Mike Alsford said, “To be heroic does not have to mean possessing the ability to stand against the evils of the world, either well or successfully, but just that one is willing to stand.” Courage alone to sacrifice oneself to fight for the right cause is heroic. Most people do not have the mental or physical ability to oppose corruption head on. Heroes have certain traits and qualities that define them differently from others. When there seems to be no hope, heroes are the ones that sacrifices themselves for the lives of others, make changes to bring light in the world, and are brave during dark times. A major quality of a hero is the altruistic act of sacrificing their own safety for another’s life. Examples where heroes give up their own well-being to protect others are portrayed in real life situations and countless fictional texts. Real life and fiction both show examples of this attribute. For example, Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist, joined the army during WWII. He refused to carry a gun, and during his time in combat he did not kill a single enemy soldier. After Germany had surrendered, Desmond’s division repeatedly attempted to capture Maeda Escarpment, Japan’s last remaining barrier from an allied invasion. After a sudden and harsh counterattack, officers ordered a retreat. Desmond did not obey orders to retreat to safety, but stayed behind to rescue his wounded fellow soldiers that were left to die. He was determined to rescue as many of his men as he could, before he died trying. On that day, due to his valor and unwavering determination he was able to singlehandedly save 75 lives.
