There are a plethora of factors that contribute to a song’s popularity. Behind every song, there is a singer. Behind every singer, (or, at least in most cases) there is a writer who crafts a set of lyrics, a composer who develops sequences of notes, a record company which manages and releases the album, a manager who helps develop a singer’s persona in the public-eye and who coordinates events to the give the singer opportunities to expand their fame. Within each song, there is a rhythmic tempo, a single musical instrument or combination, and different combinations of volume and silence. By first understanding the purpose behind Billboard’s music popularity lists and the methodology through which a song’s ranking is determined on The Hot 100, we garner greater trust and sense of accuracy in the list’s ranking. After establishing The Billboard Hot 100 as an optimal framework to launch the investigation on popular music in the United States, I will discuss my personal research. The Hot 100 debuted in 1958, and has released a weekly publication through some form of publically accessible media for all weeks since its conception (RESOURCE). The Hot 100 was Billboard magazine’s first unified, all-encompassing music popularity list (SOURCE). Throughout its lifetime, Billboard has featured 28 different kinds of music popularity lists. Billboard continues to release various music popularity lists as they are driven by a primary goal: “It is our goal at Billboard to accurately portray, in an unbiased manner, how music performs relative to other music”
