After reading throughout all the varying leadership styles, I quickly determined that I am much more of a participative leader. I value input from my colleagues and those around me before I make any decision. I want everyone I work with to feel like they had a part to play in whatever project we are tackling. I am a firm believer in the belief that communication is crucial and critical to any type of success. I believe that by taking everyone’s thoughts, and contributions into effect it increases productivity as well as participation. When someone feels like they are an integral part of the decision making process and they feel relevant, their level of commitment increases substantially, in my opinion. However, I had a lot more difficulty …show more content…
I struggled my first few years in college/ out of my moms just to get secure. I never lived in campus housing as it was too expensive, so I transitioned through several part time jobs and apartments, just trying to get settled, be secure enough to pay my bills, and provide food for me and my pets. Now, in grad school, I have a job that I have been at for a couple years, and a stable apartment. Bills are still a struggle, but not as much as it was. Once I got myself settled and focused, I met my best friend, formed a few great friendships with people who shared the same views as me, as well as some that shared most of my views, I became comfortable enough in who I was sexually, to not let societies views hinder my happiness. I formed my identity. I realized who I was as a person, what I thought were right and wrong, and after several years of studying, figured out what I wanted to do in life. Once I opened my eyes to the world around me, once I established what I believed in, I embarked on my current journey. I’m constantly challenging myself to speak up for others, to be a fight for social justice, stand against what is wrong and be an integral part of change. I feel more accomplished now participating in protests and vigils and speaking out on what is wrong than I ever have. I feel like I have a sense of purpose. As far as my leadership style, I integrate that daily into my workplace environment. When I work Service Desk at my job, I take in input from the customer who is returning the item, consult our policies, consult with my coworkers and supervisors to determine what can be done to rectify the situation and provide the best possible solution within our company guidelines. By making sure I follow all the steps I can, making sure I explore all possible options before making a decision, the customer feels like I did what I could and my
A participative leader consults with followers, obtains their ideas and opinions, and integrates their suggestions into the decisions about how the group or organization will proceed” (Northouse, 2016, p.118). As a participative leader, Vida often consults with her staff, obtains their ideas and opinions, and is open minded to their suggestions. For example letting us have flexible hours, because most of us were taking other classes, getting our ideas for recording sessions, and even choosing what snacks we wanted to have available at the
Collaborative leadership is my preferred leadership style. This is because I believe that if everyone contributes and equal participation is encouraged then great things can be achieved. As the cliché saying goes, two heads are better than one. However, an issue I found with collaborative leadership is that not everyone contributes and there is a risk that one person will dominate and not allow others to participate. Often the loudest and opinionated members will contribute while the quieter individuals will generally not contribute, especially if they are not with their friends.
Each style; Authoritarian/Autocratic, Participative/Democratic, and Delegative Leadership offer time and place applications. The Democratic approach appears to be the most effective approach as the leader is an active participant. Cherry, K. (2016, October 5). Looking more into a leader as a person, Forbes examined qualities that make a great leader highlighting “honesty” as the number one quality of a leader. Additional qualities included communication, positive attitude, and ability to make hard decisions round out the list of essential qualities Prive, T.
Based on the leadership survey, my leadership style is participative in nature. According to Huber (2014), this style of leadership is characteristic of a leader that takes part in completing the assigned task. When I
My style of leadership according to the quiz by Cherry (n.d.) is participative leadership which is a type of leadership that engages the members of the team to participate in decision making and problem solving while the leader makes the final judgment in the deliberation process. This style of leadership allows members who are experts in their fields provide input to reach a more effective and accurate decision. This fits exactly into my leadership style. I always believed that in every aspect there is a greater or lesser person than you are, so, why not focus on the best in others and tap on their expertise in knowledge or skill to get the best results.
If the inputs are seen as used, employees are likely to feel as though they had a positive impact; if the inputs are consistently rejected, employees are likely to feel that their time has been wasted. Participative leaders clearly decentralize authority. Participative decisions are not unilateral, as with the autocrat, because they use
I have done a lot of community service at Moundville Nursing Home from 2007-2014. I answered the phone and I sat with the sick patients. I helped in the kitchen and I would bring their supper to their rooms. I helped fed some of the patients because they couldn’t feed themselves. My favorite was when I volunteered for their Halloween festival. I also helped the nursing home with their trunk-a-treat on Halloween. I would go downtown with them and I would pass out candy to the sweet little kids. The whole Moundville community would come and enjoy themselves. I helped the nursing home with their Christmas parade. I helped decorate and pass out the Christmas gift. I did a great amount of community service at Jefferson Chapel CME Church. I would
Visionary leadership qualities help their project teams understand the true objectives and goals, as well as, how their contributions are important to achieve these goals (Preston, Moon, Simon, & Kossi, 2015). This very statement makes the visionary leadership style my number one go to style and my most beloved way of leading. To take a vision and to be able to correctly motivate and inspire your team with each individual contribution to get a job done and to further your project to the next level is amazing to me. Visionary will be the style I strive to work toward as a future leader. My number two style would be the Democratic style, mainly because Democratic leaders bring individuals together in order for everyone to give their thoughts, ask questions, and be involved in the entire project and its processes (Preston, et al, 2015). Getting teammates involved in all aspects of the project gives them a sense of

I have volunteered at the Salvation Army and have had some wonderful experiences there. For the past years I have been involved in helping children with their homework and I have read books to them. It feels really good when you see the children face expression when they finally get something it is a really good experience. The YMCA is another place I have volunteered, during my volunteering moments at the YMCA I felt like I helped the community so much. During the YMCA we had a chance to volunteer with the children’s hospital to take pictures around the community and write about what it affects us on. This was a great experience because it gave me a chance to speak up not only for me but for other people that probably think the same.
Outside of scouting, I am very involved at various churches around the South Bay area. I have volunteered mostly at Journey of Faith church in Manhattan Beach; serving synonyms if at Vacation Bible School (VBS) during the summer, working the Audio/Visual on Sundays for the middle school and elementary school groups, and even operating the camera during church
I have always been involved in groups that perform community service projects. In fact, I was recently elected to as VP of Public Relations of the Student MOVE group. We are a group of 12 individuals that are the advisory committee for all of the community service organizations on campus, but we organize many alternative activities and events. I even did a service learning project for my Spanish class last semester with Cynthia Wells. I attended the Spanish mass every Sunday, and I was a greeter. I learned their culture and rituals while still attending the usual Catholic Mass.
Throughout my life, I have been fortunate to have many opportunities to take on leadership roles, and to use these roles to influence others in very positive ways. After taking the leadership quizzes or survey, I was able to determine that my personal leadership style is Participative. Participative style is the leadership style where a leader gives team the opportunity to wholly take part in
So what does this definition mean to me? First, it means that leaders who embrace a participative leadership style, values and involves their entire team. Second, it means leaders work closely with their team members, focusing on building relationships and rapport. Lastly, it means that leaders allow their team to assist in the decision making process, accepting their input and allowing them to share their ideas. As a leader, I would incorporate this style of leadership when leading project teams because it creates a level of trust between a leader and its members. In addition, this leadership style creates motivation and empowerment. When team member’s skills are acknowledged and their opinions are being valued, they see how their contributions aid in completing the final project goal and take ownership. This type of leadership also provides higher levels of motivation and better strategies and solutions because a variety of people contribute with different perspectives and ideas. Although the team leader is required to give up some control, I believe that the motivational benefits of doing so are greater than with other leadership styles. According to Lam, Xu & Chan (2015), “many practicing managers acknowledge the potential motivational benefits of participative management practice, and value its performance implications” (p. 836). I would
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
