When you think of popular music in the United States of America, what artists come to mind? Many would say Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber or perhaps Ed Sheeran. However, popular music is more than just the “pop idols” of the 21st century. From folk protest to country to jazz and rock n’ roll, these genres have shaped the United States of America and American taste in music. On the rise in the United States is electronic dance music. While it has been around in some form for many decades, and has been wildly popular in Europe, electronic dance music or “EDM” has only recently increased in popularity in the United States. Due to the ever changing definition of popular music, electronic dance music should be considered a popular music due to its …show more content…
Massive popularity, wide appeal, mass distribution, and made by the people for the people.
Electronic dance music has emerged as a collection of genres that fall in this category, mainly started by it’s explosion and convergence with “pop” music that dominates radios today. Electronic dance music however, is so much more than that. Critiques of electronic dance music fail to recognize the broad spectrum of the types of EDM that exist and the culture that brings hundreds of thousands of people together. While it may not be traditional in the way that many musicians would consider music to fall under the sacred term, it has created a movement bigger than anyone could have imagined even twenty years ago.
Electronic dance music is a broad term covering many different genres and subgenres of percussive electronic music. It has redefined what music means by utilizing electronic components such as synthesizers, computer software, sampling and music not created by voice or instruments. Techniques used in electronic dance music can be traced back all the way to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Electronic music before the 1960’s was primary experimental, but early examples of electronic dance music include Jamaican dub, disco music of Giorgio Moroder and the electronic music of Kraftwerk in the

With newer sharing platforms like soundcloud, youtube, and spotify music sharing is easier and more widespread than ever. These platforms give emerging disc jockeys a shot at becoming popular in the ever growing type of music. The different platforms give artists an opportunity to reach many and many types of audiences. They can post their albums on iTunes or Spotify and then their more dedicated listeners can find special editions or remixes of their songs on Soundcloud, while others can watch full recordings of their shows on Youtube. Whatever way their audiences want to listen to their music they can. Either way, it is destined to be
A number of other genres, throughout the decade, maintained a significant following. One genre that was slow to start was Hip-Hop, while it emerged in the 1970’s it didn’t become significant until the late 1980’s. Although Classical music began to lose impetus, it gave way to a new generation of composers through invention and theoretical development. The decade was also distinguished for its assistance to electronic music, which rose in reco...
Earlier this year (DATE???) alt-rockers Cake topped the Billboard 200 chart with their first album in seven (???) years, Showroom of Compassion. The album sold 44,000 copies the first week of its release, a record low for the number one hit. At the same time, Britney Spears' single “Hold It Against Me” scaled the digital song chart with 411,000 copies sold. The two charts illustrate the change in the way we listen to music. The Internet—as it did for almost everything—has radically affected the way people get music.
The Use of Electronic Technology in 20th and 21st Century Music In this essay, I have examined the use of electronic technology within 20th and 21st Century music. This has involved analysis of the development and continuing refinement of the computer in today’s music industry, as well as the theory of the synthesiser and the various pioneers of electronic technology, including Dr. Robert Moog and Les Paul. Also within the essay, I have discussed the increasing use of computers in the recording studio. The computer has become an indispensable tool in ensuring that both recording and playback sound quality is kept at the maximum possible level. Many positive ideas have come from the continued onslaught of computerisation.
In this essay I intend to explore what is meant by the terms popular culture and high culture. I will also look at how the relationship between these two terms has become distorted and blurred over time. In order to reinforce what I am saying about popular and high culture I will be using a range of examples from the music industry to show how the line between high culture and popular culture has become ambiguous. I will also call upon the work of John Storey to give my work an academic foundation. Although Storey is the main academic I will be looking at, I will also include references to a number of other academics who have written about popular culture and high culture.
Music is something that in modern society is typically appreciated more than it is analyzed. Most individuals when listening to music can’t name the different elements that can be found in a song. However, when one examines a song it's easy to find what elements in each song or genre that appeals to them. In fact, when discovering what elements are in each song it can create a further appreciation for that type of music. When examining the musical style of certain genres or songs one gains a new insight in to music and allows them to better understand musical thought.
Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built. In Detroit, techno resulted from the melding of African American music including Chicago house, funk, electro, and electric jazz with electronic music by artists such as Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, and Yellow Magic Orchestra. Stylistically, techno is generally repetitive instrumental music, often produced for use in a continuous DJ set. Many producers use retro electronic musical devices to create what they consider to be an authentic techno sound. Drum machines from the 1980s such as Roland's TR-808 and TR-909 are highly prized, and
Hip Hop and Rock music are today’s people choice of music. People will find that teens and adults from the age of 20 to 34 listen to these two types of music. Not too often will you see or hear a teen listening to Blues, Opera, Reggae, or Oldies. Reason being is that they were raised up in toady’s society where really all they will here is either Hip Hop or Rock. There is a lot of argument that these two different types of music are the same old sing about money, drugs, and sex. But actually they are tot...
In today’s evolving and changing society, many people do not appreciate how extraordinary music truly is. Since the birth of the vinyl record, there are less people who own and are interested in them. Even though vinyl records have recently been making a comeback, they are still not as popular as they once were. People take for granted how easily accessible music is today though in the past it was not as simple. Even though vinyl records may be costly and may not have a large quantity of songs, as time progresses and technology continues to develop, the way that people listen to music degrades their appreciation for music due to easier accessibility, weaker sound in terms of quality, and decaying genres.
Consumers now-a-days have so many different platforms that they are able to listen to music on, that the loyalty to one specific medium is extremely low. Substitute options are immense, but having a celebrity do a daily talk show only on your service will drive many consumers to purchase the subscription. The reason for this is because it is very rare that one type of music or song will be limited to a platform; but by signing a contract with these on-air personalities, it can give you exclusive rights to their content making other options obsolete if consumers want to listen to
Music and the relationships of music have changed drastically in our society. The course of studies and the evaluations of the applications of the technology of music, the making and the listening of music have changed in the way we listen to music, the styles of music in our society and in the media. The music performed by DJs at EDM festivals consist of remixed songs and some that are original. The beats, bass, and rhythms are what people seem to really enjoy about this type of music, myself included. Because EDM is so different from conventional music, it is in some ways, breaking normal conventions that surround “typical” music. For example, some songs focus so much on the bass and sound, that there are no lyrics or singing at all. Although this aspect can be said about other genres of music, EDM is still quite different. Over the past few years, EDM has slowly started to enter mainstream music as well. Perhaps, this has helped with the surge of EDM festival popularity. Although the festivals are now quite large, one of the most popular festivals, EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival), took quite a few years to gain the popularity it has today. The popularity of these festivals has also lead to EDC festivals being held in Europe, Mexico, and other countries.
By first understanding the purpose behind Billboard’s music popularity lists and the methodology through which a song’s ranking is determined on The Hot 100, we garner greater trust and sense of accuracy in the list’s ranking. After establishing The Billboard Hot 100 as an optimal framework to launch the investigation on popular music in the United States, I will discuss my personal research. Additionally, in areas of research in which my findings make evident that a more comprehensive approach is necessary, I will supplement my data with research conducted by other
With the music being the highly profitable, capitalist enterprise that it is today, it is no wonder that it is controlled and regulated by a few large conglomerates that exist is today’s world. It is important to make clear that although evidence is being presented of the positive aspects of globalization through music that there is overwhelming evidence that cultural imperialism is more than it seems on the outside. One must keep in mind that cultural imperialism, globalization and the creation of a global village is a business. People are profiting at other people’s loss of cultural identity, they are sold a culture and heritage. With the every growing N’Sync fan clubs and Britney clones, the world is turning into a stage for pop culture and its glamorous unattainable standards.
Dancing is the freedom of movement to music which ultimately leads to freedom of emotion, allowing an individual to express themselves in their own unique way by moving to a certain piece of music or songs and melodies that are multi-dimensional. It serves as a powerful form of communication and gives choreographers the opportunity to drive the creative process by experiencing and developing movement and sequences to famously composed musical pieces. Therefore, this explains why music and dance often go hand in hand with each other, working together to tell a beautiful story.
Electronic music is music that employs both electronic and digital musical instruments. It also employs circuitry-based music technology within the music. There are multiple subgenres. A few examples of subgenres are Electronic Dance Music (EDM), House Music, and Dance Music. Electronic music uses synthesizers along with other instruments such as drums, guitars, and pianos to produce a synthetic sound. This synthetic sound makes electronic music stand out from other genres of music.
