Snapchat Snapchat is a social media app that allows users to send pictures that disappear after a time limit set by sender (from one to ten seconds). Once the timer runs out the image is supposed to be deleted forever. This app has become incredibly popular in the past couple of years, especially among teenagers. It’s unique feature is what attracted users the most. It’s not about getting likes or for people to publicly tell you “you look gorgeous girl” and for everyone to see. Such was the case of Ohio high school student, Jesse Logan, who sent nude photos to her boyfriend who then sent them to other students who harassed her until she committed suicide.2 Currently, there are laws in place against minors sexting and sexting to minors and they fall under the child pornography category. While the laws are intended to protect minors from sexual predators, what most minors do not understand is that they are subject to them as well. This means that, if fifteen-year-old Timmy decides to sext his fifteen-year-old girlfriend, Sarah, a naked picture of himself, both Timmy and Sarah could be tried in court on charges of disseminating child pornography and possessing child pornography. These serious charges can result in having to register as a sex offender for several years, although the message may have been sent and received consensually by both parties. That is a lot of information and content, such as photos, messages, videos, private information like addresses and more, for one company to hold. These self-destructing pictures are causing a majority of teenagers to think that it doesn’t matter what you share with others on the internet because it’s going to disappear and be gone forever. But does it actually just vanish? It is viewed that those who participate in sexting are part of a deviant subculture. There are three criteria for child pornography; (1) the child gets to be hurt in the proses of making. (2) Signs of struggle have to be present. (3) The legal guardian of the child is forcing them to take pictures or make videos of sexual behavior. When a teen is sexting pictures none of these criteria are meet. The pictures are took and sent voluntarily, there is not enough evidence to say that the teens are pressured into taking the picture from there partner.

Technology has opened the door to a vast amount of information and to the ability to relay that information to practically anybody at anytime and anywhere. People are constantly checking their email, updating their status on Facebook, sending tweets on Twitter, instant messaging, and texting. The debate of whether the use of social networking is a negative or positive aspect is a continuous one. In the case of Steven Pinker, his essay “Mind over Mass Media” argues that media technologies have a positive effect on mental development. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.

Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. However, depending on the severity of the post serious repercussions could be in order. If someone posts an inappropriate picture of themselves or others that might be deemed pornography or sexual harassment and or assault, jail time could be a possibility. “The personal information revealed by teenagers on these sites also attracts sexual predators” (Barnes 1). Posting private personal details online is an open door to allow predators to stalk. “There have been a number of reports of sexual predators locating victims through social networking sites” (Barnes 1). Inappropriate posts can result in people losing their jobs or getting denied hire due to content on their social media profiles. Teenagers can also be denied entry into a college or if currently enrolled, get kicked out of school when an inappropriate post surfaces.
