Anyone can attest to the positive effects of sunlight, but it doesn’t just help the plants grow, it is necessary to us as human beings. Its effects go far beyond just brightening your mood or giving you a beautiful day at the beach. The amount of sun we are exposed to can have profound effects. Sunlight is necessary for good mental health. It keeps our hormones balanced, affects our daily motivation, and changes our perspectives on the different aspects of life all together. Furthermore, it has a dramatic effect on us physically by keeping our immune system at its best and giving our bodies essential vitamins that we could not live without. The main point is sunlight has a direct effect on a person’s mental wellbeing, physical health, and overall quality of life
Some people might doubt that sun exposure can affect someone on a psychological, but the facts cannot be denied. All data aside, you probably experience this on a daily basis. I conducted a survey to see how local weather affected peoples’ moods. 53 people, whose ages ranged from early teens to elderly, responded with very telling results. 69.8% of the people surveyed answered that sunny weather initially made them feel happy. On the other hand, only 21% answered that they felt happy when the weather outside was cloudy or rainy.
The effects of sunshine on a person’s mind can also be seen over lengths of time. As the seasons run their course, most people react to the change in environmental light with a gradual shift in energy. The body seems to become slower. Motivation to do anything takes a hit. In fact, in a survey taken in Maryland, over 90% of the people surveyed reported that they noticed a change in mood, behavior, and energy levels with the change of seasons. ...

Sharon Begley, author of “Happiness: Enough Already,” proclaims that dejection is not an unacceptable state of mind and there are experts that endorses gloomy feelings. This reading explicates that even though every-one should be happy there is no need to ignore sadness, as both emotions share key parts in everyone’s life. Sharon Begley and her team of specialists provides the information on why sadness is supplemental to a person’s life.
“Typus melancholicus mirrored a particularly respected personality style in Japan: those who were serious, diligent, and thoughtful and expressed great concern for the welfare of other individuals and the society as a whole” (Watters 520). It’s reasonable to believe that this personality type is one of the reasons for depression in Japan. Sadness or depression is viewed as a way of creating stronger connections with family and their community. Kirmayer noted that personal hardships build character and connected it to the “Buddhist belief that suffering is more enduring and more definitive of the human experience than transient happiness.” (Watters 522).
Stephen M. Schuller and Acacia C. Parks research shows that circumstantial factors do not adequately explain different level of happiness. Positive reactions will contribute to everyone’s happiness just as well as negative reactions do. I agree with Schuller and Parks when it comes down to where your happiness comes from. I believe your happiness comes from how you react to every situation in your life and how you let it affect your happiness. Therefore, I do not agree with Newman and Larsen due to him believing your happiness is out of your control. A smile has the incredible ability to hide anything. “The funny thing is, nobody ever really knows how much anybody else is hurting. Some may say that “[t]he hardest years in life are those between ten and seventy” (Anonymous). During these years of life, people face an uncountable number of struggles and are exposed the true disfigurement of the world. When people undergo extreme or stressful situations that they cannot possibly handle and face the grief-stricken tragedies of the world, such as death, they normally fall into a dark hole called depression. Depression resides everywhere and it has existed for centuries. Throughout the years, however, it has progressively gotten worse. During the 1970s, depression constituted a less severe issue than it does in today’s society. In the 1970s, depression started to gain more attention as such an extensive problem, and began affecting humanity at a more youthful age as the years continued. The number of people suffering from depression today has nearly doubled since the 1970s. However, depression presents just as much of a concern today as it has in the past. In The Optimist's Daughter, Eudora Welty portrays depression through the juxtaposition of characters, her use of symbolism, and verbal irony portrayed throughout the novel.
