Stitching is considered a very important skill in India, so important that it is a required course in some schools. Embroidery is a form of stitching used to decorate materials of cloth by using various stitching techniques. It is an interesting form of art because it requires a certain skill set and a lot of practice. I was always fascinated as a little girl at how my grandma would just sit in the corner of the room stitching new clothes or making me little blankets, and how my mom always knew how to fix the button on my shirt and embroider these beautiful patterns on our pillows. Learning to stitch, or more specifically, learning to embroider, and make a plain old cloth into a beautiful piece of work with just a few threads and a needle is a skill I wish to acquire.
Embroidery is important in Indian culture because a majority of our traditional outfits are embroidered creating beautiful designs that add brightness and complexity to the dress, especially on a traditional sari. Or they use embroidery to add beauty to simple household items like a pillow or towel. It’s important to me because it is part of my culture and that I should carry on the tradition of knowing how to stitch like my grandma and my mother.Three topics will be discussed in this research paper; the history of embroidery, the purpose of embroidery, and the different techniques used in embroidery.
Embroidery is an art form that is used to decorate clothing and fabrics with designs and make them more colorful. Embroidery involves the detailed stitching of designs on fabrics that may include beads, pearls, small mirrors, and other material that make the piece of clothing more lavish (Morris). ...et. But on the other hand, my cousin’s family that lives in another region of India prays more to the snake god, so they might embroider snakes or anything else that represents that god.
Embroidery also has other functions other than making the clothing more attractive such as self-expression, spiritual awareness, and making the cloth stronger and more durable, especially if the cloth is going to be used for everyday wear, labor work, or household work (Tanttila). The embroidery on the clothing also depends on what the clothing will be used for. For example, a typical Indian wedding sari would have heavy embroidery with lots of designs, small beads, and a great amount of detail because it is a very important occasion. On the other hand, clothing worn at home would have less embroidery so that it is not as heavy and is more convenient to do household or other work.

Egyptians mummies have been found with stained hair and nails, the reddish brown tones of henna. The Egyptians were convinced that body art smoothed the journey ahead. Henna was believed to have originated in Persia. Marilyn Cvitanic Ph.D. explains, “It grew extensively in Egypt and was carried to India where it was used since at least 700 AD for decorating hands and feet.” (http://www.habiba.org/culture.html, Paragraph 2). Henna was also brought over to other countries and used differently all around the world. It was common to see henna-covered hands and feet in India. In fact, henna was so commonly used that it had 60 names in 43 different
The history of sewing machines started with someone’s need, which so many others felt they needed, too. Sewing machines made the lives of housewives much easier. Sewing by hand took long hours and was not productive. Many girls would have to learn how to sew at a young age in order to know how to sew once they were married.
At first glance at the book, Embroideries I thought it was going to be boring. This small book is very deceiving, the uncolorful pages without numbers, the simplistic drawings without gutters and non-traditional page layouts packs a powerful message. The author and artist Marjane Satrapi was born in Rasht, Iran to a middle-class family and educated in France. She introduces you into her hysterical family that any culture could relate to. Embroideries is a satirical graphic novel of the women of an Iranian family.
Quilting is a hobby of mine that has been around since the ancient Egyptians. Quilting is the process of stitching three pieces of fabric together, usually two pieces of fabric sand witching some sort of padding. I have been sewing since I was about seven years old and got my first sewing machine when I was about ten. My grandma taught me how to sew first by hand and then I got to move up to her machine until I got my own.
A: Tapestry is an ancient technique of weaving. The pattern is sections of colored weft threads beaten down onto warp threads. Tapestries were hung to show a person's wealth. For example, King Henry VIII had over 2,000 tapestries throughout his many palaces. They were hung in churches, castles, and places for the wealthy people (Victoria and Albert Museum). Most tapestries contained historical content that told memorable stories. In some cases, multiple tapestries were hung side by side to create a visual picture that could be read (The Art Institute of Chicago).
Anne Whitney was well known for her full figured portraits of suffragist and protesters leaders, she communicated her feminist and abolitionist view through her sculpture. Whitney accomplished portrait statues of prominent suffragists such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garrison, and Lucy Stone. The Lady Godiva statue shows lines, texture, and pattern from what I can observe as visual elements. The statue contains lines to outline the stitches in her dress. The texture of the statue is overall smooth, and the embroidery pattern can be seen on her veil, which is wrapped around her arm. I also noticed that Whitney used principle of design in her statue; Whitney was well known for her life-sized marble figures, so therefore scale played
Today, when you walk down just about any populated street, any busy hallway, or take a seat on any public bus, there’s a good chance what someone’s wearing might catch your eye for a number of reasons, maybe a strong message or a beautiful design. Weaving is a common thread among cultures around the world. Weaving is a way of producing cloth or textile. Today we have machines that weave large-scale textiles at cheap prices. Production of cloth by hand is rarely engaged in today’s Westernized societies. Not many people are thinking about how the fibers are actually constructed to make their clothes. However, in other cultures across the world the tradition of weaving still exists. By comparing three cultures that continue weaving as a part of their tradition we can see similarities and the differences between them. The reasons that each culture still weaves vary, as do the methods and materials. The desired characteristics of the cloth also vary around the world as each culture values different aesthetics.
In ancient times, mankind used to stitch animal skins for clothing and shelter. Thread in the form of leafs or long fur fibres of animals after twisting and needle made of bone was used for stitching. Weaving of cloth, introduction of line, silk and cotton threads and sewing machine put the stitching to a new level. The production of garments from tailor shop to mills started with industrial revolution [1]. Fabric and thread are two major elements of an apparel. Although thread have less than 1/1000th of its weight but still it is responsible for more half of the performance of apparel.[2] Life of apparel is equal to the minimum life of its any element. Thread is used to form stitches which helps in holding
