This school district has seemingly dealt with the race issue for months, according to Tyrone Nelson. When a black student played a song over the school’s PA system featuring a word that represents a period of hardship and slavery for all blacks in America, he managed to escape with an apology. Would a white student have received the same mercy had he or she done something this offensive? When the student-produced video – speciously meant to stimulate “honest conversation”– played for the entire school, Nelson was quick to defend the action, saying that we cannot change American history, and that we need to talk about it at some point. I do not feel that active regressively, especially on such a controversial issue, can really bear an honest
discussion. It is impossible to explain the deep-seeded tension between blacks and whites in America in five minutes; the issue is far more complex than generations of whites handing down larger and larger sums of cash, as the video suggested. Now that all the students have seen the video, the parents are upset. Was such a clip meant to show the disparity in America, or were there ulterior motives behind the short cartoon? Apparently, over a thousand people have expressed an interest in spending well over 100,000 dollars to change the name of the school. We need to be pragmatic about this and focus on actually educating the kids in this school, because as Lisa Marshall said, “These are difficult times…our resources are already insufficient”.
Throughout the American South, of many Negro’s childhood, the system of segregation determined the patterns of life. Blacks attended separate schools from whites, were barred from pools and parks where whites swam and played, from cafes and hotels where whites ate and slept. On sidewalks, they were expected to step aside for whites. It took a brave person to challenge this system, when those that did suffered a white storm of rancour. Affronting this hatred, with assistance from the Federal Government, were nine courageous school children, permitted into the 1957/8 school year at Little Rock Central High. The unofficial leader of this band of students was Ernest Green.
The Ocean Hill Brownsville school controversy was a case study of race relations during the 1960’s. This predominantly black area wished to have jurisdiction over their schools’ operations and curricula. In 1967, the superintendent of schools granted Ocean Hill Brownsville “community control” of their district. The Board of Education’s action was part of a new decentralization policy that wanted to disperse New York City’s political powers locally. Once in place, the Unit Administrator, Rhody McCoy, fired several teachers inciting one of the most profound racial standoffs in the city’s history. The evolution of the national civil rights movement parallels the changing attitudes of blacks involved in Ocean Hill Brownsville. In addition, evidence of differing theories concerning assimilation to the American ethnicity is portrayed through the actions of the participants.
Before the decision of Brown v. Board of Education, many people accepted school segregation and, in most of the southern states, required segregation. Schools during this time were supposed to uphold the “separate but equal” standard set during the 1896 case of Plessy v. Ferguson; however, most, if not all, of the “black” schools were not comparable to the “white” schools. The resources the “white” schools had available definitely exceed the resources given to “black” schools not only in quantity, but also in quality. Brown v. Board of Education was not the first case that assaulted the public school segregation in the south. The title of the case was shortened from Oliver Brown ET. Al. v. the Board of Education of Topeka Kansas. The official titled included reference to the other twelve cases that were started in the early 1950’s that came from South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware and the District of Columbia. Nikole Hannah-Jones, the author of the article “School Segregation, the Continuing Tragedy of Ferguson,” (2014) writes about how the Normandy school district in which Ferguson students attend, ranked at the very bottom of all Missouri schools for performance. As relayed by Hannah-Jones (2014), the Normandy school district is “among the poorest and most segregated in Missouri” (p. 2). The August 2014 shooting death of a young African-American, Michael Brown, by a white police officer, spurred riots not only in St. Louis, but also in other cities nationwide. “Simple Justice” was written by Richard Kluger and reviews the history of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that outlawed segregation, and African America’s century-long struggle for equality under law. It began with the inequities of slavery to freedom bells to the forcing of integration in schools and the roots of laws with affect on African Americans. This story reveals the hate caused the disparagement of African Americans in America over three hundred years. I learned how African Americans were ultimately acknowledged by their simple justice. The American version of the holocaust was presented in the story. In 1954 the different between how segregation and slavery were not in fashion when compared with dishonesty of how educating African American are separate from Caucasian was justified by the various branches of government.
Last summer, my then twelve year old son was asked to participate in the National Junior Leaders Conference in Washington, DC. So, I packed our stuff and we headed for our nation's capital. While there, we visited the Supreme Court and my son, never having been there before, was simply awed. A short time later, we went to the Library of Congress. At the time (I don't know whether or not it's still there), there was a display -- three or four rooms big dedicated to the Supreme Court case Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. While the case was something that Nicholas (my son) and I had talked about on a few occasions, it was interesting to watch him as he navigated through the rooms that had photographs, court documents, newspaper articles, and other memorabilia of the case and the people involved with it. About thirty minutes into our time there, he started to cry softly, but he continued making his way through the display. He went to every single display in those several rooms; he didn't want to leave until he had seen everything and read everything. When we finally left (almost four hours after we arrived), he said to me, "It's disgraceful the way our country treated black people; there was no honor in any of it."
During the 60’s and 70’s, people have thrashed out with their words and each other. This caused some awareness in schools due to the offensiveness of the matter. During the 80’s schools began on focusing on preventing this kind of speech on their campuses. Since then, students have become more and more sensitive in a negative way. The authors used an example of a kid shouting “Shut up, you water buffalo” at an Israeli born student. That incident made national news, just for calling another kid a “water buffalo.” Another example is when a university found a student guilty of racial harassment for reading a book honoring student opposition to the Ku Klux Clan. The picture on the cover of the book offended one of the student’s co-workers. Just because the student was reading a book, minding his own business, the student was punished from the university. Never said anything or hurt anyone physically, and his education was ruined by someone taking offense to a book he was reading. This historic broadcast, in which Mississippians for the first time were presented a black perspective on segregation and civil rights, has never been located. Nonetheless, recordings of irate reactions by Mississippians slurred with racist epithets, “What are you people of Mississippi going to do? Just stand by a let the nigger take over. They better get his black ass off or I am gonna come up there and take it off” (Pinkston, 2013), have been found preserved at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Carter G. Woodson, the father of Black History once wrote, “If you can control a man's thinking you do not have to worry about his action. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to concern yourself about what he will do”. During the 19th and early 20th centuries segregation in American public schools was part of the norm and many black schools were inferior to white schools. In the early 1950s, Brown v. Board of Education, a poignant case in the fight for the desegregation of schools was presented to the U.S District Court for the District of Kansas. The defense ruled that “segregated schools simply prepared black children for the segregation they would face during adulthood.” After great deliberation, the court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs banishing the “separate but equal” rule, making it unethical to allow segregation in public schools. Desegregation did not integrate the schools, instead it removed the educational curricula for schools, paralyzing the educational system and victimizing children both black and white. This desegregation created a new kind of segregation, one that will determine the future of young minds and undermine the ability of minority children branding them average or low-achieving. In the struggle for quality education, school professionals and experts limit educational progressiveness using tracking and no child left behind.
This subtle racism relates back to the concept of the Dream as well. As Coates states “Very few Americans will directly proclaim that they are in favor of black people being left on the streets. But a very large number of Americans will do all they can to preserve the Dream.” The subtle racism that exists in the school system is designed to keep African Americans below white Americans. It doesn’t plainly do it, but the intent is in the language. No one directly proclaims that schools are designed to sanctify the failure and destruction of black lives, but a large number of educators will speak of “personal responsibility” when the system fails African Americans. This language is an example of subtle racism. It implies that the African Americans students are less qualified, less responsible, and less worthy than their white peers. And when the system does fail black students, white American will say it tried it’s best. White American would distance itself from the years of history that put African Americans in such a disadvantaged position to begin with. Coates says this distancing from subtle racism is equally intentional as the distancing from obvious racism. As Coates states, “The heirs of those Virginia planters could never directly acknowledge their legacy or reckon with it’s power.” He also suggests that when white Americans do acknowledge history, especially in regards to the success of previous black people, it’s always in token situations. It’s always in token situations where the history books spoke of black people only as sentimental “firsts” — the first black five star general, the first black congressmen, first black mayor, first black president. This “tokenization” of blacks is subtlety racist. Sure you acknowledge the achievements, but it is less about the achievement and more about the fact that it was the first person of a specific color to do something. That diminishes
The American society, more so, the victims and the government have assumed that racism in education is an obvious issue and no lasting solution that can curb the habit. On the contrary, this is a matter of concern in the modern era that attracts the concern of the government and the victims of African-Americans. Considering that all humans deserve the right to equal education. Again, the point here that there is racial discrimination in education in Baltimore, and it should interest those affected such as the African Americans as well as the interested bodies responsible for the delivery of equitable education, as well as the government. Honesty and integrity are very important in the medical field. We as healthcare workers are given such trust and responsibility. We should always strive to do our best and when faced with tough situations. When we don't always know what to do or the proper way to react we should always be honest. Let our superiors know what is going on and ask for advice when we need to. This would show that we are honest. When we come into contact with patients they rely on us to do the right thing and always perform our job with integrity. Often people’s lives are in our hands. We have to care about the patient and care about our job in order to continue to provide quality care. If someone hates their job they are not going to give their best in every way they can. The medical field is not a place for that person.
Honesty is a characteristic that everyone should possess. However, being honest is a difficult task for many people. Living honestly means allowing a person’s true self to be exposed to others. Honesty is considered owning up to one’s wrongdoings and not lying, cheating, or stealing. Being honest is a trait that many people believe is obsolete. Even though every person interprets honesty differently, it all stems back to telling the truth. Being honest allows a person to earn respect from their peers. Honesty is allowing oneself to be completely exposed by being truthful.
