One thing a successful company has is a great staff filled with people in working in different areas, all doing their best to keep the business moving forward. Like an army, the staff does need a leader, or maybe a few, to make sure that everyone in the business is organized, informed and all moving toward the goal of the company. Some people may think that this person is the owner but most of the time this person is the manager. Successful managers must know, and be able to apply the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, to their daily work routine.
Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate action needed to achieve those goals (Bateman & Snell, 2007). All businesses, new and established, must have goals. Having a plan is crucial because it lets everyone know exactly which goals the company is heading for. Plans help to make sure everyone in the staff knows what specific tasks they may have to do in order for the company, as a whole, to achieve the goal. Planning activities can include, analyzing current situation, anticipating the future, determining objectives, deciding what kind of activities the company will engage, choosing business and corporate strategies, and determining the resources needed to achieve the organization’s goals (Bateman & Snell). After a plan is set for a specific goal, now the organizing of resources is the next step.

Managers must always remember that the success of the business is important because if the business fails then they fail. Practicing the four concepts of management is crucial to the success of the business as well as that of the manager. Having a plan, being organized and a good leader is important, however, unexpected things might happen and a manager must be able to take control of the situation in order to achieve the company’s goal.

There are so many things that take place when you have good management. It encourages initiative, encourages innovation, helps with growth and expansion, improves the life of workers, motivates employees and much more. Without good management there would be no success.

A great manager may not be a great leader. Great leaders must be able to communicate as well as motivate employees. “The manager administers; the leader innovates. The manager imitates; the leader initiates” (Bennis, 1994). Jon Katzenbach best described leadership “as a mind set of adaptive responsiveness” (Gale, 2002, p.2). Some will argue that leaders are born, while others will say leaders are trained. In either case, a qualified well-rounded leader must be found.

An organisation is a deliberate arrangement of team consisting different personal identities to accomplish some specific goals and managers are the ones who hold the responsibility of mastering and placing them together to strive for that purpose (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, and Coulter, 2008). Robbins et al. (2008) have stated that managers are people who coordinate and oversee the work activities of others so that the goal is accomplished effectively and efficiently. Managers usually possess qualities such as having strong communication skills, flexibility, imagination, enthusiasm, problem solving skills, and of course the desire to be a great leader (Phdinmanagement.org, 2014). The structure of management conducted by a manager is often influenced by the four functions introduced by Henri Fayol (planning, organising, leading, controlling); how Henry Mintzberg’s management roles play in the organisation and also the three essentials management skills proposed by Robert L. Katz (Robbins et al., 2008).

As Schermerhorn states in Management planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the tools needed by managers to accomplish performance goals. It is crucial that managers be able to recognize and act upon problems or opportunities as they arise. Planning is perhaps the cornerstone of the four processes. All good processes were at some point given great detail so as to anticipate possible problems and solutions to those problems. When the Honda Motor Company decided it needed to refine its inventory they didn't just jump at the first idea that was proposed; they first set their objectives and discussed ways to meet those objectives. After giving careful consideration to processes and the streamlining of those processes human error rose as the top need for change. Sounds simple you might respond; in reality it is much more complicated.
Management is not just about making decisions, watching over employees, and bossing others around. Good management result is satisfied customers, who provide better customer service. In order for new managers to be successful they need to be about to have good communication, human skills, and ability to motivate others. The ability to do these skills effectively makes a big difference in a manager and the company’s overall success. Companies depend on managers to fulfill skills and knowledge to help their company excel. The knowledge managers need to possess is technological inclined and globalization. Effective management can enhance a company’s performance by contributing to employees and customer satisfaction, productivity, development (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2010).
Organization is the function of assembling and coordinating human, financial, physical, informational and other resources needed to achieve goals. Without this function, my business would have folded in the first week. I have midlevel managers to gather together my employees, and discuss the plans for the week. Specific shoe styles must be displayed and organized in a certain order. Information must be disseminated to our marketing team so they know who we are targeting and what steps to take to increase our visibility and productivity. Organizing is not something just one person can do alone. For this function to work, it will take the entire team to pull together for us to triumphant.
