In the non-fictional book, The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama and the fictional poem, “ The Suicide Note” by Janice Mirikitani has character(s) that lose something valuable. From both book and poem I can related to the loss that I have endured during my life. However, the loss of both are different for The Samurai’s Garden, Matsu loss her sister from leprosy and Sachi loss her best friend. In “The Suicide Note” the Asian-American student’s family loss their daughter because they think she was never good enough. In The Samurai’s Garden, the plot is Matsu told Stephen about her younger sister’s death. While Matsu stated what Tomoko’s steps of leading to death, Matsu ended by saying, “ ‘I won’t live like this,’ she repeated over and over again in a chant. It was as if she already knew what would become of her. Three days later when I went to check on Tomoko, my sixteen-year-old sister had found my father’s fishing knife and ended her life” (Tsukiyama 156). However, because of her parents always said to her that she is not good enough of getting less than a perfect four-point grade average. Nevertheless, in the poem it stated, “dear mother and father. I apologize for disappointing you. I have worked very hard, not good enough”, which her parent made the made the whole atmosphere for their daughter worse because she is already way over her head. Also, She feels stressed and pressured, which one-day, she was on the edge of her emotion and led to her to jump to her death from her dorm window. Knights and samurai have a lot in common. For example, they both follow a code and protect land. Although they are very similar, there are a lot of things that set them apart. Samurai had a different social status, had different weapons, and expectations. While knights and samurai have many similarities, in a one on one battle, the advantage would be to the knights and this can be seen in their honor code, training, and armor.
One of them is by helping people from Yamaguchi, those who are feared, shunned, and punished by the society because of their illnesses. When the village of Yamaguchi catches on fire, Matsu’s first instinct was to help all of those who lost their homes. Along with Stephen, they both spent several weeks rebuilding houses. Sachi was very upset, even mad because the people had already lost so much and now they were losing their homes too. Matsu made her realize that they lost things that can be replaced. “As long as they are alive to do so, that’s what is important” (123), he is telling Sachi that they should appreciate that they are alive because for all they know, it could have been worse. Matsu sacrificed himself to Yamaguchi, he gave up opportunities of living somewhere else. Another characteristic that Matsu embodies is his internal strength. The strength that he possesses is shown during Kenzo’s burial, “Matsu was silent throughout the entire procession, simply bowing his head to those who showed their sympathy at the loss of his good friend” (109). His internal strength comes from within, which allows him to remain calm and to prevent emotional pain. After his best friend committed suicide, Matsu turned to his garden, a place of peace. Do you know someone in the military? A loved one, a friend, do you know what they go through? I may not, but I do know about the harsh training and war that occurred for the Samurais and Knights. In Europe and Japan the empires were falling and Clans were taking over Japan. The government came up with an idea to create feudalism. There was an agreement in both Europe and Japan that exchanged land for protection. The similarities between Samurai and Knights were greater than the differences. This can be shown by looking at the three most similar areas: social position, training and armor, and life, honor, and death. The Samurai and Knights has their differences, but were the similarities greater than those differences.
The sympathy of loss is persuaded as a devastating way on how a person is in a state of mind of losing. A person deals with loss as an impact on life and a way of changing their life at the particular moment. In the poem, the poet uses symbolism to show how teacher was not actually grading the paper, but she was trying to see her inside the student. First instance which shows this is when the teacher tells the student that she would have wrote the paper differently. The teacher said, “I’d have said it differently, / or rather, said something else” (17-18). This shows that the teacher was not grading the student on his writing, but she was comparing him to herself, and she was trying to tell him that he should have written the way she writes. Another instance which shows symbolism is when the teacher tells the student that she would have quoted the context. The teacher says,” I would have quoted in this context” (24). This shows that not only she did not grade the student on his writing, but she is showing the way she would have written the paper. Another symbol that the poet uses to show that the teacher was not grading the paper, but was trying to see herself in the story is when after finding the mistakes, the teacher says that after all the student is not her and it is natural to have fault in his paper. The teacher said, “You are not/ me, finally, / and though this is an awkward problem, involving/ and inescapable fast that you are so young, so young/ it is also a delightful provocation” (34-38). Gordon’s voice is sad and stressful but all of this just what she thinks about the history, but Chinese Poetry is different, they has a lot of diversity voice in there, some sad, some depressed, some hopeless, but there are some of them is hopeful and want to have a better life in America. In my opinion, I like the way people who look into the history to learn and improve themselves than just getting angry and sad with something happened long time ago. Reading Chinese Poetry, I can feel the sadness of them Chinese and Vietnamese have similar culture and I could understand why they were so anxious and stressful. It is very likely that Louise Erdrich experienced some kind of racism or prejudice in her lifetime. Segregation laws were still in use while she was growing up in the fifties, and in the sixties, many of the same people still felt racist, with or without the laws. Boarding schools were not an exception to this fact either. School authorities probably did take advantage of the fact that boarding schools are away from home and not under the watchful eye of any parent. This poem demonstrates the truth of what it really felt and feels like to have lived through such bad treatment. It is disturbing to think that instead of just learning at school, Louise Erdrich, amongst other children, may have learned what it felt like to be hated. At such early ages, they taught these children that the way they were treated was how the world was supposed to be. It displays the painful scars embedded so deeply into a child, from a time that should have been the most nurturing part of his/her life.

In the story, Nectar and the Sieve, loss is a tragedy well known to the protagonist Rukmani. Rukmani finds loss in her children leaving and dying, but her relationship with Kenny helps her through the many hardships she faces. When the tannery comes to their villages many more jobs come available but the attraction of people raises her families rent, which causes starvation to courses through her family.
This woman who lived during the pre-cultural revolution time period wanted to study so bad and the only way she knew how to convey this desire to her parents was to attempt suicide. Not only did this cause problems for the educated female, it also caused problems for her family.
She honored her parents as she should, but longed for them to pass. In the beginning of the story she said "I had never expected my parents to take so long to die.” She had taken care of them all of her life she was in her fifty’s and her parents in their ninety’s. She was ready to live and break free of all the rules and duties put upon her, they were like chains binding her and holding her down. It is very difficult for her to move on from her deceased father based on the matrimonial mistake. The speaker of the poem could have has Electra complex, which means the daughter is actually in love with the father through childhood. That assumption could relate to the hatred/ love relationship with her father. This then contributes to her inferiority and childish qualities that are emphasized throughout the poem. The tone changed frequently during the poem in order to repress the love for her father. The story is no longer the daughter’s attempt to reunite with and to marry the dead father; it is now the daughter’s wish to overthrow his dominance over her imagination and to “kill” him and the man who takes his place.
