Radiation is the emission of energy as electromagnetic waves or as moving subatomic particles; an example of radiation is, electromagnetic radiation.This is a form of radiant energy which travels through space via electromagnetic waves. These waves can be found in the electromagnetic spectrum. This is the range of all possible frequencies of electromagnetic radiation.The range of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum range from radio waves, to gamma rays, the waves in the middle consists of infrared, visible, and ultraviolet waves. In this spectrum frequency and wavelength play a big part on which kind of wave is present. At different frequencies, (the amount of waves per second) and wavelength ,( the length of the wave measured from peak to peak) there are different waves, as these factors change so does the property of the wave. In this essay I will be talking about ultraviolet radiation.
In this diagram you can see the electromagnetic spectrum. It shows the different types of waves. It also goes on to show the wavelength of the waves, as the wave length changes so do the properties of the wave.
The sun emits several types of radiation, most of radiation reaches the earth's surface. Warmth from the sun comes from infrared radiation. While the light and colours we distinguish is caused by visible radiation. Infrared and visible radiation are not harmful under ordinary circumstances. The higher energy part of the spectrum is ultraviolet radiation, a known carcinogen (cancer-causing agent). Both UVA and UVB radiation from the ultraviolet radiation reach the earth's surface. They are both horrible diseases. Though large amount of ultraviolet radiation is not healthy, however, when considering that it gives out Vitamin D we should be able to stay out in the sun for a little while. Nevertheless, when planning to stay out for a long time while the sun is shining do not forget to protect yourself! The more ultraviolet radiation in your body, the more danger on your skin.

Tanning affects the human skin through ultraviolet radiation, part of the spectrum of light that omits from the sun to the surface of the earth. Ultraviolet A rays are the longer ultraviolet rays that are projected, and these rays penetrate deep into the layers of skin, causing a tanning effect (Harvard Women's Health Watch, 2). It does this by penetrating into the lower layers of skin, or the epidermis, and triggering cells known as melanocytes to make melanin, the brown pigment that causes tanning (Hyde, Patrice, MD, 1). Sun shine contain ultraviolet ray which can cause the sunburn or even skin cancer. According to Cancer Council in Australia, Australia has highest incident rate of skin cancer in the world. More than 430000 Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer each year. There are approximately 60 percent of people who have got skin cancer will survive greater than five years after they diagnosis (Cancer Council Australia, 2014). In order to protect people under the sun, the sun protective behaviour is significant necessary.
Ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation is a type of ultraviolet (means ‘beyond violet’) radiation that forms a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Its primary natural source is the sun, but could also be emitted by artificial sources such as UVB lights, excimer lasers and fluorescents. Most UVB produced by sunlight is absorbed by oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere and forms the ozone layer of lower stratosphere. When the amount of ozone in the ozone layer is reduced, more UVB radiation reaches the surface of earth and can cause damaging effects to human health such as skin and eye, nevertheless UVB could also beneficial in some ways when it comes to produce vitamin D and used in medical devices.
Over all, skin cancer is known to be a very common and dangerous cancer among the U.S.. Although there is no superior or particular cause known for it, it can be reduced by reducing radiation exposure from the sun and also tanning booths and beds. If not attempting to prevent it by staying out of the sun, and seeking not seeking shade and so forth, protection such as longer clothing garments that better cover the body as well as hats and sunglasses can help to eliminate direct exposure and reduce some of the damages that may occur. Since ancient times vitamin D has been the predominant cause of bone deficiencies.1 However, it was not in till the seventeenth century when both Dr. Daniel Whistler and Professor Francis Glisson made the first scientific description of a vitamin D deficiency.2 During the mid-seventeenth century there was an increase amount of children that were diagnosed with the bone disease called rickets.2 The cause of the rickets was determined to be associated to the lack of sunlight. A German researcher Kurt Huldschinsky came to the conclusion that when infants were exposed to ultraviolet light rays they became cured of rickets2. He stated that a substance in the skin was the potential source of the cure.2 In 1922, American scientist Elmer McCollum proved that when cod liver oil was heated; the beneficial effects of vitamin A in the oil were reduced.2 However, the oil remained effective in curing rickets leading McCollum to reason that a nutrient different from vitamin A was present in the oil. As a result, he named this nutrient vitamin D, which became the fourth vitamin to be discovered and named.2 Additionally, shortly after 1918, vitamin D was also discovered by an accidental experiment that included a group of scientists curing dogs affected with rickets by feeding cod liver oil to them.1
Scientists have performed many different tests and studies to learn more about high exposure to UV. Close observation of cells have shown that sunlight, natural or artificial, can cause mutations or DNA damage in cells. This can lead to further damage which will then be passed down through generations. Another study scientists perform is on animals. Scientist will expose your typical lab animals to UV rays, and this test typically results in skin cancer on the animal. It consists of photons, which are massless bundles of concentrated electromagnetic energy. Light’s lower frequency is red, and the higher frequency is blue. Like sound, light has frequencies humans can’t detect. Ultraviolet light is at a frequency higher than violet, and infrared is at the frequency lower than the red of visible light. We get UV (ultraviolet) rays from the sun, and infrared is used in night vision to see better.

This disease, which was nearly eradicated in the early 20th century, has become a re-emerging health concern for various countries in the past ten years. Certain factors such as poor nutrition as a result of low socioeconomic status or high concentrations of melanin in the skin can increase the chances of getting rickets. Sufficient Vitamin D levels are crucial to the functioning of the body, especially in the absorption of calcium. This essay will examine the causes, symptoms, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of rickets; as well as the importance of Vitamin D and calcium in the prevention and treatment of this disease.
Vitamin D is a necessary component for calcium absorption to prevent boss loss. Vitamin A is important for bone growth, vision, cell division and cell differentiation. There are two different forms of vitamin A are retinol and beta-carotene. Retinol can be found in meat, poultry, fish and dairy products while beta-carotene can be found in fruits, vegetables and
We need the sun for everything; food, transportation, education, and just to live. The sun negatively affects us in our daily lives because our skin is sensitive to the sun. This means that we are prone to burn. A way to protect our skin is with sunscreen. The short-term effect of not wearing sunscreen when exposed to the sun is you can get a painful rash or peeling of skin can occur. Long-term effects of not protecting yourself from the sun can be that it changes your DNA or gives you skin cancer. It changes your DNA by radiation smashing into you skin. The reason why this is so dangerous is because the DNA will now instruct the skin to fix itself because of the radiation, but the instructions would have been changed. It can also speed up
