I did the food tracker and kept a 24-hour food diet. I knew that I had been eating poorly, but this really highlighted the areas I am extremely poor in and the changes I need to make. Overall, I was below in calories overall, having eaten only 1210 of my recommended 2,000 calories. I was, however, above where I needed to be in empty calories, which is pretty bad since I only ate a little over half of my recommended calories. I need t eat more calories each day, but I need to be eating more calories that are nutritious and not just empty calories. I also think I should start taking a multivitamin, since I was deficient in many areas, which a multivitamin would help with. One area my diet is very under on is Omega 3 fatty acids. During the 24-hour period I tracked, I only ate 5mg of DHA of EPA Omega 3, which is well below the 200-300 mg it should be. However, I did eat an “all you can eat” sushi buffet lunch the day before I tracked my food, and ate a lot of salmon (both cooked and raw) and tuna. I tend to eat fish throughout the week, so I am assuming that if I were to track more th...
In the article “Paranoia about Fats is Driven by Junk Science” by Jill Richardson discusses the idea of how many Americans’ have false beliefs on the consumption of fats. Many think fats are bad and unhealthy for our diets, when in reality; we need them to maintain a healthy diet. For me and just like many others, I had the wrong impression on fats. Since many products today contain the label fat-free, I always believed that this was bad for diets. Since reading this article, it helped me take into account that eating omega-3 and omega-6; such as fish, greens, seeds, and oils are part of a well-balanced diet. This can be related to chapter 3, as omega-3 fatty acids are essential in preventing
The purpose of this report is to explore the controversial dispute between the quality of two different forms of fish oil supplementation; Triglyceride (TG) and Ethyl Ester (EE). Fish oil can be implemented into a diet by eating either fish or taking supplements. Fish oil is extracted from selected fish that contain highly beneficial healthy oils known as omega-3 fatty acids, two of the most important omega-3 fatty acids that are found in fish oil are Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA). Some of these fish that contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids include Tuna, Salmon, Mackerel, Herring, Anchovy’s etc. Fish oil supplementation also often contains small amounts of vitamin E to prevent spoilage and is can be combined with various other minerals and vitamins. There is an array of benefits that are involved when implementing fish oil into a diet; although it’s most common association is that it has been linked to slightly lowering blood pressure or triglyceride levels (fats linked to cholesterol). Although fish oil is recommended for persons with high blood pressure, it’s extremely important to remember that it is only to be taken at recommended dosages as it can ironically increase the chances of stroke when overdosing on the supplement. The scope of this report includes a general comparison between TG and EE fish oil supplements and how they are chemically differentiated, with a focus on how the quality of the two forms of supplement are processed. This report will not focus on other forms of fish oil sources and the impact it might have on irreversible factors such as age, gender, genetics, race/culture or environmental conditions.
Thirdly, I focused mainly on fruits and vegetables products. I introduced some new vegetables and fruits as compared to my regular diet. For instance, I added broccoli, carrots and grapes. This section contains 687 calories from total of my
She consumed 18 grams during the most recent analysis and 17 grams during the first analysis. According to the SuperTracker analysis, it is ok to consume more linoleic acid than the target amount. “Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid of the omega-6 family” (Sizer & Whitney, 2014). Polyunsaturated fatty acids can help reduce the risk of heart disease or heart attack due to the effect on blood lipids (Sizer & Whitney, 2014). Whole wheat bread, chicken and whole wheat pasta are some of the foods Susanne consumed that are excellent sources of linoleic acid
The Weight Watcher’s program was founded in 1961 by Jean Nidetch, who had struggled with her weight throughout childhood and all of her adult life. She decided one day to try yet another diet ran by the New York City Board of Health in Manhattan close to where she lived. After two months she had lost 20 pounds, but she realized a very important component of the diet was missing, a support group of others to share their daily battles with their weight issues. She began writing down all the things she had learned from her meetings in Manhattan and started inviting friends over who were fighting their own battles with their weight. Soon this diet that starting out with a few lady’s in the middle of one lady’s living room would later become a world icon. In late 1961 the Weight Watcher’s Program began. By 1963, just two years Weight Watcher’s was incorporated and by 1967 Weight Watcher’s went global and became Weight Watcher’s International, Inc. including Canada, Puerto Rico, Great Brittain and Israel. Today Weight Watcher’s is one of the leading diet programs in America and operates in over 30 different countries. (Weight Watchers founder Jean Nidetch shares her start, 2010).
Nutrition, I have learned plays a big part in our life. To be honest I was clueless about how much nutrition affected our everyday lives. I love going to the gym working out, now that I know what should go into my diet I think I will see a lot more improvement. I occasionally follow the latest diet fads because I believed it would be better for my health, but in turn it really hurt more than it helped! This Diet Analysis project has been extremely useful course because I can personally relate to it and can use much of the information learned to my daily routines. The Diet Analysis project was a real eye opener because it let me see what exactly I was putting into my diet.
Nutrition and physical activity are important aspects as they improve health and reduce chronic diseases. In June of this year my family physician placed me on a doctor assisted weight loss program that enabled me to eat my favorite foods but in appropriate proportions and in heathier ways. The best part about Supertracker is that it gives me wonderful tools to support me in understanding and meeting my goals. Once I created a profile through Supertracker I was provided a personal plan to follow including the amount of grains, vegetables, fruits, and protein I needed to be successful. For three consecutive days, I entered my food and activity intake into Supertracker and was able to analyze the excesses and deficiencies
The diet that I am currently on is not as nutritious as it should be. By looking at the Dietary Recommended Intakes for my age and comparing it to my current dietary habits, I hav...
Compared to the recommendations that I received from the Food Guide Pyramid, I would say that my diet is not where it is supposed to be. To gain a healthy lifestyle and to reach the specific targets for the main food groups on (Super Tracker , 2015). There is a lot of work that must be done. According to the Food Guide Pyramid my meals over the three day period exceeded the amount of calories that I should have eaten. I know that this is true because out of the three days I had McDonald’s for lunch twice. I know that eating fast food is a bad habit of mine and is one if the main reason why I cannot maintain a healthy lifestyle.
This diet critique will be from everything I ate from Sunday, February 7 to Saturday, February 13. According to my dietary reference intake (DRI), I was allowed 2191 kcal for the week and I consumed 1978kcal. I met 90.3% of what I am allowed, although it Is on the higher end of the range it is still within. My calories from fat were 647kcal and my max allowed is 767kcal. Although I did not go over the minimum I was allowed was 438kcal so I still went over 209kcal from fat in which could be avoided. Checking the fat content on my snacks and limiting myself could reduce my actual intake while still being in range. The same applies to my total fat intake. My max was 85g and I consumed 72g when the lowest could have been 49g.this is still 23g of fat consumed that I did not not. Especially for trans fat I consumed 3.2g when ideally it should be 0g. Eliminated trans fat as a whole because there is no nutritional benefit would eliminate this entirely from my diet. My omega 6 and omega 3 intakes did not meet my DRI. I consumed only 3.9 g or omega 6 when my DRI is 12g and I consumed 0.5g of omega 3 when my DRI was 1.1g. To increase my omega 6 intake, I could start using grapeseed oil instead of the cheapest one I find which may not be the healthiest. I already use purchase grapeseed oil for my hair so getting another bottle to cook with would be easy. To increase my omega 3 intake, I could start consuming more beef and salmon in my diet, the majority of the meat I eat in my diet is chicken, so this switch could add variety.
The thought of consuming large quantities of herring and mackerel monthly, in an attempt to acquire the essential omega-3 fatty acids, repels many people. Knowing this, scientists have successfully extracted the beneficial Omega-3 components. While salmon and tuna steaks may make for tasteful entrees from time to time, eating seafood daily can quickly become unappealing. Fish oil is beneficial for children and adults who suffer from health conditions as well as those that retain good health. Healthful properties extend well beyond advertisements geared toward the masses.
After a full week (7 days) I can conclude that my baseline data is as exactly as I sadly expected it to be. I started recording my baseline starting on Monday and ended my week on Sunday. Throughout that week I ate alarmingly unhealthy and made many unsound food decisions. There wasn’t much change from day to day in terms of eating healthier on any day. Throughout the work week (Monday-Thursday) I ate a rather low calorie nutritional breakfast of oatmeal which is what I always eat for breakfast at work. The weekend is where I normally eat out for breakfast. On Friday I ate Shipley’s Donuts and Home cooked Biscuits and Gravy on Saturday. Sunday I skipped breakfast and had lunch which consisted of a Taco Bell Quesorito and a soda. I know, I’m horrible! Lunch and Dinner throughout the entire week was an unhealthy mess that varied from Burgers, Pasta, Fast Food Meals, Taco’s, and Hamburger Helpers. * Insert Sad Face*
Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
A couple things that I need to add more to my diet are fiber and vegetables. First semester of college, I was living in the dorms called Eaton, which is located next to a dining center and a “fast food” place called Clyde’s. For me, it was very easy to walk a half of a mile down the sidewalk to get something fast to eat. What I didn’t realize was how bad their food is for you and how often I made an appearance there. It wasn’t until winter break when I came home for a couple weeks and started to get back to my old ways of eating when my mom would prepare every meal, which would include some type of meat, potatoes, and fruits and vegetables.
While I was tracking my eating for these three days, I began to learn about the benefits of the food that I am eating and the nourishment that they provide for my body. I had never realized how big of a role that the food that I eat plays in my everyday life. Eating has never been something that I really think about it is just something that I do. After I looking at the data of what I eat on Choose My Plate, I realized that my eating habits are far from balanced and that I needed to work on bringing my eating habits to a better balance. While there are a lot of things that I have been doing right, there are also many things that I can work on.
