These generalizations and stereotypes are traced in Constructing Whiteness by Teresa J. Guess and Origin of Black Body Politics. While the idea of whiteness in the United States has been socially constructed as the cultural norm, blackness (African American culture) tends to be considered inferior and savage. African Americans and their cultural innovations are often observed by white people with “the gaze.” The gaze is a surface level method of observation that “suggests…the presence of another” (Origins, 10). This allows white people to generalize practices like breakdancing as a black practice, carrying a negative connotation. UNTIL ADOPTED, APPROPRIATED, NORMALIZED. America’s history of dehumanizing the black community and the abstraction of African Americans being categorized by “The five pantheon stock characters…” (Origins, 25) have made the gaze a profoundly damaging phenomenon. In The Freshest Kids the b-boys explain how breaking has been critiqued as a dying fad, yet ballet is considered a branch of dance as an art form. The breakers realize that a dance form created in the South Bronx by African American children does not command the same respect as a more “established” European dance. Ciphers formed around a b-boy or b-girl who acted on the call and response between the other members of the cipher. Breaking in the documentary always involved a circular formation concentric where the audience becomes an observer and participant. More specifically tying into multi layered totalizing response, participants in the cypher like Crazy Legs experienced a physical and emotional communication, where everyone was focused on one performer. In the article, “A Letter My Son,” Ta-Nehisi Coates utilizes both ethical and pathetic appeal to address his audience in a personable manner. The purpose of this article is to enlighten the audience, and in particular his son, on what it looks like, feels like, and means to be encompassed in his black body through a series of personal anecdotes and self-reflection on what it means to be black. In comparison, Coates goes a step further and analyzes how a black body moves and is perceived in a world that is centered on whiteness. Black people have long struggled to define themselves in a predominantly White world. This holds especially true in the world of dance. Cleverly entitled "Simmering Passivity: The Black Male Body In Concert Dance," DeFrantz’s article chronicles the experience of Black male dancers forced to conform to unidimensional stereotypes in order to perform and capitalize amongst White crowds. Often repressing important aspects of themselves to fit into these roles, these Black dancers “simmered passively,” waiting for the opportunity to show their full abilities and true identities. DeFrantz points to the life and choreography of Alvin Ailey to support this position. Dancing during the 1950s, Ailey, like other Black male dancers, was pigeonholed as a black “brute,” considered only capable of aggressive, hyper-masculine, and animalistic styles. Abstract: Comparing the tap dancing of tap stars Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson and Savion Glover in the two Hollywood films Stormy Weather (1943) by Andrew Stone and Bamboozled (2000) by Spike Lee, calls for the analysis of each film’s historical context. There are race issues deeply embedded either in the political and social situation at the time the film was made, as is the case with Stormy Weather, or in the narrative of the film, as with Bamboozled. This article pro- poses that the markers for the evolution of tap have been closely aligned with the progress of African Americans in this country.
Hip Hop’s according to James McBride article “Hip Hop Planet” is a singular and different form of music that brings with it a message that only those who pay close attention to it understand it. Many who dislike this form of music would state that it is one “without melody, sensibility, instruments, verse, or harmony and doesn’t even seem to be music” (McBride, pg. 1). Though Hip Hop has proven why it deserves to be called music. In going into depth on its values and origins one understands why it is so popular among young people and why it has kept on evolving among the years instead of dying. Hip-hop culture has been a global phenomenon for more than twenty years. When introduced into the American culture, the black culture felt that hip-hop had originated from the African American community. The black community was being denied their cultural rights by the supremacy of the white people, but hip-hop gave the community the encouragement to show their black pride and televise the struggles they were facing in the world. The failure and declining of the movements, the influential, rebellious, and powerful music is what reshaped Black Nationalism, unity and to signify the struggle. The African Americans who suffered from social and political problems found that they similar relations to the political movements, which allowed the blacks to be able to voice their opinions and to acknowledge their culture openly.

In The Marrow of Tradition, author Charles W. Chesnutt illustrates examples that signify the thoughts that whites had of and used against blacks, which are still very much prevalent in public opinion and contemporary media. Hip hop has permeated popular culture in an unprecedented fashion. Because of its crossover appeal, it is a great unifier of diverse populations. Although created by black youth on the streets, hip hop's influence has become well received by a number of different races in this country. A large number of the rap and hip hop audience is non-black. It has gone from the fringes, to the suburbs, and into the corporate boardrooms. Because it has become the fastest growing music genre in the U.S., companies and corporate giants have used its appeal to capitalize on it. Although critics of rap music and hip hop seem to be fixated on the messages of sex, violence, and harsh language, this genre offers a new paradigm of what can be (Lewis, 1998.) The potential of this art form to mend ethnic relations is substantial. Hip hop has challenged the system in ways that have unified individuals across a rich ethnic spectrum. This art form was once considered a fad has kept going strong for more than three decades. Generations consisting of Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and Asians have grown up immersed in hip-hop. Hip hop represents a realignment of America?s cultural aesthetics. Rap songs deliver a message, again and again, to keep it real. It has influenced young people of all races to search for excitement, artistic fulfillment, and a sense of identity by exploring the black underclass (Foreman, 2002). Though it is music, many people do not realize that it is much more than that. Hip hop is a form of art and culture, style, and language, and extension of commerce, and for many, a natural means of living. The purpose of this paper is to examine hip hop and its effect on American culture. Different aspects of hip hop will also be examined to shed some light that helps readers to what hip hop actually is. In order to see hip hop as a cultural influence we need to take a look at its history.
