “my mom wants me to pick up snacks for the beach, do you want to go into town with me?”, “Sure,” she replied, “do you mind if my cousin comes with us?”, “Of course I don’t mind,“ I answered, “but we have to get moving, my dad only left me the car to use ‘til noon.”

Recent media coverage might lead one to believe that ADHD is something new, a nineties thing, some vogue malady that somehow explains our disaffected modern youth. Yet the hyperactive child has always been around. He was class clown, the kid in the back row who never shut up. He was the kid whom the teacher constantly sent out of the room or to the office. In the past, these were the children...

Magnets have a long history in medical applications. In 18th century Europe, the use of magnets was just another type of what we now call “faith healing.” To this day, people continue to experiment with magnetic therapy. The magnetic devices that are claimed to be therapeutic include: magnetic bracelets, insoles, knee and wrist bands, back and neck braces, and even pillows and mattresses. Magnetic therapy has become so common that a Google search for “magnets and pain relief” returns over 700,000 results. Some advocates of magnetic therapy claim magnets to be a strong alternative to conventional pain medication. But are magnets a legitimate form of medicine? Besides the use of magnets in everyday life—in televisions, refrigerators and computers—magnets have acquired a medical reputation for relieving pain. Magnets are said to increase circulation to problem areas, reduce swelling and aid in recovery. As of 2007, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAM) had performed a number of preliminary scientific studies with no clear results on the efficacy of the healing powers of magnetic devices. Just as important, NCAM, continues to pronounce magnet therapy as a mystical form of relief that is very real but cannot yet be explained. Still, magnet merchants dominate internet searches. As explained by Cepeda, Carr and Sarquis, “…it is crystal clear that billions of dollars [$300 million in the U.S. alone] have already been spent on magnet therapy, or perhaps, wasted on magnet therapy. To be blunt, there is no proven benefit to magnet therapy.” This paper will examine the legitimacy of magnet therapy, the pseudoscience that acts as evidence to its supporters and the science that challenges its fac...
Once upon a time there lived a young savage named Addie. Addie could care less about anyone in her path, and lived the thug life. One day Addie woke up feeling especially savage and headed over to her local Dunkin Donuts. On the way to Dunkin Addie ran every red light, and on the way noticed squirell getting electrocuted on the powerline above. Soon enough Addie made it to Dunkin and ordered a quadruple shot espresso with a side of extra caffeinated donuts. When she was leaving the restaurant there was a two person line trying to exit the room. Instead of waiting in line, she gently put down her coffee, and socked both of the people in the mouth. After relieving herself she slowly picked up her coffee and left Dunkin. After leaving Dunkin Donuts
After walking what seemed life forever the Arsila and Chu’a sat down under a tree for a little break. “So where are headed anyway,” ask Arsila innocently. “You are not going to like it,” Chu’a replied, “but I am going to find out why they call it the forbidden forest.” “No way,” yelled Arsila, “There is no way I am going out there. It is forbidden for a reason.” “Then you can go home. I do not need you, I can brave the forest myself,” Chu’a yelled in reply. Arsila began to run home. She knew she needed to tell her mother and stop Chu’a before he could go through with his
