Depression is a disorder affecting mood and general outlook. Sometimes called “the blues,” it’s considered by a loss of interest in activities or feeling sad and down. People of any age and life situation can have depression. (Gabbey, 2014) Depression is a very common worldwide disorder that often goes unnoticed. It is defined as a collection of specific symptoms associated with impairment. (Prof Anita Thapar, 2012) This issue is very common in low income and middle income countries. Depression can cause many issues with social lives and education. This disorder can also cause increased use of smoking, drug abuse and obesity to name a few. (pg. 8-9) These reasons alone are why depression should be treated right away. According to Gain Andrews, …show more content…
It is the standard cause of disability in developed countries. Unlike infectious and perinatal, disorders depression has not decreased, but it has instead increased over the years. (pg.1) Most people who suffer from depression can go on to live healthy and happy lives with treatment. (Gabbey, 2014) Although there are several possible causes of depression, the actual cause of depression is unknown. There or some people who are more vulnerable to depressive episodes than others. (Gabbey, 2014) Causes of depression can be genetic, situational, biochemical, hormonal and seasonal or caused by neurotransmitters in the brain. Depression may be inherited and the chances are very likely that a person will have depression if a family member has. Some psychiatrist look at brain chemistry for causes of depression because people may have noticeable changes in their brains. Neurotransmitters such as: serotonin dopamine, and norepinephrine affect the imbalance of happiness and pleasure in humans. Antidepressants help to balance this issue. Many changes in hormones such as: childbirth, thyroid problems and menopause could cause depression. In the winter months people tend to be …show more content…

Depression is much more common than most people think. Because it is essentially an invisible illness and is largely in the mind, it is difficult to correctly diagnose it and most people suffer for months, years, or even decades with depression. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines depression as “a mood disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty with thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal thoughts or an attempt to commit suicide.” Most medical definitions are able to explain what happens and why it does, but after carefully examining this one, we only notice that it explains what happens, but not why. Usually, the symptoms of an illness are...
Depression is a psychological disease. It is one of the most common mental illnesses (Blais, et al., 2013). Depression was known since antiquity. Hippocrates diagnosed it in fourth century BC (McNamara and Horan, 1986). After World War II, depression was described as “aggression turned inward” (McNamara & Horan, 1986). Now there is Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, which is designed to evaluate how severe is depression (Gibbons et al., 2012).
There are multiple causes of depression and some scientists have argued that although hopelessness is a symptom, it can also be a cause. Along with that, other causes of depression include low brain levels of serotonin and norepinephrine. It would seem that there isn’t one sole cause of depression, but a combination of factors, at times involving a person’s genes, their biochemical environment, personal experience and psychological factors.
Depression is sometimes mistaken as the typical sad feeling all humans get once in a while. However, the distinct difference between depression and those typical sad feelings are that depression is long-term whereas feeling sad is short-term. Depression is a mental illness that should be taken seriously as this illness can affect the individual emotionally and physically, and impair the daily life. So what is it that causes depression? This is the big question psychologists try to answer through research but their explanations do not explain how those who face one of those factors, only a few are able to avoid developing depression. Everyone thinks and behaves differently, but there are specific personal factors such as one’s negative personalities, chronic illnesses, and substance abuse that causes each individual to respond in a similar and certain way, thus causing them to be prone to developing a depressive disorder. Low self-esteem and negative personality styles can cause depression due to its negative influences on the individual’s mind. Chronic illnesses triggers depression due to its biological and psychological effects. Lastly, substance abuse affects an individual’s mood, personal life, and health causing vulnerability to developing depression.
Researchers believe that it is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, which may be hereditary or caused by different events in a person’s life. Most types of depression seem to run in families with any problems. Many illnesses have specific medical causes and have straightforward treatment, but depression is more complicated then with any other illness because you can not cure it with surgery. One of the causes of depression can occur with “social factors such as loneliness which can be a break up with a boyfriend or girlfriend or a death of a relative or friend” (Curtis). It can be any type of family history conflicts such as anyone within the family or any child abuses. An early child abuse can lead to it or it can be heredity if a family member has been through it. Money can be another issue towards depression people lose their jobs. Once they lose their job they get stressed out and at times feel depressed because they don’t have sufficient amount of money for themselves or their family to support them such as food, clothing, rent, and payments. “Depression can be a temporary response to many situations and stresses” ( Major). Sex hormones may
The American Psychiatric Association (2016) defines depression as a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Many people associate
Depression is a mental health condition that causes feelings of sadness, loss, anger and/or frustration that interferes with daily life from days, to weeks, or months. It’s also known that depression can change the way you see yourself, other people, and life. There isn’t an exact cause for depression yet but it’s believed that chemical changes in the brain are the source. It can also be in your genes, but it’s thought that it could be both chemical changes and in your genes. Any person of any age can develop depression. Certain causes include: alcohol or drug abuse, medical conditions such as underactive thyroid, cancer, or chronic pain, medications (ex: steroids,) sleeping problems, and stressful live events including—but not limited to—death,
The exact causes of depression seem to differ immensely, but there are some who believe that it maybe caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or that it may even be hereditary. Still there are others who believe that it is a combination of social, biological, emotional, psychological, and economical influences that may cause someone who has no family history of depression to develop even a mild case of depression.
When you hear the word depression most think of feeling down or sad, but usually you don’t think of it as a mental illness or disease. In today’s society we hide depression from others because we feel it is not acceptable to be sad, or to let others know that we have faults. Depression is a darkness that can overwhelm you, it can take your happiness away and replaces it with negative thoughts. Many people use depression to attract attention, which gives depression a bad reputation. Depression is not just a sad feeling or an attention seeker like society thinks, it is a serious mental illness that is common in many Americans, makes it difficult to live in a normal way, can be life threatening, and with the proper help is treatable.
First thing I going to talk about is the many causes of depression. First off there is abuse, which can range anywhere from emotional, mental, to physical. If someone is abused in any way it can make them feel worthless or make them feel like the deserve the abuse cause they view themselves as failures, which isn’t ever really the case. Second there’s serious illnesses that can cause depression. For example cancer, autism, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy. There are millions of people in the world who have “regular” to life threatening illnesses. They are the poster children of depression due to the fact it delays their mobility, the cant do things normal people can do, they have to take a substantial amount of medication, and so many more reasons. All these setbacks depresses them and makes them feel like a lower human being who always needs taken care of. Third there’s death and loss that can cause depression. If someone loses someone very close to them (whether it has to do with death or just a permanent
There are many people in the world who are struggling with the disease depression. Depression is the state in which a person feels very sad, hopeless and unimportant. The thing about depression is that it affects both genders and any ages. Depression is something that deserves full attention. For many reasons doctors believe that when a person has depression, they have to start taking medication for it as if medications help. People are becoming more dependent on antidepressants when there are other techniques for dealing with depression.
It may even come abruptly, happening in just a few weeks or days. Nervous breakdowns are commonly associated with depression and are often identified due to the confusion and fear that depression brings. Depression heavily influences emotions and one’s outlook on life and more than often ends up changing a person’s life in a major way. People experiencing depression often feel sad every day and cry very often, making that too another daily routine. Even when participating in activities that used to bring joy, people begin to lose interest and begin secluding themselves from people and things they love. Depression still exists in the teen population and recently has begun increasing in numbers. Reports of depression in teenagers have shown different signs from those of adults. Physical complaints are very common in the younger crowd, including stomachaches and headaches. It also leads to or is in correlation with eating disorders or abnormality, social withdrawal, and of course, depressed mood. They may feel unenthusiastic about school and other activities. Their sleeping patterns become irregular and unhealthy, they may sleep more, but still feel an extreme lack of energy or enthusiasm. Elderly people with depression usually complain of physical rather than emotional
Depression doesn’t just come from one single cause, but instead, “likely results from a combination of genetic, biochemical, environmental, and psychological factors (NIMH: 1)”. The National Institute of Mental Health also goes on to say that “subsequent depressive episodes may occur with or without obvious triggers (NIMH: 1)”. Different from what the Nation Institute of Mental Health says, Access Science, and encyclopedia of science and technology states that depression is caused by at least one occurrence of clinical depression that can happen at earlier ages. Other causes are cardiovascular disease, chronic illnesses, severe life events, and the abuse of drugs and alcohol (AccessScience: 1).
The body is regulated by a variety of chemical secretions and hormones, specifically neurotransmitters and hormones such as those secrete during puberty. In the body neurotransmitters are key chemicals in the brain that affect how brain cells communicate with one another. These hormones and neurotransmitters play important roles in regulating moods and behavior, which is why they could lead to depression in teenagers (Teen depression). Imbalances in these neurotransmitters cause improper communication between brain cells which results in altered behaviors and moods. Usually this disproportion leads to an unhappy mood, also known as depression. Another component of biological factors includes hormones. Hormones in the body significantly fluctuate throughout the duration of puberty, resulting in modifying moods of young adults. In an article issue by the Canary Club, it
A famous author John Green said, “Whenever you read a cancer booklet or website or whatever they list depression among the side effects of cancer. But, in fact, depression is not a side effect of cancer. Depression is a side effect of death (“The Only Thing Worse”).” Occasional bad moods or acting out is to be expected, but depression is something different. Depression can destroy the very essence of a teenager’s personality, causing an overwhelming sense of sadness, despair, or anger (“A Guide for Parents”). The depression rate in the teen’s generation is rising every day. Teenage depression is not just bad moods and occasional melancholy; it’s a serious problem that impacts every aspect of a teen’s life (“A Guide for Parents”). To better understand why teens are depressed, it would help to know the causes of depression, such as, trauma, life experiences, and social anxiety or peer pressure.
