The issue stated that humanity has made little progress in spite of technological innovations over the past centuries. It is true that technology have made many errors to threaten humanity. However I do not wholly agree that technological innovation has not contributed to improve humanity. The development of technology helps to enhance quality of life but also introduces more bright future, solving problems that we confront today.
Admittedly, we cannot overlook the side effect of technological innovations. Advanced technology has made problems threatening human life such as environment and nuclear weapon.
London Smog, occurred in 1990s, shows that many industry made serious problems like air contamination, and river pollution. At that time, due to many pollutants from factory and company, the air of London was mixed with unknown chemicals and finally resulted in air pollution and respiration diseases for people. Also, atom bomb, which was fell on two cities in Japan, destroyed 70,000 facilities among 90000 buildings. People suffered mortal after-effect of radiation. These cas...
Many people are unknowingly exposed to air pollution and have no idea. Some common causes of air pollution are automobiles, factories, landfills and toxic materials. Air pollution destroys the environment; it causes climate change because it greatly affects the greenhouse effect and it causes acid rain. Acid rain contaminates water and destroys animal’s homes. Air pollution has many effects on people it causes coughing, elevates your risk of asthma, wheezing, it can cause diseases and birth defects. It’s estimated “that seven million people died prematurely in 2012 from exposure to air pollution and that air pollution can cause cardiovascular diseases. The use of incinerators has caused protest movements from the Chinese citizens because they are becoming aware of the air pollution that is being given off from the burning of their trash and the effects it has on their health. There have been many reports of premature births and stillbirths of pregnant women that live near garbage incinerators”( Professional Safety, 2014, p.
Even though, the arguments put forth by the author are relevant to the central theme, they lack clarity. He tends to go off on tangents and loses the flow of the article. It seems that the author has a slight bias against our generation’s obsession with technology, but that can be attributed to him being a quinquagenarian. I feel that the author has not covered the topic thoroughly enough. He has not quite explained the topic in depth or covered it from various perspectives.
Technology is supposed to be seen as such an advancement and great accomplishment. What others may not always know is sometimes it isn’t all fun and games, it can be dangerous. As seen when we created the atomic bomb and guns, their only purpose is to destroy and cause pain to others. Although they are not always in use, they are a constant threat to our well being. We need to take into consideration the positives and the negatives of the technology we create today.
...nd again resulting in creation of bigger markets and pulling large competitors and creating new job opportunities, but the problem is with undefined factors like outsourcing, lack of skill development in respect with technology advancement. Technology advancement may be causing huge impact on employment but it is also making human living better. Technology as became part and parcel of our life so we can’t think of life without technology, but to make sure that the same does not harm our livelihood we should keep in track and sharpen and hone our skills with advancement of technology. (Brynjolfsson & McAfee, 2011)
When humans discovered fire, it was misused by being used as a weapon of war and hunting against both humans and animals which led to massive destruction left by occurrences such as forest fires. When humans developed a successful method of transportation it has led to environmental set backs. For example, when horses were the primary mode of transportation, manure was left everywhere in the streets of cities which understandably, led to the cultivation of numerous diseases. When gasoline cars took a rise due to their convenience, the Earth took a horrible environmental toll and the quality of life degraded to the rising levels of greenhouse gases. It seems that with every technological advancement introduced, there are always potential set
In today's world, technology is constantly changing from a new paperclip to an improvement in hospital machinery. Technology lets people improve the way they live so that they can preserve their own personal energy and focus on the really important factors in life. Some people focus their energy on making new innovations to improve transportation and the health of people that may save lives and some people focus on making new designs of packaging CDS. Technology is significant in everyone's life because it rapidly changes what is in the market. But, some new innovations of technology are ridiculous because they serve no purpose in helping mankind.
The quality of life had been reduced to disease ridden place because there was no order to these urban areas. There is no space for living in these urban areas, London being no exception at the time. Despite being littered with pollution the goods people demanded came at a decent and cheap price through the factories. The new machinery at the time (flying shuttle, spinning frame, etc) reduced the amount manual labor for the people and reduced the price significantly for quality goods. And people began to get jobs that pay higher prices (doc 8). The impact of these factories are devastating to the workers, particularly the children who run the dangerous operation as well as the people who live nearby to the pollution producing factories. People are getting sick and some have to work hard to get paid next to
New technological advancements develop all around us and due to its constant presence, it becomes difficult to avoid its disastrous changes. In the short story “There Will Come Soft Rains”, the article “A Star is Born”, the essay “The Future of Luxuries”, and the provided handout, technology is the prime topic. In his short story, Ray Bradbury delves into the deterioration of a society due to chemical warfare; in his article, Lev Grossman explains that society is on the verge of obtaining a fusion reactor; in his essay, Hans Magnus Enzenberger discusses the larceny of certain human luxuries in his essay; and in the handout, supplementary information on nuclear bombs is provided. Technology has become a menace to society for the reasons that
Since the beginning of man, humans have adapted to their environment by creating tools; some of the earliest being stones and sticks to the introduction of the wheel, in which all were purposed to make life more efficient. Yet there are those who believe that some revolutionary innovations have actually hindered humankind more than helped. However, these pessimist are faulty since even mistakes made in the technological world have still led to unexpected breakthroughs and in turn their positive effects outweigh their negative ones. Evidently, advancements in technology are made simply to facilitate the survival of humans therefore it is clearly beneficial to society and its growth.
During the winter of 1952-1953, London came face to face with the “heaviest winter smog episode known to men.” (Environmental disasters) During the weeks leading to this even London had been experiencing colder than usual weather. Because of the cold weather, households were burning more coal to keep their families warm. This caused “additional coal combustion and many people travelled only by car, which caused the occurrence of a combination of black soot, sticky particles of tar and gaseous sulphur dioxide.” (Environmental disasters) During this event the numbers of deaths per day increased to a nine times the normal number in some cities. The smog approximately killed 12,000 people. Most of the victims were children and elderly people.
Taking all these factors into consideration, we naturally come to the conclusion that technology is a double edge sword. With no doubt, we cannot live without the advanced science and technology, but it’s undeniable that technology also has its drawbacks as well as merits at the same time. We must try to find out new ways to cope with the problems that would arise at the same time. Immediate measures should be taken to stop the situation urgently. It’s time to take the advice of Turkle and to put special emphasis on the improvement of how to use the technology to help our lives.
Technology is good. It helps man to achieve certain heights but one way or the other technology is destroyin...
In the 21st century, the world has changed in many ways. Some changes have improved the quality of life and health for many people. Others have affected people health and causing different kind of pollution that is harming the environment. That is technology we talking about, it is apply to every one of us in daily life, example the motor vehicles and factory it all producing dangerous and harmful gasses to the environment but we can not live without it.
Albert Einstein once said, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” Technology is a controversial topic, some say we are depending in excess from gadgets and devices. However, if it wasn’t for technology we wouldn’t be able to experience many benefits.
In the 21st century, we live in the era of technology-driven world. Humans never stopped the development of technology, because we always have a natural tendency to pursue a higher level of human being. Technology is the best evidence of human intelligence, which has shown that we are different from other animals. We have lived with technology since we were born. Although it has intervened heavily in our daily lives that we can’t no longer live without, nobody can deny the achievements it has brought to us.
