Short Essay: “The Dreamer,” Junot Diaz “If you can dream it, you can do it,” is a quote that Walt Disney was known for saying. I simple means you can accomplish and reach every one of our dreams if you have the determination to pursue them. This is the main concept behind the essay of “The Dreamer.” By Junot Diaz. The essay/article. Was first written and appeared in More Magazine for women in 2011 (Diaz 128). It is the short story of Junot Diaz’s mother was determination to go to school and get an education despite the punishment she endured and the sacrifice required. The point of this essay in my opinion was to never to give up on your dreams regardless of what you face. Dreams and goals give us purpose and when you follow through with them they can change your life. However all too often we tend to postpone our dreams, or completely give up on our dream even before it can grow. Instead of perusing them we inadvertently place them on Pause. I have dreamed of educating Nursing Students from the moment I graduated Nursing school however it is now 2014 and although I have worked in the Nursing field for 17 years I still today am not at the Educational Level to teach nursing students. Last year I began to ask myself, what is stopping me from really going after that? And after going through the usual scenarios of: “As soon as I have money enough I’ll starts” and “When my kids are grown I’ll start” …show more content…
In essence I was waiting for the perfect moment to go for what I wanted when the truth is, that the perfect time to start was never coming because it never existed.
I was simply waiting and postponing instead of persevering! Determination and perseverance were the key factors that pushed Diaz’s mother toward obtaining the education she so
desired. Perseverance however requires Sacrifice. You have to sacrifice something whether it’s time, money, or other activities. In his essay Junot speaks of his mother’s personal and physical sacrifice in order the attend school stating “… she got down on her knees beside a stagnant puddle of water, put her mouth in it and drank deeply.” His mother choosing to follow her dreams had plans other than working on a field the rest of her life or waiting on a marriage. I believe the essay is an encouraging inspiration written specifically to those with a desire to reach the “unreachable” and are willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Diaz writes that his mother was punished severely, beaten daily, “Your grandmother beat me almost every day,” my mother explained, “but I got my education.” She then ingested stagnant, infested water, in the pursuit of obtaining her goal. He goes on to narrated the sacrifice she made and enviably lived with years later after she reported her mother to authorities with a single phrase, “I want to go to school” The essay is a reminder that anything is possible if you believe it is, that there comes a time when you have to ask yourself “What is reason, that I’m not following my dream?” “What am I waiting for?” And is it possible for me to pursue my dream, even if the moment is not absolutely perfect yet?” When it comes to dreams and goals we have to be more like the author’s mother and work for it not just wish for it! His mother had a plan. The essay says that “{the} family was preparing for its seasonal move up higher into the hills, where the coffee was waiting” “but my mother had other plans. Two days before the move, she got down on her knees beside a stagnant puddle…” For me that means to set a deadline – create a timeline – move forward step by step. This is how I am pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
Generations past guide our futures. The sacrifices and triumphs of our elders shape the environment in which we are born into, how we grow, and where we are today. My great-great-grandmother was able to leave Budapest, Hungary and come to America. My great-grandmother was able to obtain an education that would not have been readily available to her in her homeland. This has allowed me to be born into a free world, where education is the norm. Likewise, in the essay "The Dreamer", Junot Diaz describes the childhood dreams of his mother to obtain an education while living in the third world, rural area of the Dominican Republic. Diaz uses the struggles of his mother
“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” This quote from Walt Disney addressing the concept of achieving dreams is very accurate, and can be seen throughout literature today and in the past. Dreams can give people power or take away hope, and influence how people live their lives based upon whether they have the determination to attack their dreams or not; as seen through characters like the speaker in Harlem by Langston Hughes and Lena and Walter Younger in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in The Sun.
Ever since I was a little girl, my motivation to pursue a career in the medical field was evident. While other children my age watched Cartoon Network, I found more value in shows like ‘Trauma: Life in the ER’ and ‘A Baby Story.’ It wasn’t until high school that I decided I would become a nurse, specifically. I cannot say that I had a revelation or a particular experience that swayed my decision. However, ever since I began pursuing the career of nursing, I discover each and every subsequent day that it is what I was put on this earth to do.
My courses and experience has empowered, and has reinforced my determination to pursue a career as a nurse. I am eager and excited about starting nursing school, and having my dream which started as a young girl to come full circle. I am convinced I am a good candidate because I have the innate drive to complete the program. I am willing to learn and use those skills and knowledge acquired to provide something meaningful to the society and humanity. I have the personal determination to face the challenges and rigors of nursing school. With hard work, perseverance, and determination I believe I have the essential character to be successful as a nursing student and an excellent quality nurse in the near future. A degree in nursing paves ways for other degrees to emerge especially for those interested in furthering their education in health care. I am committed to continue to pursed advanced degree in nursing ultimately becoming a nurse practitioner. . In the next five to ten years from now, I want to write articles and books about nursing and healthcare related. Therefore, I believe that if I improve myself further positively, I will grow from strength to strength and one day my paper will be read in one of the prestigious newsletters, journals, and textbooks. I know the sky is my starting
When I began this journey I knew that Nursing was all I wanted to do and in order to succeed and do well in nursing school, it was going to require a ton of devotion and sacrifice. Nursing school did not come without its challenges, not only did we have to deal with going to class, clinicals, studying for exams, but we also had to add in the factors of jobs, family, marriages, children, sickness and our daily life. But our instructors encouraged us and pushed us to keep going, and for that we are grateful because we all made a decision to stick with it, and here we are today. It seems unimaginable that just a year ago this journey was just beginning, but here we are today a year later,
Dreams are a part of each person’s life that allows them to set goals for their future. One dream may be simple, but others allow them to achieve the impossible. There is that one goal that anyone and everyone wants to
Ever since I was in middle school I dreamed of working in the medical field. I realized nursing was the profession for me when my grandfather became terribly sick with lung cancer during my freshman year of high school. It puzzled me that one of the healthiest and most physically active people I knew could be afflicted by such a damaging disease. After watching my grandfather’s suffering and the pain my entire family felt from his death, I knew I wanted to go into a field to help others that are facing the same challenges. This is when I discovered all of the opportunities that a career in nursing could offer me.
In the United States there is an idea many pursue called the American dream, which differs from person to person. The American dream according to americanradioworks.publicradio.org is “a revolutionary notion: each person has the right to pursue happiness, and the freedom to strive for a better life through hard work and fair ambition”. Yet it has been said there is no real definition of American dream, instead it merely proves that it has an unconscious influence in American mentality (Ştiuliuc 1). The American dream is different for each person because everyone yearns for things that will they hope will in return make them happy. Whatever that may be, each person goes through different struggles to obtain what they want. According to Frederic Carpenter, the American dream “has never been defined exactly, and probably never can be. It is both too various and too vague” (3). The Madonnas of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse depicts the different interpretations on what the American dream actually is through the opinions and actions of Hector Esperanza, Efren Mendoza and Mrs. Calhoun.
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. I now have a rewarding career working as a Medical-Surgical nurse on a Medical University Hospital floor that specializes in Transplant, Nephrology and Urology. Nursing encompasses the ideologies that fuel my passion, upon further research, and conversation with coworkers I realize my career goal of Family Nurse Practitioner; affording me the privilege to care for others by reaching out to various
The essay will conclude by summarising how I will put reflection in practice throughout my future career. The beauty of nursing is it allows me to travel whilst still working in the health care environment. As well as exploring different cultures, I could provide care to individuals in countries where health care is not accessible. Nursing will allow me to explore the world whilst fulfilling a rewarding career.
It’s been my desire, longing for a nursing career since I was in my primary and secondary school. At the age of 12, I began to look after children and baby-sitting then, from there, I gained the understanding of how to deal with children. Nursing is one of the highly demanding careers that bring new challenges every day and it comes with various rewards and a real sense of job satisfaction. I chose nursing because it is a profession where you never really finish learning. It has been my dream job since my tender age. Seeing nurses visiting my school treating students, immunisation, teaching us about health and sexual health issues, this encouraged me. My goal and desire at that age have been to help people within the Health sector. That is how; I decided to go to college where I am currently doing my Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science), which involves Biology and Chemistry. I chose this pathway because I want to gain the relevant skills and knowledge of my career to be. As someone who wants to become a nurse, I found biology as an important role in the delivery of client car...
It was very hard for me to start writing this paper. I was brainstorming with my husband over whom or what inspired me to attend college. I had lots of good ideas why or who helped me reach this point in my life. The morals I grew with, the current economy and the feeling that I had a point to prove was all just part of why choose to attend college. My husband went on to explain to me that all of these things and people were just a factor of why I choose to go back to school and pursue a degree in nursing. In that instance, I realized that it was only me who made the decision to attend college.
We all have a dream, but the difference is how we realise our dream, how we obtain our dream, and how our dream changes us. This is evident in our learning of dreams and aspirations through the texts Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? by Lasse Hallström, and through my own studies of Million Dollar Baby by Clint Eastwood. These three highly acclaimed texts represent the same ideas on dreams and aspirations, which can be defined as hope, desire or the longing for a condition or achievement, but these texts express the same ideas differently, shaping our understanding of dreams and aspirations.
Never, give up. My mother was the eldest daughter in her family. When her father passed away. Her mother began to work immediately to support her family. My mother was quickly put in charge of her younger siblings. She later, dropped out of school in eighth grade to support her family. Although, my mother was given this hard task at such a young age she never gave up. After, raising her siblings she continued her life. She got married, started a family of her own. Eventually, she took night classes to earn her high school diploma. She was not going to give up. She continued her journey she completed the nursing program at the ripe young age of 43. She never let her life get in the way of her dreams. My family always taught me to continue my journey and to never give up.
“Its a picture of the first store I opened in America.” He said. “When me and your grandma finally had enough money to move to America, we decided we should start a business.”
