Comparing Utopias: The United States and The Giver

Is the United States a perfect community? With only 1 in 3 Americans claiming to be happy maybe the community in The Giver is best. Whether school, work, family, friends or drama is making someone unhappy, it is important to find a personal utopia. Meryl Davis said “I think success is finding happiness! Everyone certainly has different goals in life, and things that are important to them, and also things that are not important to them.” In The Giver everything is equal and their are no choices, while in the U.S. individuality is recognized and embraced. The US and the community in The Giver attract different people to them. Three subjects that The U.S. and The Giver have different views on are expenses, birthdays and deaths. and The Giver have very different ways of honoring the dead. In the U.S., funerals are held or ashes are spread after a death from injury, sickness or old age. In The Giver ceremonies of release are held after release. Release is death by lethal injection. The U.S. in the same way as The Giver, both honor the dead. Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy said “It has been said, 'time heals all wounds.' I do not agree. The wounds remain. In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens. But it is never gone.” Both communities agree that honoring the dead is an important step in moving on. To repeat, The U.S. holds funerals or spreads ashes while The Giver holds a ceremony of release. The U.S. and the community in The Giver attract different people to them. In The Giver with no expenses, it is a lot less stressful compared to the U.S. In the US birthdays celebrate individuals, but in The Giver birthdays celebrate another year in the community. In The U.S. dead are honored by funerals or ashes being spread however in The Giver dead are honored by a ceremony of release.
