Globalization Globalization is one of the main aspects in the 21st century. Globalization has brought the world closer; all the things that are happening nowadays are recognized globally even if they happened locally (Buckley). According to Nayef Al-Rodhan GCSP (Geneva Centre for Security Policy) globalization is not a single word or concept. It contains many other concepts within itself. Globalization is composed of different concepts like incorporation regarding the economics, transmitting information or understandings, stability within beliefs, and other concepts (Al-Rodhan p.3). This paper deals with the definition of Globalization, the advantages and disadvantages of globalization, and based on these information the views that to which extend the globalization is beneficial for majority of the world's population. The concept of globalization has changed the whole shape of the world. It has both its positive and negative impacts on people's life. However, by taking both the advantages and disadvantages into consideration we can find that to a large extend globalization is beneficial for majority of the world's population. With the help of globalization the works that were difficult in past is getting easier in today's environment. People are getting closer to each other, which is a product of globalization. Moreover, the knowledge and informations are being circulated in very good way which is a very good sign for having a good and prosperous life. As being a main concept of 21st century knowing the definition of globalization is important. “Globalization contributes to sustainable prosperity for all people”. This quote contains mostly truth but there are also many arguments towards how globalization really does contribute to sustainable prosperity for people all around the world. This can be supported by three main points. How the rise of Japan’s economy effected the lives of millions of people. How shipwrecking effects the lives of both the ship companies and the workers in Bangladesh, and how economic growth contributes to the sustainable prosperity of the population in a specific nation. Sustainable prosperity can be defined differently from different individuals because of people’s personal opinions and their perspective is also effected by the people who influence their lives the most, but the main definition of prosperity is to have good fortune, or growth in an economic way. As Thomas Friedman explains in his book “The World is Flat”, globalization started “when Columbus set sail, opening trade between the Old World and the New World.” Afterwards, “multinational companies went global for markets and labor,” and around the year 2000, individuals were the ones who got into the global world. Today, individuals and small groups easily enter the global market, collaborate, and compete - a process described by Friedman as “the flattening of the world.”
Many negative and positive thoughts have been given to the process of globalization. The proponents of globalization rather see the benefits of globalization, while the opponents have based their opinions on the disadvantages of globalization.
Globalization is a broad concept and the angle taken to define it can lead us to interpret the idea in many different ways. There is much controversy about what globalization actually means and many definitions fail to encompass social, cultural and technological exchanges between world systems. John Pilger suggests that "it is a jargon term which journalists and politicians have made fashionable which is often used in a positive sense to denote a 'Global village' of free trade, hi-tech marvels and all kinds of possibilities that transcend class, historical experience and ideology." (J.Pilger 1998:63). Taking a broader point of view, Bilton et al defines globalization as "The process whereby political, social, economic and cultural relations increasingly take on a global scale, and which has profound consequences for individuals, local experiences and everyday lives."
Globalization is defined as “the historical process involving a fundamental shift or transformation in the spatial scale of human social organization that links distant communities and expands the reach of power relations across regions and continents (Baylis, 2014).”
