“To have loss one must first have loved.” This anonymous quote demonstrates the innate relationship between loving someone and the loss that follows. Both love and loss are instrumental in the development of a child into a well-rounded adult. Having these experiences can sometimes be painful at the moment. However, these experiences can give people perspective and respect for others going through different stages of their lives. In both the novel The Fault in Our Stars and the short story “Scarlet Ibis” the main characters are perfect examples of the connection between love and loss. When he ran back, he found his brother bleeding and unresponsive. Grief then followed as this young child dealt with the guilt of being a factor in his brother's death. Although the unnamed narrator pushed his brother too hard, there were positive moments along the way. Doodle learned how strong he really was, even though all the doctors claimed he would never walk. This great loss of shame no doubt affected the character's personality. Looking back, the unnamed narrator regrets the high level of pressure he placed upon Doodle. Even though the loss is tragic, the death of Doodle helps the unnamed narrator reflect on the power of pride. The development of a child to an adult is consequential by the connections made and the problems overcome. For the unnamed narrator, part of his development was brotherly love and regrettable death. How and when one experiences these difficult emotions depends. However, love and loss are both a powerful driver in becoming a compassionate adult.
