Causes of Depression Depression is the state of mind in which an individual lacks self confidence and does not have the ability to appreciate themselves. There is a wide variety of reasons why a person goes through different stages of depression. Many people suffer from depression which leads them to have confidence with in themselves. There are many reasons for the cause of it. Women and men of all ages, races, and economic levels can have depression. It often occurs in women. Each person with this disorder has different ways of acting with the state of mind. Researchers believe that it is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, which may be hereditary or caused by different events in a person’s life. Most types of depression seem to run in families with any problems. Many illnesses have specific medical causes and have straightforward treatment, but depression is more complicated then with any other illness because you can not cure it with surgery. One of the causes of depression can occur with “social factors such as loneliness which can be a break up with a boyfriend or girlfriend or a death of a relative or friend” (Curtis). It can be any type of family history conflicts such as anyone within the family or any child abuses. An early child abuse can lead to it or it can be heredity if a family member has been through it. Money can be another issue towards depression people lose their jobs. Once they lose their job they get stressed out and at times feel depressed because they don’t have sufficient amount of money for themselves or their family to support them such as food, clothing, rent, and payments. “Depression can be a temporary response to many situations and stresses” ( Major). Being independent may be another cause because you don’t have any help from others you do everything on your own and it is up to the person whether they finish their responsibilities or not which causes then a lot of stress. “Experts believe generic traits, along with stressful events, illness, medication, or other factors, can lead to an imbalance of certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, causing depression” (Curtis). Some conditions that may trigger to depression can be “Social and peer pressures in children and teens” (Curtis). There are many causes out that can all lead to different disorders one being depression. When depression occurs to any human each individual has different ways of acting towards it Depression can be a temporary response to many different situations and stresses. “In adolescents, depressed mood is common because of the normal process of maturing and the stress associated with it” (Curtis). There can be several factors that increase your risk for depression. One of the factors is that “Several factors increase your risk for depression; your risk of developing depression is up to three times greater than that of the general population if you have a family member with depression” (Curtis). Many types of illness can occur such as chronic pain, heart problems, diabetes, or cancer. Other risk factors of depression can be “a stressful life event, such as losing a job or death of a loved one. This is especially true for older people who have many social stressors, such as becoming dependant upon others for care” (Curtis). Women tend to have additional risk factors for depression. “Recent childbirth, use of birth control pills” (Curtis) can lead to problems of depression. For some women, birth control pills can improve their mood. All of these are in common in which depression can grow larger to a human and lead a different type of illness in them. “Depression can happen in a variety of ways and for many different reasons. At times, what some people call depression is not depression at all” (McCory 11). People at times think that they are in need of drugs when in reality it is not necessary at all. If taking drugs they can become addicted which can make a bigger problem for themselves. People at times think that once depression hits them it will never get to them again but, “if you have had depression before, you are much more likely to have depression again” (Jeannette). While in depression people begin to stress out and do not know what to do with their lives. The thing to do while in depression or beginning the first steps of depression can be going and talking to a specialist and see what they can do before the risk increases. If depression is far of in it is best to go see a psychologist to get help and talk with them about any life problems. They can be a big help in talking out any childhood problems as well. In many cases there are many ways to prevent depression from getting to someone or for it to grow and become a bigger life problem. There are numerous ways that a person can try to lessen or even eliminate the negative effects of stress” (Silverstein 73). To prevent depression from getting to you because of job problem the best treatment for that can be to find a better career that it satisfying to yourself. Always trying to make something better of what has already been lost is the best way of recovering that stage. When being new to a place such as a school or job the best thing to do is make friends. “Through a hobby will probably give you more of a mood boost than going to therapy. In such cases, the depression is remedied by changing the situation” (Curtis). Medications can be another way of preventing the depression stage. But it is best not to take them at all because you may need to take them for the remainder of your life or at least for a good amount of time. If on medication it is necessary for one to take the amount that has been prescribed and not more than what it says to take. Taking it on a regularly basis is recommended; even if one itself feels that the depression is gone it is recommended to keep taking the medication. After thinking you are better and stop the medication depression can once again hit you. This all depends within your body and what the doctor has to say. “Counseling may help you through times of grief, stress, or low mood” (Major). Therapy is another good way to feel better and relax instead of taking medications. “Family therapy may be particularly important for teens who feel blue” (Major). Therapy is recommended because it relaxes one, it is helpful after one stops taking the medications that they were prescribed too. A good diet and regularly exercising can be another helpful way of preventing depression. It gets one’s mind off anything that makes them feel bad, sad or in which something is bothering them which helps there health be in good condition. Depression can mean anything to one’s mind. Depression most often is a reaction to a disturbing event, which can be a failure at school with teenagers. Many people often feel lonely and as if they are not good enough. Usually people tend to have a low -self -esteem which can cause depression. Now days there are many treatments to this illness. Depression is a state of mind and can cause many risk in one’s health. Many symptoms can also occur when one is depressed. It can just be a passing period and eventually goes away when one feels better.

The exact causes of depression seem to differ immensely, but there are some who believe that it maybe caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, or that it may even be hereditary. Still there are others who believe that it is a combination of social, biological, emotional, psychological, and economical influences that may cause someone who has no family history of depression to develop even a mild case of depression.
Major Depressive Disorder, according to Coon, is a mood disorder in which the person has suffered one or more intense episodes of depression. Major Depressive Disorder falls under mood disorders subtopic depressive disorders (Coon 2013). “Psychologist have come to realize that mood disorders (major disturbances in emotion) are among the most serious of all psychological conditions. In any given year, roughly 9.5 percent of the U.S. population suffers from a mood disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2011a)” (Coon 2013). I was one of the 9.5 percent. I have decided to write on this topic because I want to understand what causes it. I have been depressed before without medication or counseling and I wanted to know why do you get depressed and how does it impact you. Depression was once believed to affect mainly adults for various reasons. It was hardly ever seen in minors or college students. Today depression is more common in younger populations mainly college students. There are many things that can trigger depression in college students, such as the environment, anxiety, and the fear of failure.
