While plenty of professors have complained about the lack of accuracy or completeness of entries, and some have discouraged or tried to bar students from using it.
My grandmother introduced me to reading before I’d even entered school. She babysat me while my parents were at work, and spent hours reading to me from picture books as my wide eyes drank in the colorful illustrations. As a result, I entered my first year of school with an early passion for reading. Throughout elementary and middle school, I was captivated by tales of fire-breathing dragons, mystical wizards, and spirited foreign gods. A book accompanied me nearly everywhere I went, smuggled into my backpack or tucked safely under my arm. I was often the child who sat alone at lunch, not because she didn’t have friends, but because she was more interested in a wizards’ duel than the petty dramas of middle school girls. I was the child who passed every history test because she was the only kid who didn’t mind reading the textbook in her spare time, and the child who the school librarian knew by name. Reading provided a
My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. We were the planets orbiting around one sun that was the bookshelf. Little did I know that books would be the catalyst to academic success in my early life, and I owe it all to my family. Although a life with a book in your nose might seem boring, I was never bored. Living through the characters vicariously, I explored Narnia with Lucy, attended Hogwarts with Harry, and rode dragons with Eragon. Of course
In a world full of technology, whether it be computers, phones, or anything digital, it's almost daunting to pick up a good old fashioned book. But if we take the time to open that musty old collection of papers and ink, we might be surprised at what books actually have to offer. In fact, as a general principle, the book is almost always better than the movie.
Books are becoming increasingly more digital, the release of the Kindel set the digital book age in motion. The Ipad hopes to bring books and print media to users in its own interactive digital way, possibly out shadowing the Kindel soon due to its other useful functions. The book function in the Ipad even gives the reade...
Rowling as one of the ten most influential people in publishing” (Teare, 550). If you did not know, Mrs. Rowling is the author of a very popular series which is called Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a young boy who is taken to a magic school in order to pursue his career as a wizard in a place named Hogwartz. Elizabeth Teare, a graduate of Dayton University and a professor at Yale University, talks about how influential Harry Potter really is. As we all know, magic is not real and it can only be bought with your imagination. Surprisingly, there have been millions of people who love and enjoy the Harry Potter series especially kids. “Child readers, according to advocates of book culture, are better children then those who clamor for the newest video games” (Teare, page 550). I completely agree with that statement, kids now in days do not even pick up a book due to the impact video games has on them. The book had changed the game, causing kids to actually use their brain and imagine things that they may have never thought about. “’I don’t think they should make TV shows because then when you imagine stuff from the book, then it will be much different,’ says Sam Piazza, 10, of Silver Springs’” (Teare, page 551). A kid’s imagination is very important in my opinion and it shows a lot to how they are growing mentally and how they see everything in their own way. One cannot buy imagination, it must come from you not anyone
In the “age of electronic entertainment”, Harry Potter novels sharply contrast by luring children away from the internet, and away from video games and the television. Children across the globe are rapidly becoming interested in reading the novels. Katherine Thompson, owner of Frugal Frigate Bookstore, declared the series a “literary phenomena.” She noted that children as young as eight-years-old will devour...
We now find ourselves on the breadth of a new revolution, and a new era. The development of electronic books, or eBooks, has changed the way people all over the world read, whether it is for study or entertainment. It is now possible to carry an entire library of 3500 (Carnoy) books or more in the palm of your hand. While the resource of electronic books has countless benefits, there are still many who prefer the comfort of tradition.
In Esther Meek’s book, Little Manual for Knowing, she makes the statement that “readiness to know is maturity in love” (Meek 32). Knowing is seeking a relationship between you and the person or object you covet. Meek prescribes two ways to achieve maturity in love. First, “the idea that it takes another person or persons to help us be the persons we are” (Meek 33). Discovering yourself is found in your environment and surroundings. Second, “the idea that it takes developing fully as human persons in all four dimensions of humanness” (Meek 33). All four dimensions are required in order to mature. Those four dimensions being, ourselves, our situations, an awakening for a higher entity and a want for a new and improved being. Esther continues
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.

Before reading Harry Potter, I very rarely read for pleasure. I found reading boring, almost old fashioned. My frame of mind more readily paralleled Danny Divito in the movie Matlida, who says that “[t]here's nothing you can get from a book that you can't get from a television faster.” While my view of reading as a child could be summed up in that quote, everything changed when I was introduced to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I can remember to this day when my Dad began reading Harry Potter to me, and how I did not understand just how much this book would change me. Harry Potter and his world of wizardry became my own personal Shangri-La, my escape, my own world. Anytime I wanted, I could ascend to a world of fantasy and explore the depths of my own imagination in a way that I had never been capable of doing before. I became obsessed with the book, reading it before, during, and after sc...

However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
