The book of John is found in the Bible’s New Testament, and is also considered one of the four gospels which are also found in the New Testament. The structure of John is different when compared to the structure of the other gospels (Witherup, 2014). The simplicity of John’s writings helps readers better understand what he was trying to teach (Witherup, 2014). Chapters one through twelve in the book of John were written to describe the encounters that Jesus had with certain people (Witherup, 2014). During these interactions: “…Jesus explains the mystery of salvation unfolding before their very eyes” (Witherup, 2014, p. 51). However, the history of a specific time can also include the causes and effects of these events (Bennema, 2014). The causes and effects of historical events are important to understand, especially when studying events that took place within biblical history. The events taking place during biblical history have the potential to help readers better understand the Bible and what the authors were experiencing while writing their passages.
The historical content of the gospel of John can be interpreted in different ways. The Gospel of John is much different than the other gospels found in the New Testament, and for this reason, scholars question the Gospel of John’s historical reliability (Bennema, 2014). Some scholars may even argue that the gospel of John is untrue. For example, scholar Maurice Casey believes that the gospel of John does not explain an accurate account of Jesus’ life or ministry (Benemma 2014). On the other hand, scholar Loius Ruprecht believes that John purposely: “…reinterpreted the story of Jesus’ life in order to subvert and replace Mark’s Gospel (and other Synoptics) –and his Gospel won out in later Christianity” (Bennema, 2014, p. 5). It is interesting to explore the different viewpoints that scholars have in regards to the history of the bible, and certain verses that were written.
