In the book Globalization: A Very Short Introduction by Manfred Steger and the reprint Globalization and the Impact of American Popular Culture Abroad by Carl Guarneri, the point is made how recognized globalization has become and how much it has affected citizens around the world. Some of the debates over the effects of cultural globalization are: the West and its multinational corporations after World War II, what it promotes to the world’s people, the views of consumer capitalism’s effects and the repercussions of the globalization of culture. Many people argue that the West has dictated the global market for media, music and mass culture by multinational corporations. This dominance started to take place after World War II. This happened after the war because American businesses increased their profit by selling our nation’s pop culture abroad. In the reprint by Car Guarneri, he states that American corporations overwhelmingly took over foreign countries with: “movies, newspapers and magazines, jazz, rock and roll, comic strips, cartoons and ultimately television programs”(5). This process could be largely related to imperialism in the way that America is submersing other countries in its own cultures and ideas. American has already been doing this for more than sixty years since after the war, so there is no going back to the way things were before. If anything, our country is only going to get worse in dominating other countries to incorporate our culture into theirs. This cultural globalization that our country is promoting, supports both sameness and variety among the world’s people. If anything, our country is only going to get worse in controlling other countries to integrate our culture into theirs. This means that national identities won’t even be conceivable because every country will have one national identity. If our country were promoting dissimilarity among its citizens, then this number of diversity in languages wouldn’t be plunging this significantly. We can only wait to see what comes of our nation in the future and hope that we can get back to the era where we were all created equal. Works Cited Steger, Manfred B. An artistic achievement that can demonstrate that the United States is in its Golden Age is its very influential fast growing entertainment business, a business very important to the U.S. economic activity. The U.S. entertainment has been popular around the world globalizing U.S. pop culture and the U.S. entrainment business economy. This globalization is a result of new innovations, that the U.S. itself developed, that allows film, music, and television, to spread worldwide. Because the U.S. is generally first to have such innovations the entertainment is commonly considered better quality thus appealing to the masses of people. Other factors that lead to the huge success of its entertainment business include their methods of distribution, which is through large and powerful foreign companies, and their large English-speaking market potential. High market ability and general international appeal of the U.S. entertainment business has put the U.S. in a “Golden ...
Cultural Studies, as the name implies, is a broad and far reaching discipline which takes into account many fields of study, ideas and theories. Popular culture, a branch of cultural studies; looks into the transformation of culture as it is continuously molded through the devices of language, symbols and theories. In today's world, however, globalization has become a major concern as cultures from around the world are becoming meshed together resulting a new world order (or disorder as implied by Barker). The concerns of globalization involve capitalist influence, a rapidly growing dependence on technology, and the possibility of the world entering into a cyber-capitalist era. The ideas of importance in this essay are as follows: Marxism, Panopticism, and Globalization. The movies that shall be examined, in relation to the ideas listed above, are as follows: Beijing Bicycle, The Hunger Games, and Fahrenheit 451. Capitalism, the embodiment of the American dream, is the idea of personal property and the pursuit of personal wealth; but, is Capitalism truly what it promises to represent? In taking a look at the movie, Beijing Bicycle, will the darker side of Capitalism emerge from its illusory pledge?
Though some may believe that the globalization of pop culture is weakening our collective identity, it is actually the opposite, the globalization of pop culture in fact strengthens it. No matter what way, whether it be by promoting and teaching Canadian culture to the world or by raising Canadian personalities through the internet, the globalization of pop culture has been nothing short of benefits for the Canadian
Many people might have a diverse opinion on the extend of the American cultural influence on Canada, but the truth is, these two countries share a long common border, they use frequently the same language, they watch the same movies, listen to the same music and collaborate on other numerous levels, including economic and political activity. In this paper, I would like to show the extent of the influence on Canadian popular culture that comes from the United States. For my analysis I have chosen four segments of popular culture: television, printed media, music and films. In these are the main sectors where we can see the biggest evidence of this phenomenon. In the first part I would like to shortly introduce the history of this issue. The second part is the analysis of the four sectors.
Cultural globalization involves the “spread of culture beyond the region or state from which it originated.” (Davies 1). To understand what cultural globalization is, one must understand what falls under the category of culture, which includes religion, language,
Pop culture in the 1950s and 1960s began to spread and infest the nation from front to back through radio shows, books and magazines, television programs, and even motion pictures. Whether it is culture in terms of political affairs, clothing or the latest musical sensations, the United States has always played the dominant role when it came to who knows what is best, first. Some cases of Americanizati...

Globalisation is a phenomenon that has led to abundant connections between cultures and people, which has in turn stimulated the reception and the export of all types of artistic and cultural features. It was commonly believed that these cultural flows were simply a form of imperialism and domination by the Western world over the non-West. Nevertheless, as Chris Barker states in Cultural Studies, “Globalization is not constituted by a monolithic one-way flow from 'the west to the rest'” (163). In many cases, the West becomes the target of this flux of exchange, and it is influenced by the ideas and perceptions that are imported from other parts of the world. Some
According to our class discussion culture is a shared way of life with material land non-material components that are shared through customs and behavior. Culture is not static people shape and change culture. A culture can change through many ways but this paper is going to focus on two three specific ways global businesses, immigration and media. The term globalization can be worrisome for many as they fear the changes the country is making. Nevertheless globalization does not have to be detrimental to our culture in fact I argue that in some way globalization improves American culture.
Globalization refers to the absence of barriers that every country had. Yes, it has helped to demolish the walls that separated us .Globalization, which is the process of growing interdependence among every country in this planet, can be seen as a sign of hopeful and better future by some, but for others it represents a huge disaster for the whole world. That’s why we are going to see the negative effect that globalization has on culture then focus on the ethical disadvantage it brought, to finally talk about the damage it did to skilled workers.
