Courage is an attribute that someone has when they stand up for what they believe in. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie shows some acts of courage. Cassie faces some challenges and she handles them in different ways. In the novella of The Crucible by Arthur Miller vengeance is walking Salem in causing several conflicts throughout the Salem village. Many of the conflicts are due with getting back at one another with the need for revenge. “We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!” (Miller 81). This quote is trying to prove the point the proctor has a very good understanding of what is happening in how the little girls are rebelling and acting out. They are accusing several women of being witches. “Why, Abigail Williams charge her” (Miller 77). The quote is trying to show how many of the girls are calling out the wives in the Salem village.
Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the theme of courage is seen through the actions of many characters; I have also seen many examples of courage in my own life through current events, such as news stories about Aly Raisman, and courage is also seen in my personal experiences, such as the time my cousin had moved to New York. The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one or strength in the face of pain or grief. Also, Atticus says, “It’s when you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.”
Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger and pain ("Courage"). One of the major qualities emphasized by Girl Scouts, courage is one of three standards taught in the final three levels of Girl Scouts. In their ‘cadette’ year (the third of six levels), a girl is taught about self image and how to stand up for what she believes. In their cumulative award, the Bronze award, a girl finds her voice and uses it to make a difference in the community that raised and nurtured her. She can do this by designing a community walk-a-thon for charity, or by lending a hand at the local humane center. Wherever the girl decides to work, Girl Scouts encourages her to choose a field that they have a passion for.
