Baby boomers and Millennials, are they oil & water or two peas in a pod? There have been large shifts in society and culture between when the baby boomers were born (1946-1964) and when the millennials were born (1981-1996). There are many factors that have influenced and molded each of these two generations such as technology, trends, debt and economy. Who exactly are millennials and baby boomers? What I know emphatically is that they both have strong opinions of one another. The Baby Boomers were promised the American Dream; they worked hard and are perceived as greedy and ambitious. The Baby Boomers did not grow up with technology as the central communication component of their lives. They made phone calls on corded rotary dial phones, they wrote letters that were mailed with postage stamps that sometimes took a week to arrive. This communication solidified strong interpersonal skills. As they get older they have become more adaptable to advancing technology by using cell phones and tablets. Millennials are experts in technology and use it in every aspect of their life. The crave new innovations and the next big thing. They are the blog-savvy generation. Millennials marriage to technology has left them with horrible interpersonal skills and, as a result, it is affecting their relationships and depression is becoming all too common. (Dickler) This is primarily the factor that has led to struggles with Millenials. This generation has seen the biggest increase in educational costs. They have also seen that in most cases a degree is the basic qualification for applying to get a job and not even a guarantee. When President Lyndon Johnson signed the Higher Education Act in 1965 the Baby Boomers were starting to enter college. This act allowed them to pay less tution and receive federal and state grants to obtain their degrees. When Baby Boomers graduated from college it offered better and more opportunity for jobs.
Conclusion
The Baby Boomer generation is referred to as the “me” generation wanted their children to be spoiled with every possible option. Like helicopters, they hovered in the background, ready to sweep down, solve crises and offer new destinations. (Setooodeh) The Millenial generation is referred to as the “me, me, me” generation and grew up making the rules because their parents were not authoritative. Their lives are dictated by their smart gadgets and they are living at home longer.
